I remember being like 12 or 13 and I saw it in a magazine, and promptly told a lobby in PSO filled with friends and randoms, and the general consensus was that the idea was "gay."

Sounds about right.

>Another Mickey Mouse game? Yawn who cares
>Hold up; was that motherfucking Jack Skellington?

I was really young. I remember seeing a commercial on TV and it blew my mind. I was an enormous FFVII fag when I was like, 9. The idea of seeing Cloud in good graphics was awesome. I couldn't give less of a shit about the Disney characters, I thought they were stupid. I remember having a concept in my head about what the series was like before I played it, and asking people at a camp I went to about it. When I ended up playing the game I actually really enjoyed the overall concept. I still feel the Square characters should have been just as prominent as the Disney characters though. Their story content is almost all filler, though it was interwoven with the rest of rest of the game well enough with the first game.

I was still into Disney at the time and thought that FF X Lion King was the best idea ever
but is right, the consensus is that it was gay

I didn't care because I thought the disney shit was gay.
I still don't care because now I think the FF shit is gay.

Huh

>this is the first gameplay shot they decided to go with
I'm dying over here.

The trailer in better quality

Now that’s more like it
>Donald’s and Goofy’s outfits don’t have any zippers on them
Feels so weird to see

Goofy and go die in the gutter but we really fucking love Donald Duck up here. Most people were confused that you didn't play as him or Mickey Mouse.

I still am.

IIRC, Disney felt Donald was a more appropriate protagonist while Square wanted it to be Mickey instead. Then Nomura turned both ideas down and focused instead on making Sora the main protag.

The first in a very long line of horrible decisions by Nomura. Somebody should've pushed him down the stairs, y'know, maybe final fantasy wouldn't be so shit right now.

I actually like Sora and his dynamic with Donald and Goofy, tbqh.

The OCs are -:easily:- the worst part about KH. It could've been a celebration of animation. Instead it's retardboy vs the retards.

>Remembers this and the commercials
>Expected a silly Disney game

I remember my older brother getting it when it first came out and I watched him play and everything I saw was amazing. it very quickly became my most played game back then, I think 200-300 hours over multiple playthroughs and KH2 was the same if not more, I was poor and couldn't afford many games back then. I loved that series so much and KH3 disappointed me so severely that I still get bummed out remembering that I waited this long for mainline sequel to two of my favorite games and being this disappointed.

>KH3 disappointed me so severely that I still get bummed out remembering that I waited this long for mainline sequel to two of my favorite games and being this disappointed
It honestly feels really bad that people feel this way about 3. I was more than satisfied with it, but reading the large amount of disappoint did hamper my thoughts on it and made me question on whether I actually did enjoy it. Hopefully the next game will be better received. At least the FFVII remake has the KH2 combat designer working on it so hopefully that'll fill the hole left by KH3 for you

I legitimately enjoyed KH3, honestly. Also, you shouldn’t let other people influence your thoughts on how to enjoy a game, user.

I was like 7 when KH1 came out and I found out about it like this:

youtube.com/watch?v=xmlSbVjpams

Also I found this while trying to find that, and it seems neat:

>behind the scenes DVD
>Nomura deconfirms the elevator pitch story.
But that was fun to think about. Fine though, okay, apparently Disney made a formal offer, instead of a Disney exec bumping into a Square exec in an elevator and hitting it off.

Don't worry, I still love the game. All the negativity did was made me think about whether it was the honeymoon period speaking or if I actually enjoyed it, which I did. My Critical playthrough further cemented my enjoyment of it. While I do understand the complaints as a lot of them are valid, I enjoyed a lot of what KH3 did. The only game I hate is 358/2 and I enjoy how each entry tries it's own thing, so maybe that's why I enjoyed the departure from 2's combat to 3's.

Attached: 1553735651293.gif (220x278, 32K)

I enjoyed it too, my main gripes with it are how little KH world exploration there is, how everything only happens at the end and how some characters get shafted, aside from that it's a solid 8 for me, 8.5 with Critical Mode and NG+. Not the second coming of Christ but far from a terrible game. And while the story was told a bit poorly, the plot development/what actually happens in the game is still fine in my book.

That’s good to hear user. I prefer how KH2 plays compared to most of the other games but I still generally enjoy them and what not.

Interesting, In europe we got a different trailer. Probably because FFX was released in PAL territories almost 6 months later

Seeing this comercial was my very first exposure to it. It interested me, but I actually didn't dive into the series until KH2. Then I was a lifetime passenger on Nomura's wild ride.
KH2 is still to this day one of my favorite games ever. Playing 3 was a breath of fresh air from the command deck entries though.

Christ, I feel old

WHEN YOU WALK AWAY

I didn't know what Final Fantasy was so I thought it was just a game about some donut steel person encountering Disney characters. I remember really liking the music they used in the promos too.

YOU DON’T HEAR ME SAY

remember seeing the ad on tv and being really captured by the music and sense of the fantastical.
I never played FF games so this was my first, unmitigated exposure to Square Enix Nomura Spectacle

I remember reading a preview article in a gaming magazine about this game. The writer of the article was concerned that the mature story and tone of Final Fantasy wouldn't mix well with the more immature and childish nature of Disney movies.

If he only knew...

Attached: kingdomheartssimpleandcleanstops.jpg (622x649, 59K)

Everyone thought it was retarded and the only reason we tried playing it was because there were Final Fantasy characters in it, even though we thought it would be a train wreck.

PLEASE, OH BABY

DON’T GO

Saw it in a magazine when I was 14, was incredibly hype for it. Really into anime and Final Fantasy at the time, so the idea of it being a crossover with Disney made me incredibly hype. It did not disappoint.
It was also fucking gorgeous, and a huge step up in graphics on PS2, I remember being awestruck by the particle effects in FFX, and Kingdom Hearts cranked them up to 11, Square was really killing it back then. I don't think I ever got as hype for a game until the first images and video from Mass Effect started coming out.

SIMPLE AND CLEAN

IS THE WAY THAT YOU’RE MAKING ME FEEL TONIGHT

>Went to Epcot
>They had a "Cool Shit from the Future" section with upcoming stuff
>Saw an early build/demo and played it
>"This is cool"
Oh how wrong I was

Got into the series thanks to an older cousin i looked up to, saw him play 1 and just got the game in my head , i was maybe 10? 11? Thought the Disney shit was gay but the fucking gameplay man , then the kh2 japanese trailers and gameplay came out and they blew my fucking mind, chain of memories was my first game of the series to play and loved it, still remember fondly when kh2 released and spent the entire fucking day watching my cousin play it to completion.
Loved kh3 too

IT'S HARD TO LET IT GO

Donald is an actual fucking nazi.

HOLD ME

And this is bad because...?

Saw an ad for it in some Disney magazine when I was like 7 or 8. Didn't think much of it at the time. About a year later I saw a commercial for the GBA game with Mickey in a black robe walking with some anime character, and my preteen self thought it looked badass, so I picked it up.

Attached: Mickey.jpg (480x320, 15K)

Fuck I laughed so hard at this

Attached: maxresdefault (4).jpg (1280x720, 67K)

I remember seeing it on some special spot on the Disney Channel. They had some sort of special feature that they would do between shows once in a while that was similar to what Toonami did where they looked at video games. They talked about Kingdom Hearts pretty extensively and it sounded cool to me.

I also saw the Simple and Clean commercial a couple times. I have a memory of seeing it on a TV while out to eat with my family at a restaurant and pointing it out to my parents that I wanted it.

When the game came out and I got it, I actually ended up breaking the game disc when I took it out of the case (fuck those old PS2 cases) and I started crying and my dad came in and yelled at me. Took it to Gamestop and the guy gave me a new copy out of the kindness of his heart. Probably came out of his paycheck.

WHATEVER LIES BEYOND THIS MORNING

IS A LITTLE LATER ON

REGARDLESS OF WARNINGS

No one cared, because where I lived nobody knew what the fuck Squaresoft was (or final fantasy). I was scared because I couldn't make out what the fuck was supposed to be on the cover.

Attached: Kingdom_Hearts.jpg (570x802, 137K)

>wasn't even a jrpg fan at the time and never played a final fantasy game despite knowing about them.
>barely saw any Disney movies either.
>still wanted it because I thought Sora was a girl.

THE FUTURE DOESN’T SCARE ME AT ALL

Everyone thought it was some gimmicky shit all the way until release. Remember we didn't have as much gaming media then, most people didn't even see the trailers, just read some articles or heard some news.

NOTHING'S LIKE BEFORE

are there any oldoldfags who were 20+ when KH1 came out?

I mean it came out when I was 9, most kids back then thought it was the greatest shit ever

I was 18 when it was announced. It sounded really dumb, but maybe fun.

It *was* really dumb, but kinda fun.

Man you know you're asking for middle-aged eldritchfags, right? Most of them are at work still I think. If it's anything my older brother was 23 when it came out, and he bought it when it came out too.

tbqh im probably still going to be on Yea Forums when I'm a 40 year old boomer, so....

Yeah it's just the farther back you go from millennials the more likely you hit people who didn't grow up with the internet, and they either still haunt the websites they were on in College, like SomethingAwful or Fark, and nothing else. Or they're total and complete normies. SomethingAwful is actually full of middle-agers now.

I remember thinking the disney/final fantasy crossover idea sounded retarded.
I wasn't wrong

Well, I mean, it did happen.

I didn't watch the trailer, (I didn't have access to any form of technology other than cable television) so Game announcements I got from video game magazines and Walmart ads when I would go to the US.

But I specifically remember going to the games section in walmart and reading the strategy guides for games. This one in particular intrigued me cause the cover art was so cool. It was a fucking sense of mystery for me. I didn't have a PS2 but god did I want to play it. I loved final fantasy and square was my jam back then. I liked disney as much as everyone else, but the mix of the two was so mystifying for my younger self.

>but god did I want to play it.
so did you?

Attached: 1539906135648.png (528x501, 293K)

I didn't understand what made an RPG an RPG at the time, and looking back I must have been convinced it was specifically turn based combat and the inability to jump, so I was psyched at the prospect of "an RPG where you can jump"

KH3 was FINE far from perfect, but bot the disaster Yea Forums makes it out to be. It's the same flavor of dumb and wonky as every other game in the series but you're and adult now.
