Is universally praised so Yea Forums hates it

MGS 3 is universally praised too and that game is actually excellent. The best in the series.
MGS 4, on the other hand, is the point of no return for the series. It's the moment the series became total garbage. It raped the franchise and it was never able to recover. Fuck MGS 4 and fuck all its apologists.
4 was the last real MGS game, it was a step back from 3 but it's still worth playing if you're a fan, and it's a solid send off for the series with tons of fanfare.
MGS4 is unarguably the worst canon game in the series.
>Only played 3, thought it was pretty good, have zero interest in the rest of the series because most of it looks like garbage
How did I do Yea Forums?
That's a false strawman fallacy.
The Yea Forums used to LOVE the game when it came out. All the "bitching" about it was merely loving joking.
Then the nu-fags came in, saw all the memes, and thought them to be serious takes, and twisted it all into the mess it is now.
that's not MGS2.
>Thinking MGS2 is worse than MGS4, and MGSV
get out
fpbp as always.
I think MGS4 is the best of the series if you skip the cutscenes. Come at me.
Yea Forums has changed
>gives Johnny Sasaki a major role
Yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with being five seconds of gameplay between each 30 minute cutscene.
You're right, it IS worse.
I feel genuinely sorry for any newbie who has to suffer through the horrors of MGS2 this day and age. Even fucking MGS1 is more enjoyable to play.
I'd honestly recommend just watching an LP or the Digital Graphic Novel instead.
I played this game very recently. I absolutely loved it while I played it, from beginning to end, but as the high wore off, and as I went through it a 2nd time to unlock stuff, I began to realize how little game there is to the game. I would describe it more as a theme park ride than a game, a long series of cool setpieces that are over as soon as they start. Honestly I feel like I was cheated out of an actual game. But I think it's worth experiencing it as a fan because it's like a big celebration of the series up to that point, and holy shit what a celebration. IMO Outer Haven should have been at least as big as the tanker from MGS2 and taken up about half the game. God damn, it was literally one room to sneak through and that's it.
Also is it me or the enemy guards' AI is way dumber than in the PS2 games?
MGO for this was based as fuck, soul compared to MGS5 online' soulless
Final level if you skip
Tanker - Pyscho mantis - button mash - Final boss
Good job guys
remember that you can still play MGO1 and 2 via modded consoles / emulators, today.
>Cucks Snake
it was bullshit I tell you
You're boring. mgs1 and 2 and even 5 is different than any other games out there. It's FUN.
>played one game in the series, liked it, therefore the others must be bad
I will never understand this logic yet it seems to be prevalent among many.
That's one of my favorite movies
MGS 4 has no gameplay worth a shit from Act 2 onwards. The only game you're playing is "Skip the cutscene" simulator.
4 was still a real MGS game but it felt like a total fuck you from Kojima, starting with the old man Snake reveal to Ocelot's "I WAS ONLY PRETENDING TO BE LIQUID HAHA" bullshit. RAY vs. REX fight was still awesome, though. MGSV was so bad, I don't wanna talk about it but Kojima has disappeared so far up his own ass now that I believe Fukushima was the true mastermind behind MGS because he left after 3.
>The Yea Forums used to LOVE the game when it came out
Absolute revisionism. Our days in the months after MGS 4 came out were us shitting on the game's horrible story.
Act 3 is the only one that felt weak. The rest is great. The little gameplay that was in MGS4 is still more satisfying than the entirety of the empty casual sandbox in V. I still find myself going back to it more than V.
I started trying to play 4 recently after finishing the other 3
Why is this a brown and bloom middle east military shooter?
I got to the part where you first fight Liquid's goons with Meryl and I kept dying because this isn't what the game is supposed to be. Forced combat has always been the worst part of every MGS game so far.
I also forgot to save when I was there so now I'm back before getting the Snatcher Metal Gear
It's such a shame, mechanics like the octo camo and metal gear seem like fun, but the rest of the game so far has been so ass that I can't bring myself to play it.
Without spoiling much, how much worse does it get?
MGS4 has a hundred times more gameplay than any of the later "Sony exclusive" mold titles.
Only revisionist here is (You).
it had a few good memorable moments for all its flaws
more than many games
If you skip the cutscenes (literally like 60% of the game) then what your left with is
>Two genuine sneaking chapters (1 & 4)
>One half of a sneaking chapter with 2 where afterwards you're quickly thrust into a boss fight, a footprint following section, then an on-rails shooter
>Chapter 3 being a pseudo-escort mission and an on-rails shooter
>Then chapter 5 with like one room of enemies to sneak past before a boss fight, a mashing mini-game, and another boss fight
>and I kept dying because this isn't what the game is supposed to be.
No, you're really fucking bad at video games. The OTS aiming system made this game pathetically easy compared to earlier entries.
Hey, at least it's better than MGSV.
Gameplay wise it gets much worse then straight up non-existent. The boss battles are ok
Story wise, you haven't even begun to see how terrible it truly is
t. newfag
>>Two genuine sneaking chapters (1 & 4)
Hol up. 4 is even completed by just throwing chaff grenades around. It doesn't have that much sneaking in it. It's honestly a glorified walking simulator that just prompts you with "REMEMBER THIS!?". If you go check how much stealth gameplay there is in that level, you'll see it's like 5 areas at most.
Fuck MGS 4.
It's literally all gimmick sections. There is not a single moment of just sneaking in peace and toying with guards at your own leisure, the closest thing is act 2 but there's still gunfights all over the place depending on what you do. Literally play it for the story and the boss fights, they're damn good.
>Playing MGS 4 for the story when the story shits all over the franchise, is full of god awful retcons and basically shits all over even itself with the ending
It's horrible, my dude
Act 1, 2, and 4, were fucking great. Condensed linear gameplay that's more fun than an empty sandbox littered with outposts.
I didn't comment on the story, but it's a story that an MGS fan has to see.
>linear gameplay that's more fun
try again bucko
MGS4 did so much shit wrong but at the very least it delivered one of the most kino final boss fights in vidya history
It's not my fault you have shit taste. I'd rather take a bad MGS game than a third person Call of Duty game trying to be an MGS game.
V hates. Is what he does.
My only gripe with the story was how they actually explained the Patriots in plain english and made them seem so mundane. I was expecting mindfuckery to top MGS2
They were also completely BTFO by Revolver Ocelot pretending to be retarded. MGS 4 is so fucking stupid, even by MG standards.
What made me the most mad was how they took the absolute mindfuck of a stinger at the very end of MGS2 "The Patriots all died 100 years ago!" and were like "haha that info we found was probably wrong".
Wait Campbell is Meryl's father? When did that happen?
>Played MGS 1 before
>Parts of it were kinda silly, but I enjoyed it
>Play MGS 3 a few years later, enjoying it
>Lose all ability to take things seriously when Ocelot starts meowing
MGS1/3 were such kino, also the first half of MGS2
Why the fuck did it have to go so far up it's own ass with fantasy conspiracy shit, if kojima would've just kept it more grounded it would've been so much better
He confides it in Snake in the ending where she dies, in MGS1.
he fugged her mother, he kept it a secret
Hm I didn't know that. Maybe because I always fail the torture sequence.
1 = 3 > 2 > 4 > everything else
>goofy trade happens
>there's a fucking sweet but tastefully short canned animation of both blows connecting simultaneously and each fighter staggering
>reset to neutral
Real fighting games aren't even having ideas this good.
Was low key gutted to see Meryl didn't love Snake anymore.
>that's not MGS2.
true. MGS4 was a fucking mess because they had to wrap up all the shit MGS2 put on the table. Hell, MGS3 suffered in order to fix the unresolved elements of MGS2
>nobody has mentioned the codec
Literally two contacts to call, and rosemary's got nothing interesting to say. Man, I could spend hours in mgs3 just doing shit and calling paramedic about it.
I think not having drebin be your weapons consultant was pure laziness.
I love it
Playing MGS2's endgame back in its time, when the net had proliferated but game consoles weren't perpetually tethered, was an uncanny, nigh ghostly experience that can never be replicated. I feel bad for the people who could only play it later and see it as this "le random nonsense" plot.
I played MGS2 shortly after it came out (2003ish) and it was random nonsense at that time
There's always the cynics.
So did Solid Snake die in the end?
ive always heard 2 was the worst cause
>muh snake
>muh raiden
oh well, i enjoy mgs 5
He died sometime between MGS4 and MGR
Wasn't Rosemary not real the whole time? Or just an actress because raiden's entire life was fake or something? That's what I got from the plot of 2 but then comes 4 and she's all real and shit
Am I a brainlet?
That's always a dumb argument because there's literally no difference between playing Snake or Raiden.
MGS2 is a fun game, it's MGS1 but improved in many fun ways and there's lots of fun things to see and do.
She was an actress who fell in love with raiden and then they got together. She was lying but with raiden telling her his past and her lies reveal they start over for real
She's real but Raiden never talked to her during MGS 2. That was the Patriots fucking around.
But yeah, I liked the idea of her not actually existing better too. MGS 4 ruined that, though, like a million other things.
One of the best games of all time. Sneaking through streets tailing a guy, Fights in metal gears, crawls through body melting hallways and brotherly fist fights to the death that spans through the ages of metal gear. I never buy remakes but if they did one is be fucking pre ordering.
Is there any ingame info what happens to Raiden between MGS2 and MGS4?
Bad. Play 1 but don't play Twin Snakes. Try 2 and 5 as well.
Sorry guys, I like MGS4 more than 3. youtube.com
mgo2 is the best
>it has more cinematics and cutscenes than gameplay
Kojima, you failed as a movie director and your game is shit
MGS: Great gameplay that is used for world building, unique bosses with best soundtrack in the franchise, very atmospheric, amazing cast.
MGS2: Continues in the tradition and combines the plot of 1 and itself into a timeless piece, uses gameplay to tell a story that is impossible to express in any other medium, solid rock 60FPS with perfectly crafted levels for its systems, impressive technology. Playing it back in the day was truly a treat, some people don't get the plot though.
MGS3: While this game had only 22FPS at the release and the camera had to be fixed in the rerelease to make the game truly great, it still has all the typical MGS qualities, the boss fights are just outstanding and the amount of easter eggs and nooks and crannies of the game are amazing. As far as I am concerned this is where the franchise ends.
MGS4: Lets make cutscenes in the length of all 3 LOTR movies combined, have the story shit on everything established in 2 and 3 for cheap fanservice. Gameplay itself is great however most levels are poorly designed, bossfights are interesting but sadly not incorporated into the story properly, and the nostalgia level is magical, beyond that is a piece that exists only to shit on itself. A shit MGS game but still an MGS game.
MGSV: This is not even an MGS game. No indoors, empty open world, lack of boss fights, redundant story that further just spites on MGS3, repeating Ubisoft type of "missions" with made by Kojima rolling credits every 5 minutes. A disgrace.
MGS 2 was supposed to be chronologically the last game but after death threats Kojima decided to make 4. MGS 2 is in its entirety a VR and that includes the ending. You never play as Snake either and he is probably dead after the real tanker incident.
it's that Raiden was a bad character compated to Snake
>Wasn't Rosemary not real the whole time?
She was real the whole time. She got swapped out with an AI at Arsenal Gear
You're a retard
>Loading times
>Skip Cutscene
I just need this game on Ps4 or PS5 where I do not have to wait an hour to actually play the game. The loading times are the only thing killing its potential replayability.
I played Peace Walker more than MGSIV because of the loading times.
That said, this game is the opposite to MGSV in every way, MGSV defragmeneted story telling left fans wanting while MGSIV felt like a rushed wrap up with cutscenes up the ass and too much story telling for its own sake.
>MGS4 was a fucking mess because they had to wrap up all the shit MGS2 put on the table
Brainlet opinion. It didn't need explanation and in fact no explanation can be better than the mystery. 4 shouldn't exist or it should focus on another character with the mystery intact. How did 3 suffer from 2?
MGR is not canon retard.
Hey maybe we can discuss things.
raiden is the only hope this series has, between V and rising we all know which one was the infinitely superior game
>muh death threats
>kojima was tired of his series and hated money you guys
I've seen the same story being told for MGS2 actually
Say what you want about 4 but that game could only be the product of someone who really loves his own work
MGS4 is only good if you look at it as some kind of logical extension of MGS2's message. It's actually an insanely meta piece of post-modern art that's deliberately taking a piss on the gaming industry and obsessive MGS fans. Designed as some kind of monkey-paw product where everyone who bitched about MGS2 "got what they wanted" but in a dark twisted way.
It's one of the worst sequels ever made, but it might just be the greatest worst sequel ever made.
>Platinum will never ever produce another MGS title with konami
I hate knowing this, too bad Konami committed pachinko.
>How did 3 suffer from 2?
the surviving people of MGS3 ended up becoming The Patriots and it also turned Paramedic in that crazy person who butchered Frank Jeager
Either way that means 4 wasn't supposed to happen and I heard Kojima say it once in an interview about the threats. How would you explain that 3 games are coherent and have logical even if outrageous stories while 4 is superficial in every plot point and makes every instance of anything in the previous games worse in retrospect?
That happens in MGS4 though not 2.
I actually really enjoyed 4 in the first two acts, but the game falls apart into weird contextual fan service cinematic shit for the rest of the game and it entirely loses that cool "battlefield stealth" gameplay. That's another reason V disappointed me so much, I figured there would be more of that double-sided battlefield stealth with two competing enemy forces, but there was nothing.
only BECAUSE of plot elements from 2
>terminator 5 is bad
>only BECAUSE of plot elements from 2
You are truly a brainlet.
MGS4 is the peak of the MGS series gameplay-wise.
Fight me faggots.
MGS4 would have been great had the levels been bigger and if the game actually had more fucking gameplay instead of cinematics.
I cant bring myself to replay it cuz of the cinematics.
1 is required playing tho.
>condensed
>linear
gameplay
pressing forward to beat the level isn't fun user.
This.
I'm mad at the game because I wanted to play more.
4 is unironically the worst main series MGS game by a fair margin.
It has the best controls wasted on the worst level design.
MGS4 desperately needed VR missions.
>game's tagline was "No place to hide"
>you can lie on the floor anywhere and get 99% camo index
This 100%
Absolutely
>he didnt just shoot everything and play it COD style
Hot take, GZ is the only good Kojima game
Anybody who doesn't remember the days of endless
>MGS4 GOTY 11/10 A MASTERPIECE BY KOJIMA DIDJU RIKE IT
posting is too young to be posting on this website, and frankly, is responsible for the death of this board.
they probably don't even remember when Yea Forums had doubles
>snake never told naomi that frank killed her parents
why? fox wanted her to know
fox is dead and he cared more about naomi's feelings towards her big brother rather than a dead guy who has no feelings on it. besides, at least he told her that Frank loved her, which was true.
>soldiers in the middle of a fucking huge loud gunfight
>if they see you and specifically you they still activate the alert and start focusing on you
I never understood this.
because the owner of all the PMC's is a man who wants him dead. he's a high priority target.
but its just some guy in a ski mask like the others
Always the same criticism of MGSV, but endless praise for old games.
>Kojima tried something different therefore it's bad
its a very based game
MGS1 is the only good MGS game. fite me
They're all unique, it's ultimately pointless to claim one is better than another.
MGS1 is a complete ripoff of MG2.
Yes, I said it was the best MGS game not the best MG game fag
its not universally praised. the fanbase hates it
Elaborate. What was wrong with mgs2. Be specific and use examples.
That tabker is some of the best stealth in the series
cause he has a heart
And they doubled down on it in 4 which makes it great
>THINK AGAIN
>starts running like a pimp cackling into the sunset while a mt. Snakemore submarine emerges in the background
MGS1 is the best because:
- It had great sympathetic boss characters, all with different and interesting motives.
- By far the lowest amount of cringy or pretentious dialogue (only Octacon's love blooming shite, the second half of Octacon's speech when Meryl dies and Naomi's bullshit at the ending). Aside from the above, the dialogue was good to great for the most part.
- Aside from some excessive twists at the end and ninja bullshit, the story was excellent with perfect pacing, good science fiction elements (rail gun launched nukes, genetic engineering, nanomachines, etc) and interesting themes (nature vs nurture, environmentalism, the politics of nuclear deterrence, etc).
- A surprisingly good love story (Snake and Meryl) that is well developed over the course of the game.
- Solid voice acting and atmospheric soundtrack.
- Gameplay that was different and interesting for it's time (with some memorable boss fights).
I made at least three threads mocking how bad the writing of the game was on the year it was released, and I wasn't the only one.
Not when MGSV exists.
Cutscenes the game
No argument here. The fact that it's one room though is the problem. Should of went on for another hour before you even reach mantis
Doing something different in 5's case was following a widespread market trend when the previous games were something different.
reminder that MGS4 has cutscene time 4-5 times longer than your average movie.
Kojima is literally over-compensating for not being a film director, can't make this shit up.
Correct
>4
>universally praised
4 got the most baggage out of all of the MGS games up until PW.
>never able to recover
Peace Walker was dope. MGSV is an engaging, fun game despite an incomplete story full of nonsense (vocal cord parasites giving invisibility power and photosynthesis is the most batshit thing in this series)
Why would I skip two-thirds of the game?
>good love story
lmao
>Doing something different in 5's case was following a widespread market trend when the previous games were something different.
Not really, the only 'market trend' it follows is being open world and seamless. The actual level design wasn't that different to Peace Walker.
Don't forget the most important reason why 1 is the best one:
No tranq pistol
I remember playing this back when i was like 12 because it was the only game my brother had on his new ps3, beat it like 3 times and not once did i know what the fuck was going on, i just wanted to shoot shit. That was funny
Because it's shit. Every plot device in this game is explained by "nanomachines". MGS3 is the peak of the series and real G's know it.
