you're correct, he's just holding A before the level starts. But he's autistic so he gave this action a special name. It's a half A press because in a full game run it doesn't actually require an additional A press but in a single level run it does. So he averaged the 0 and 1 to get 0.5 and that's why he calls it a half A press
