It's really not that bad and depends on how much you smoke. If you're coughing alot more than normal, you've probably been smoking for over 15 years and more than half a pack a day. Same for shortness of breath, which can be amplified by poor fitness (which is common in smokers). But if you're smoking 2 packs a day those symptoms will be MUCH worse MUCH faster. Like, chronic cough in under 6 months (with the accompanying phlegm) and shortness of break in a month and much more severe.
But I've known people that only smoke 1-2 cigarettes a day their whole life and have no symptoms at all like that. I don't really care as long as they're not doing it by me. Their business.

This is true, smoking provides other benefits like the relaxing effect from the other alkaloids, and pleasure from the rituals of use. I'm not saying there aren't smokers who feel stuck in a hole when deprived of tobacco and smoke mainly to dig themselves out, but that ain't me. I live a pretty relaxed life and don't feel dependent at all on tobacco. I imagine those people have other problems contributing to their tobacco dependency.

The few more sick days per year they have are tiny expense compared to them being on pension of years longer. Non smokers tend to die in a way that requires more treatment. Netflix got reamed too because of Hopper smoking too much. He can virtue signal and say it’s his own choice but he probably would’ve had to have this discussion with his team if they added it in.
