The real reasons are:
1) Xenoblade had a lot of normalfag fans because of how tame it was compared to other JRPGs so naturally a design like that brings them out of their comfort zone
2) It’s a nintendo exclusive, which brought it to the eyes of people that would never even acknowledge weirder JRPGs, so it was used as outrage and shitpost fuel

They've modelled more complex characters than any on that page (Pneuma, Wulfric) so I think it's most likely they just went with the one they liked best.

Some of them might've been adjusted to make modelling easier (like Morag losing the big cape), but ultimately it was the artist's decision on which design to use.

Takahashi credited the varying art styles among the rare blades as giving Monolith's modelers more experience, so some were outsourced and some were done in house.
We can't really know who did what models unless the artist mentioned it in their notes in the artbook, though. (Like CHOCO calling the person at Monolith who modeled T-elos his soulmate, which confirms that she wasn't outsourced.)

I booted the game up again because of this thread.

I seriously don't get how anyone can enjoy it, but it seems super popular on Yea Forums (for other reasons than just waifus).

I just wasted an hour getting barely anywhere in chapter 3, got a sidequest to save some furball and had to kill a bunch of lizards. The last lizard dealt more damage than my potion spawning skill could outheal so everything just rolled back to before the fight, one hour backtracked. During all of this I had zero fun. I spend 15 seconds watching my skills slowly recharge, pull the same three in sync with the sword slashes and then wait for another charge, occasionally click the special skill.

I can't do any other elemental combo than fire-water-fire because I don't have any characters that can perform combos, and the only combo I got usually get interrupted by enemies jumping away.

Am I doing something horribly wrong or is this just the game?

How are you in Chapter 3 and still not have an healer? Did you take Nia off your party? Did you not level her party heal art and break art? Are you not toppling enemies? Driver Combos spawn large health potions. Also dying in battle doesn't reset your save, you still maintain the objects and exp gain from any enemies you have killed, so you should still be stronger. Make sure your Blades have your strongest Core Chips equipped (sort them by weapon level), make sure your arts and Driver affinity charts are up to date, check your equipment, use pouch items (Narcipear Jelly from Argentum is pretty good as it recharges your arts over time) and there'll be no reason you should lose to ignas.

At the VERY least you should also be able to perform Earth-Fire-Earth with Poppi and Pyra. Remember that Driver Combos (Break-Topple-Launch-Smash) extend your alloted time for Blade Combos as well as dramatically boost their damage output, and cancelling your auto-attack's end animation (using an Art right as the auto-attack damage indicator pops up, you'll know you did it right when a circle pops at the center of the screen) drastically improves Special meter build-up (especially so on the third strike of the auto-attack).

If you don't have a second Rare Blade on Rex and Nia yet, you should be opening more cores, there's a pity system where the game will give you three rare blades guaranteed if you don't roll one in X number of cores. Equipping more Blades drastically speeds up combos as switching to a Blade starts it with all its arts charged, and you can cancel into a Blade Switch same way you can cancel into an Art.

I wouldn't call it 'super popular' here. The fanbase is fairly small, and the game's reception was pretty split between negative positive impressions, it's just got a lot of dedicated waifufags who keep making threads.

As for what you can do to make combat a bit less painful...Uraya's a real rough spot, but there are some things you can do. First, if you haven't already, had back to Argentum and pick up Narcipear Jelly and sparklesugar, and give those items to the party members you're using (which honestly, should just be Rex, Nia and Tora - vandham's kind of a deadweight). Those items will auto-charge your arts even when you aren't hitting anything. If you haven't used the pouch expansion kit you got in chapter 2 yet, give it to whoever you're controlling so they can double up on items and charge their arts even faster.
Additionally - when you aren't cancelling into an art, don't bother watching the whole auto-attack combo play out. Just get the first hit in then flick the stick to move the character the tiniest bit and reset the combo to do the first hit again, and so on -it's quite a bit faster. Always try to cancel off the third hit when you get around to using arts, though.

You should draw her ESPECIALLY if you haven't played the game.

Also, newfriends beginner's pasta:
-Screencap tutorials because there isn't a reasonable way to view them again.
-Rex automatically gets fantastic blades so you don't need to give him much Blades from the gacha (but give him 2 or 3 good Blades)
-Use Pouch Items as much as possible, especially the ones that lets you recharge your Arts faster. Makes the flow of the battle better.
-On skill trees, you will see an ability unlock "Cancel a driver art with another driver art". It's imperative that you unlock this ASAP because it boosts the flow of battle tremendously.
-Also get the 3 skills that lets you start a battle with the Art already charged on the X, Y and B buttons
-Understand the Attack Cancelling mechanic, as it makes the flow of the battle better by recharging Arts quickly
-Swapping blades refills their arts palette.
-You can combo into and out of swapping blades.
-Most enemies will aggro you if you aren't 8 levels above them. And look at your environment before taking a step in the wild, or you could get your ass raped by a Gorilla 80 levels over you. But the game don't punish you for exploring, so don't be afraid to do it.
-Don't use too much bonus XP at inns unless you really need to because it can completely trivialize the game
-Focus on the Driver Combo of Break > Topple > Launch > Smash when they will be introduced. The sooner you can understand this set up, the better
-You can raise trust between a Driver and their Blade by repeatedly using pouch items over and over again. It costs money, but later in the game money is a non-issue
-Raising trust with your Blade is needed to unlock the Blade's skill tree in most cases.
-Don't waste protocol overdrives. Especially on common blades
-DON'T kill the little Arduran in Torigoth until you feed it to Lv.99. He'll become the best Legendary Cores farming spot

If you spread those four abilities between your three drivers (with two of them being on the player controlled driver) that should give you a good chance of completing the combo, since the CPU drivers are usually smart enough to switch to the appropriate blade to continue the combo.
