Why is this game loved so fucking much? People always mention the combat being so amazing, it looks basic as fuck to me, especially compared to Japanese games like DMC 5 and Ninja Gaiden. What makes this game's combat sooooooooooo good then? Because you get to stare at some asian girl's flat ass?

oh god no

Oni fuckin sucks ass

Who owns the ONI ip? Does bungie own it?

you have shit taste go back to fortnite

Explain how it's good. And no, "I get to stare at a flat asian butt" isn't a reason.

I remember playing it for a bit and then forgetting about it.

Based as fuck game. I pity the zoomers who can't enjoy it.

Niche and forgotten anime game good
Popular japanese franchise bad

Because it's combined seamlessly with the gunplay, which is cool. Ranged weapons in action games are usually either underpowered combo fodder or super OP, whereas Oni actually makes the difference a meaningful choice.

Also it has actual level design unlike most action games.

>konoko is an android
eceleb moron in charge of not being an idiot

Still seething aye shillman?

but guns aren't just combo fodder in dmc, and dmc controls better and has way more combos

how come this game has no black women?

no take 2 does, they also own the myth IP. Bungie only owns the Pathways and Marathon, also destiny

Play it yourself and find out.

Shit, that sucks. Maybe they might buy it back since T2 is just sitting on it - also they have a new game called 'Matter' that might be a spiritual successors to their old games maybe
Without a publisher it would be nice to see some sections of Bungie doing experimental stuff via Steam

God, you're a mindless faggot. I can tell that because you're comparing it to games that came out after it, and zoomers can only appreciate something if it never really went anywhere. People like it because it looked and played like a cool 90's anime series. And I know every coked out zoomer cant tell the difference between slow and boring but not every game should play like free x night at the discoteca.

sequel wen

Please do not play the PS2 version the combat is designed around mouse controls.

The game has lower system requirements than the website you are reading this post on, just play it on your computer.

Played this when it first came out. It was trash. I myself dont understand the praise years later or if its just some elaborate ruse. Granted it had some great ideas but they were implemented really badly.

It came free with literally every PS2 FAT.

Fuckin' zoomer.

nostalgia and it had a marketing campaign way back when
people are just brainwashed

Reported for advertising.
Fuck off

It's weird to see comparisons to DMC or Ninja Gaiden. I know it's a tired comparison but if anything it plays more like Dark Souls, to the point where your strongest tactic is to roll through attacks and backstab enemies (or backbreaker is Oni's case)

Oh, I have. I just got it on PS2 so I could have a physical copy.

Idk you could actually try playing the game and find out before shitposting about it.

This reminds me of Egoraptor talking shit about the graphics in Ocarina of Time. Oni came out in early 2001, before you were born, and it brought something that other games couldn't or didn't do at that time.

A big part of Oni's appeal is that combat is designed around freelook and not lock-on, so switching between melee shooting and traversing the environment feels seamless.

>People always mention the combat being so amazing, it looks basic as fuck to me, especially compared to Japanese games like DMC 5 and Ninja Gaiden. What makes this game's combat sooooooooooo good then?
Oni actually came out in the same year but before the first Devil May Cry, but when I first played it recently I was surprised at how big the movelist is with directional and crouch modifiers and they managed to incorporate concepts from 2D fighting games like high/low block and throws.
Oni is much less combo/juggle focused than DMC/NG/Bayo but you still have a lot of moves to work and there are a lot of tough but enjoyable fights.
Also, it's the only "beat em up" that merges third person shooting with melee combat, but the genre went with lock-on/soft lock systems because of DMC1 (plus most action games started on console) and Oni really needs to be played mouse and keyboard.

Attached: Oni combat.webm (960x540, 2.88M)

It was fun and simple with bosses that were a bit of a challange but doable and you got to play as Not-Motoko

>Oni is much less combo/juggle focused than DMC/NG/Bayo
That alone makes it better. Juggling doesn't stay fun for long. Enemies having bloated hp values just so you can juggle them is retarded.

I haven't played Oni since like the release year but looking at that webm and the video OP posted it seems like a pretty good 3d combat system that could've used some tweaks like a better block and some ways to break out of moves like the tombstone one. It seems like the combat fits very well in a not-GITS game like that.

>Also, it's the only "beat em up" that merges third person shooting with melee combat
Well not the only one but certainly one of the few. It's surprising there haven't been more games like that.

Game sucks major ass but I have the ps2 version

>Also it has actual level design unlike most action games.
Underrated. What other action games has levels like Oni's?

I could never get this fucking game to work. Honestly surprised more games don't use anime for cutscenes.

You can juggle in NG, but... it's not optimal.

No one days it's a GOAT game, review sites slammed it for a reason. It's just a fun game though with some appealing art design. Not every game we like has to be a 10/10 hallmark of the industry. Oni and James Bond: Everything or Nothing are just fun little games you can enjoy on the weekend.

redpill me

gameplay like this has to be streamlined these days e.g. Batman, and that Aragorn game

I remember playing this when i was younger and for some reason, i enjoyed the fuck out of it, Nothing stands out above anything that it has to offer, everything just feels "good"

It now has a HD mod

I maybe will download it and see if it "holds up"

How the fuck do I do the special moves in this game that isn't the rising punch and spinning kick?

just practice your timings
it takes some time, but you can get more consistent at them, the back > forward kick or left/right > forward kick generally requires forward and kick at the same time
but I'd said the let go of crouch > punch/kick and crouching moves are more important to know

Attached: 1532245679302.gif (150x150, 230K)

Is there some sort of delay between the inputs or what? I can't never figure it out

Is the Oni parts on this site not working, It's were the forum was which had mods and multiplayer
bungie.org/

oni.bungie.org/forum/index.php
This one?

Yeah, I'm getting a 404

It also had Amanda Winn Lee as the VA... Y'know back when she was good and not such a far-left nut case.

for

>active message board for a 18 year old game
comfy feeling

hes a bit dull, has some good content here and there but not really anything special, but he didnt like the hentai doom mod so Yea Forums despises him, From what i remember.

The motoko kusanagi mod is pretty fun

>Be kid
>Be suck ass at action game
>Still try my hardest to beat Oni due to my undying will to see Konoko in torned clothes

*sip* Those was a different time

It ain't that. He's just a shill. Same as all the other jewtube faggots except DSP and LTG because they're so fucking out there that any time they get a deal to advertise something the company gets trolled into bankruptcy.

Oni had the best combat with the best perfect mix of moves and weapons. I can't remember how many hours I spent playing it. Used to roam the map picking up 10+ enemies and fighting them all at once.

The ninja AI also blew me a way at the time.

When you three-shot the final boss with two pinpoint shots from that fragmentation weapon, and then a small kick for that remaining 1% health

He must have dozed off during the story. They spell out what she is pretty clearly.

Attached: 1548422167862.jpg (640x539, 194K)

Do i have to torrent it or it's freeware like with marathon

But is that streamlining a good thing? The batman arkham games they released some years ago always seemed so boring to me but that webm actually makes the game look quite interesting.

We are with the TCTF and we're here with orders to cease and desist all operations! We have reason to believe that this facility is involved in the manufacture of illegal technology.

The combat is clunky but also fluid and fun as fuck.
The guns are satisfying to use, and when enemies have some of them they are fucking terrifying (screamer cannons, lightning gun things).
The game itself is the perfect amount of challenge without feeling outright bullshit.
And lengthwise its not too short, but doesn't overstay its welcome.

And the cheat codes are god tier, especially the one that lets you switch to any other character model in the game, including that model's combat moveset.

it sucks dick and isn't fun. anyone who tells you otherwise is a room temp IQ moron who probably also enjoys playing shitty eurojank like stalker

Can see it as shifted priorities I guess. With Batman it's not about winning the fight, it's about getting as many performance points as possible

Gamers are lazy and don't want to learn a system of moves that aren't "tap buttons in the general direction of enemies" and maybe "dedicated counterattack button"

It's a good thing for sales, but that's only because most players are casuals who want to see cool stuff happen on screen and feel like they're the cause of it. They don't want to actually have to be skilled for what they're doing to look impressive, they'd much rather an AI handle all the targeting and timing while they just press the button to tell it what to do next, and their character just glides over to the enemy the game deems appropriate to execute that move on.

>it looks basic as fuck to me
>looks
So you made this garbage fuckin thread without actually having touched the game. Catastrophic.

>On that rooftop level with the ninjas
>Fight each one exhaustingly because fucking ninjas
>Try a shortcut by kicking one off the rooftop
>As I make my jump kick he shifts to the side
>Fall to my death
>Troll face

Never felt so humiliated by an AI before

Largely inoffensive, but that changed when he 1) left basically a 5/10 review for FO76 in which he basically accused people of having an agenda for hating on the game and 2) really started phoning it in with a couple more recent reviews. Blood: Fresh Supply didn't launch in a good enough state to merit an uncritical review over mechanics that didn't work as they did in the original, and he came off like a whiny bitch who savescummed his way to getting his review out first for Sigil.
With the Oni review, I can't honestly tell if his complaints about the combat come from him being shit at 3D brawler combat or not, because his complaints about how blocking works and how "at least Mortal Kombat has a block button" has me thinking he's never touched Tekken in his life. Or that he couldn't be fucked to spend 15 minutes on google before penning his script.
TL:DR meh/10 used to be ok, now just a lazy shill doing the "Youtuber who broke 200K subs thing"

I want a fucking sequel to this so bad

It would just be a bastardized fragment of the original, barely recognizable.
Lets be real here.

That does look neat, but I hate it when enemies no sell your attacks.

>when enemies no sell your attacks

Super armor.

he got cucked by Civvie

God The Big guy model of the Black Ops was fucking BULLSHIT

Take a look at what DMC did to beat em ups. People obsess over rank now which means you gotta keep your score as high as possible. The "fun" of the game changes priorities depending on how the combat develops. The goal of Oni's fun would probably change dramatically with streamlining and the playerbase would probably split with some preferring how it originally was vs the new game's.

People really need to stop defining entire genres based on one game. There's plenty of space for variety there but it's not used at all. Things actually were better back in the day when developers were more experimental with their games.

This is why I'm hoping alien contact happens(and is admitted to) soon, because the aliens probably have some really cool video games and it'd be nice to see what whole new genres they've figured out that we haven't.

>People always mention the combat being so amazing, it looks basic as fuck to me
>it looks

Are you implying that you haven't played it?

What makes the combat good is that the framestats and hitboxes of the moves are generally well worked on, almost legit 1v1 fighting-game-tier and you are often fighting two or three enemies at once with free-moving no lock-on system, with enemies that wanted to kill you and weapons involved.
You don't like it because it had no auto-awesome buttons. It was great and you are a retard.

This guy was good a few years ago, but somewhere along the lines he must've discovered Yea Forums and started pandering to it with his shit humor.
Compare this video from 4 years ago, where he calmly reviews the game and explains the game mechanics

youtube.com/watch?v=FYikmR449Rg

To his artificial over the top personality that he has nowadays

>SHIEEET XD
>SHWACKED
>some annoying cut-offs to an ingame cutscene where a character responds to what the guy have just said like they're having some autistic conversation
>I FUCKED YOU'RE MOM XD

And Yea Forums memes he fequently uses. It feels so disingenuous and fake.

A lot of games of that timeframe had ranking system from what I can remember. Godhand, Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, God of War, DMC, etc so it might have just been the natural progression for the genre.I definitely agree with you though that a game developer should do whatever they feel like as long the end result is a good game.

you had to be there

Yeah I personally don't give a crap about some score in a game like this. Oni is a lot more fun in that sense because the combat is great and the only effective metric is if I made it through or not.

IMO scoring works in games like Hitman where you can approach the mission in a variety of ways and also in games that are entirely about the score like when you're just trying to get a high score in an arcade game.

Baby's first stand alone complex.
Bungie has never done an original game or concept in their entire existence. All they do is steal very safe popular ideas and make the most milquetoast game imaginable within copyright limitations. Their games are un-selfaware parodies and the people that have fond memories of them are of the same mental capacity.
If Bungie was a Chinese company everyone would be shitting on them for what they really are.

Devil spin kick!

Ocarina of Time graphics were inexcusably shit when the game came out late in the year of '98. Nintendo has never done a first-party game with relevant graphics. They're the highest tier of cheap-asses there is, which is a compliment or insult depending on your point of view. Their games always have some one-trick pony to distract you from the dated technology.
The first thing that comes into Nintendo's mind is "how can this product avoid being pirated", and they'll spend more money on that rather than the actual technology in the product.

>because his complaints about how blocking works and how "at least Mortal Kombat has a block button" has me thinking he's never touched Tekken in his life.
Only niggers and chinamen play this weeb trash.

>Why is this game loved so fucking much?
Because weebs. This game was trash. Even melee combat sucked ass.
>it takes ages to kill anyone
>enemies variety sucked ass
>zero fluidity, no smooth transition from one move/combo to another

Proof the west is the best at anime

Came in here to once again tell everyone that Oni was still my first vidya fap.

>e-celeb makes a video on a totally forgettable 5/10 at best game
>suddenly, Yea Forums decides they want to talk about it

Every time

Wait what? There's a version besides the PS2 version??

The neckbreak and backbreak are amongst the most awesome things you can do in a video game.
