Oh no

Really, listening to fans can lead to absolute shit. Make your own work, fans don't know what they want.

Why would you ever listen to the fans

They don't fucking know anything about how to create a game, they just are autistic about your fucking waifu relationships. Fans are worthless and will get you nowhere

If you listen to the fans you have music like fucking Taylor Swift and shit. If you don't you have music like Radiohead

>twitter cap thread
eat shit faggot

Sure why not. Just make games for the screeching harpies and special interest groups that don't care about them and only use them as vehicles and will never spend a dime on them and then blame gamers for not playing them.

Movie industry is already doing it with NuGhostbusters and a slew of other shitty Reboots, remakes new entries and live action entries that nobody asked for or wanted but serves someones special interest so here they are and you are a shitty person for not caring about them for some reason.

>food analogy

For a first game, it's probably a good idea to avoid listening to fans -too- much.
For sequels however, proper and thorough fan input can provide important insight into the game and mechanics and how it was received across various demographics, allowing for possible adjustments that can take a series to high places. Some take it way too far, though.

>Its OUR game! If you don't like the way we do things, just don't buy it!
>What the fuck, w-why aren't they buying it?!?

Attached: battlefield-v-740x555.jpg (740x555, 55K)

They're right. Don't listen to the media either.

how about they(and everyone else) stop listening to journos instead

you're retarded

You only should listen to feedback about problems in your game but you shouldn't follow fans solutions.

On the one hand, ME3's writing is shit so it's easily the worst in the series.
On the other hand, the gameplay was the best and people who think ME1 wasn't clunky broken garbage are fucking retarded and honestly deserved Andromeda.

This only makes sense if they're passionate developers like Platinum who pursue what they desire to make and everyone is on board with them doing what they want and having to deal with it. What this usually actually means though is that they stop listening to fans and then start listening to ideological media astroturfers that tell them that they must put more of (X) into their games or else their company will suffer for it.

This basically. We are taking our ball and going home mentality doesn't work for a fucking business.

This is exactly why people should "make OUR game". Because it lets the consumers know the true colors of the companies/people creating them and lets us avoid them.
The example you posted is, ironically, the approach devs should take to making games (not, obviously, the approach they should take to PR and the content to include in said games).

>What this usually actually means though is that they stop listening to fans and then start listening to ideological media astroturfers that tell them that they must put more of (X) into their games or else their company will suffer for it.
What it boils down to.

Stop listening to fans and listen to us and burn you games to the ground in our ideological war.

Sound advice. We're whiny as fuck.

The problem with "listening to the fans" is that they can listen to anyone claiming to be a fan regardless of whether they know best for the game and are genuine fans or are just demanding changes under the guise of one. They're mostly not going to put in the time to be able to tell which is which or follow the right advice and it can cause doubt where there needn't be to begin with. Nioh is one of the best relatively recent examples of this and their approach with the sequel so far equally concerns me.

>"Look, I shit my pants and I'm saying retarded things, clicik my link, pay attention to meeeeee!"

Game journos remind me of reality tv shows that were designed to be hated from the start so people would hate watch them.

The problem is that the advice that follows is "Listen to and follow more socially aware sources of advice and critique".

They SHOULD be listening to focus groups and testers. Of course they should ignore random internet based 'fans'. And journos. And investors.

Most of the truly based game devs don't let fans or the media interfere with their vision. It's good to get feedback on technical aspects such as control and balance, but the core themes, gameplay style and aesthetics of a video game should be dictated by the creative team. Many games (looking particularly at the recent trend of "early access" titles) have been ruined due to their developers being unable to say no to their fans. An extensively focus-tested and board-driven product will probably sell well, but it's unlikely to be a great and memorable game.

All criticisms towards ME3 was AFTER the game was released, so if this is suppose to be anti-reception, then I am VERY confused.

You haven't seen the stories about Half Life 2 and Dishonored have you? To be honest it feels like the average videogame player has somehow gotten even worse now.

>This article comes out after SNK had an interview where they said "We added the sexy characters because the fans wanted them."
HMMMMMMM
HOW SUSPICIOUS

Got some cake in your eyes, fatty?

Well that's SNK, a shitty product made for shitty people

Fans can be autistic cancer that kills a game but we all know what this really mean

>don’t listen to your core audience a small group of loud white faggots demand a black gay man be added you fucking Nazi KKK how else can be prove orange man bad! No I don’t know what the fuck a lore is and I don’t care that it’s broken just make a new one. No I don’t know what game your making.

neck yourself tranny

You should listen to your fans, but take it with a grain of salt. Feedback is very good, but not all fan ideas are good.

Yes, let's listen to people who don't buy our games instead.

I like the Kamiya method of focus testing, where he calls testers who fail at his challenges shitters and lets them know their free to fuck off.

>stop listening to the people who pay your bills

Reminds me of that South Park episode where Cartman gets an Amusement park and doesn't let anyone else in.

All journalists must hang, prove me wrong, I'll wait.

>why aren’t they buying our game?
>well I guess this proves there’s no more interest in (famous franchise) or (genre/sub-genre)
>(famous franchise) or even entire genre/sub-genre dies because of arrogant devs with their head simultaneously up their ass and buried in the sand

>Luigi's Mansion 3 isn't mission based because they listened to the fans
get rekt fags lmao

Ssssssshh, shut up bigot.

>listening to focus groups and testers

Can they stop listening to SJWs as well? Because I'd be down for that.

The ones living in 3rd world shitholes actually trying to make a difference don't deserve to die, just the 1st worlders having tantrums over twitter posts.

Depends how many hipster devs they got hired from San Fran. Odds are they are cucks with wives, and they give something like Community Manager spots for those same ultra-feminist wives who then stard demanding stupid shit on hwo the game should be changed.

It was very kind of valve to let special needs kids have access to their game early but they really shouldn't have taken everything they said to heart.

They will buy it you faggit. Yea Forums lost, we won.

>advertising for clickbaiters
Fuck off shill.

Ironically 3rd world journalists probably agree with this sentiment.

sure, stop listening to fans and start listening to sjws and social media influenzas

Better yet

Listen to Fans
Stop listening to people who dont even buy your games

They shouldn't listen to publishers either.
That's why we are getting so many games packed full of dlc and microtransactions. Also why most games are finished when they launch.

how dare you try and taint Samara with your filth

Listen to fans and you get the same bullshit Pillars of Eternity problem.

Don't listen to fans and you get more "surprise mechanics".

I guess I'm sticking with indie games.

this isn't completely wrong, sometimes listening to the fans isn't a good idea. The majority isn't always right, and sometimes the creators truly know what's best

Can we all at least agree that you DEFINITELY should not listen to people who do not buy your games?

whats the problem with pillars of eternity? i have like 300h played if i combine them and i had a blast

>Making it a completely black and white situation.

Some fans have good suggestions ("hey this mechanic is kinda wonky and could use some refining"), and some fans have fucking awful suggestions. ("please make the next game open world and add dating mechanics")

That depends. If your game is one that needs a thriving community to keep going, it's best to know what will bring more people in whether it's through listening to fan feedback or making your game more appealing to broader audiences.

This is how Mao and Stalin operated with regards to critiscsm, FYI.

>BFV
Nah, they called it a failure because it sold 7m copies instead of 12.

And that's a good thing! Really though the "fans" are subreddits and neogaf/resetera so it is actually good.

Do not listen to potential customers?

Not the game itself, but the whole Kickstarter fiasco with the submitted joke on the gravestone.

If the potential customers problem with your games is that they don't like anything about them and want you to make something completely different in a different market, then yeah they're maybe not worth listening to.

>because listening to us journalists is a better idea

Attached: 1510442896022.png (515x821, 59K)

...

These people arent journalists, journalists are bound by a code of ethics. Why should journalists hang because of a bunch of angrt bloggers

ive recently been in said focus test/feedback tests and while i know for a fact its not the kind of game i would ever be interested in, i always try to make my feedback sound less like bitching and more like "listen im not a casual but im also not great at this. heres the direction it should go for those who are into this game, but heres the direction casual normies would like better"

i want to at the very least make it clear that when youre making content in games it should cater to everyone, but should focus more on the people who actually buy AND play the goddamn game instead of the people who bitch and moan about it

Attached: 1562870222525.jpg (960x960, 161K)

Let them do whatever they want, if they feel like digging their own grave and make an example of themselves of mistakes companies should never do, so be it.

Good game developers deliver an experience and then fix bugs. That’s it. There isn’t this prolonged bargaining process or communique between the “fans” and team. The only reason why developers ever needs to “listen to the fans” is because their fundamental experience is so weak so have to satisfy some impression of improvement. These are games that, of course, should never have been bought in the first place.

>implying they give a fuck at all about your nerdists opinions about how the direction the medium should go in
All they wanted to know was if you were able to make it the end of level without any problems and if you were frustrated at any point or encountered any bugs. They couldn't give less of a fuck about consumer enthusiasts.

>listening to the people who want to pay you money for a product is a bad idea
okay look, clearly they don't have to do everything that everyone else says, but they should show that they're actively listening and at least taking popular feedback.
at the end of the day what you're trying to do is deliver a product that people will buy. you have to know your market

and while i know thats what i filled out (and it was a lot), my issue is more that i never had any issues, so i wanted more challenge. but at the same time i know more challenge means more casual fucks being butthurt

They're not wrong.

Cope tranny

I don't know if you have some sort of NDA, but if the game you tested was a major western AAA, then I can assure you that they won't do anything to piss off casuals, because they don't care about people who really get into games.

This is good. Now they will stop listening to trannies crying about female characters not wearing burkas

it was not AAA so they actually give a shit

They'll never stop listening to trannies. Obsidian drove their studio into the ground and practically declared bankruptcy and they still haven't stopped listening to the trannies.

Competent game designers should never listen to their fans, but this article misses the mark and does so using a bad example at that. Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda were absolute trash fires and the designers/writers/developers are clearly untalented and completely out of touch with what constitutes good game design, on top of being loomed over by papa EA that only cares about profit margins.

No, game developers should'nt listen to fans ever because the overarching majority of people are actually stupid as fuck, only have a passing interest in the game, have NO idea what constitutes good game design or systems and have no desire to think from outside of their own personal perspective. Listening to community feedback is the absolute worst thing you can do for a videogame. It's the reason why OSRS and POE are reddit: the game and it's the reason why retail WoW is almost unanimously considered to have gone to complete shit in wrath and arguably in TBC.

>make game people like
>it makes enough money that suits start offering ideas for the sequels to justify their useless jobs
>sequel announced, its bloated and full of design-by-committee bullshit and clearly lost what made the original special
>people shit on it
>game journos "Game Developers, its time to stop listening to the fans"
>sequel comes out
>93 metacritic score
>sells well
>everyone realizes as they're playing that it's shit
>third game announced
>no one cares
>third game comes out
>89 metacritic score
>series gets canned, people lament the wasted potential
>a couple of years pass
>all those same game journalists during some retrospective clickbait thing: "that series really fell off after the first one"
>a few more years pass
>at some trade show
>reboot announced for game series
>dev comes out and says "we're finally going back to what made game good in the first place"

The only reason why DMC5 exists is because they listened to fans.

They listen to us anyway?

No journalist is bound by a code of ethics they are just agents of propaganda machines spewing what they're told. You are living in a fantasy of idealism.

If you read between the lines the headline is really saying

Game developers, it's time to stop listening to the fans and listen to us.

LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL! ::dies::

more like cake for brains, like all mutts

I don't get why people respond to these threads.

>tfw apl of my favorite series are dead or dying because they tried to appeal to a mass market and it either flopped or worked way too well

Don't listen to fans or game journos: They're both human feces.

Don't worry bro, I understand you said it as a joke.

There are some cool journos who risk their lives to report on crime, in conflict zones or journos who report on more mundane things like technology or food but do an ok job of it. Those journalists are pretty cool.

But yes, game journos deserve to hang. Hanging is honestly too good for them. Rarely has this world suffered the existence of such a subhuman mixture of mewling political mouthpiece and self-important delusion.

>that puffy

>It's time to stop listening to social media, period
Fixed.

listening to the fans is not even easy since the ones who write shit on the internet are a tiny part
sales speak much more

Fuck, I have that dildo.

>businesses
>its time to stop making products to make your customers happy and make them repeat customers
What the fuck is wrong with the gaming industry?

Dude, Yea Forums is the board for porn

Human attention is simplistic.

I tried that once and ended up with bloody stool.

MGS2 and MGS3 weren't made by listening to the fans yet were very successful games fans loved
listening to the fans can only bring more of the same

>comparing the aryan goddess to some middle life crisis emo autists

you should never stop listening to your fans, take their advice with a grain of salt but their criticisms should be weighed on if the community largely agrees

> potential customers?
He literally said people who do not buy your games. read better nigger.

holy shit you are fucking stupid.
