The characters were one of the worst parts though, with most of the actually likeable ones being the second gen units.
Fuck, now that I've thought about that a sequel that revolves around the kids would be pretty cool. Severa and Inigo actually got some decent character development in Fates, it'd be nice to see the others get the same treatment.

Well okay. I'm a big trpg fan and awakening basically does everything I like about the genre completely wrong. The basic gameplay mechanics are incredibly rng-heavy (even normal FE is reliable in comparison, in FEA you're gambling with dual attacks and skill procs and stuff), the game really strongly encourages you to field a couple super strong units rather than a full party, the level design is very boring and many maps play out the exact same way without any need to change up tactics, the story is weak, the classes and skills are poorly balanced, etc.

Exactly, if I had just looked at pictures and read doujins I'd love the characters but most of them really annoyed me in FEA. Even the better ones were merely tolerable in-game yet are much more endearing in crossovers, e.g. lucina in pxz2, codename steam, smash, probably #fe and the musou as well from what I hear.
