Year 5 was a mess, the story got more interesting at least but it's padded out with a shitload of filler and overall it's longer than years 1-4 combined, I guess the devs realized there's only two years left and as soon as the game is over the whales will stop playing so they now want the years to last as much as possible

You defeat the ice and boggart vaults in the first 3 years.
Year 4 a curse breaker and DADA teacher shows up. She kinda forces you and merula to work together, so merula ends up a lot more tolerable. She jokes and throw some banter, but generally wants to help. As side missions, you can take merula to the ball and to a date.
Year 5 that curse breaker reveals herself to be evil, crucios merula, and now she seens to be closing herself off again because of the betrayal.

at the start of year 4 Dumbledore hires a curse breaker named Patricia Rakepick to investigate the vaults, she becomes Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in year 5 and gets you, Merula, and Bill to work together with her to investigate the next vault curse that has trapped Penny's little sister inside a painting.
Over the course of year 5 you get closer to Merula, you start bonding with her and she even begins to call you a friend, there are a ball and a first date side quests where you get to take her out but that doesn't really affects the story. Right at the end of year 5 when you enter the vault with Merula and Bill Rakepick reveals herself to be the bad guy and tortures Merula, who regresses back to her year 1 personality, says she was wrong to associate herself with you and your friends and literally just tells you to fuck off.
Year 6 starts with Merula trying to get you to join her on her quest for revenge against Rakepick, but you have no option to say yes and she once again tells you to fuck off and that she doesn't need you

We find out that her parents were takenwhen she was 10 1/2 years old, 6-18 months before she went to Hogwarts, depending on whether she was enrolled at 11 or 12 years of age. Her fondest memory is her 10th birthday where her parents bought her a broom and took turns flying her around the place. She is capable of conjuring an incorporeal patronus, and worries that she might be doomed to repeat the mistakes of her parents. Flash forward to the breaking of the most recent cursed vault, she ends up betrayed by the person she idolized and it leaves her bitter, relapsing to her attitude back in the first year and no longer caring if she ends up like her parents as long as she avenges herself on the person that so wronged her.

There better be a satisfying ending to all this. I will not be satisfied until the devs include an ending where I'm married to Merula and her belly's carrying my child.
