I've been wanting to get into the Final Fantasy games but IDK which to play and in what order. I'm aware that they are isolated stories, but what order is recommended for newcomers. I have access to NES, SNES, GBA, DS, and 3DS. I don't want to play any of them on mobile. So which ones should I play and in what order?

I've been wanting to get into the Final Fantasy games but IDK which to play and in what order...
Play III, VI, VII, IX, X, or XII
They're all pretty different games with a few reoccurring themes. For your first game I'd suggest X, IX, or XII, but my personal favorite is 3 because the job system was fantastic.
Play 4-7 in order then decide on where to go next from there
Start with VII and IV, either can be first but those two give you the widest scope of what the series is like and from there you can move on to other games.
4, 6, 7, 9, and 12 are the best and would start there. I also recommend playing the original version of 4 and picking up the Zodiac Age of 12 since it helps tremendously with grinding due to the fast forward combat/running option.
The American III, VI, VII, IX, X, and XII?
The whole numbering thing is confusing
Is there a version of 7 for any of the systems I listed?
American III is VI.
Basically: American II is IV, and American III is VI.
Outside of that, there should be no issues numberingwise.
start with 7 or 6
then choose one of the folowing 3:
1-9 or 12,both are different
2-similar to 7:then 8 or 10
3-similar to 6:5 or 4
then these: 1 3 2
dont play: 13 15
best spin offs in order: Tactics, crisis core,type-0,dirge of cerberus
these are all the games i finished, didnt play the others,11 and 14 are online so dont bother
IV = II in the US
VI = III in the US
III wasn't originally released here, but got a few re-releases later.
Nope. The Switch is the first time VII was on a Nintendo console.
If possible, you can try emulating it.
The old American system is largely forgotten now, but American II was actually IV, while American III was actually VI.
Nope, sorry I missed that part. It's available on PS1-4, Switch and PC either through emulation or the port.
If you buy a PS Classic for $25 right now, you can just download and play FFs 1-9 all on one console
Can I emulate it on 3ds or Wii (CFW and Homebrew) ? My computer probably isn't good enough
You probably can on the Wii, assuming it can emulate playstation games. Not sure about the 3DS.
3DS can't emulate the PS1, a Wii definitely can
Do you know if FF7 is compatible with WiiSX and where I can get an ISO?
Not OP but where do I go if
>I liked XII a lot
>Hated X
>Liked at least the first few hours of VIII until the combat system got on my nerves
ff tactics and vagrant story, both by the ivalice team
what?
Probably FFTactics and Vagrant Story if you liked the world, gameplay wise XII is somewhat unique in the series so it's a little tough to suggest something there unless you say what you liked about it and VIII and didn't like about X.
Should I play FF4 or FF6 first? I've heard really good things about both.
The real II, III and V weren't released outside of Japan back in the day.
I liked the massive world and design of it all in XII, I feel like X tried to do the same but was extremely linear and I didn't understand the plot. Xs characters also felt pretty flat, except for Yuna and Tidus, where in XII with the exception of Penelo and Vaan everyone was amazing.
VIII also had the interesting world going for it, with the whole school for combat thing being pretty cool, but I just didn't comprehend the battle system
FF4 is harder and has more of a classical fantasy story, FF6 is the peak of the old school design and has an experimental story structure
Final Fantasy II, III and V were not released in the west in their original forms and were skipped (though II had a prototype localization). II and V got released on the PS1 collection (or Wonderswan for II) and III was only ever released in the west via the remake.
As a result, IV and VI got renumbered as 2 and III got renumbered
so which one should I go for
play literally whichever as long as it's not the 13th one
but why not just keep the numbers as they are if the games are supposedly not even connected to each other?
If it's your first FF then IV, I recommended that and VII earlier already. VI would be great to follow up on them though and you can't go wrong with it.
You might like VI and VII as well, though they don't have quite the same world design it is still pretty huge and expansive. Combat in VIII is pretty simple I feel, and Junction while a little odd is basically just your summons and spells are equipment.
>I didn't understand the plot
I can explain some of it if you like, but it's just something you have to pay close attention to during the big reveals and connect the dots to properly get. Importantly, dream isn't used in a literal sense and Aeons are as alive as any other thing.
Because this was back in the day, where they probably didn't want to explain why they skipped two entries and then skipped one more.
Supposedly, they were at one point considering localizing V as "Final Fantasy Extreme" or something. I think there's an interview with Ted Woolsey about it.
Early 90's marketing departments, who knows.
There was also FF Mystic Quest as an example of that.
4-10 are basically a perfect bell curve of quality with the MMOs/12/FFT being outliers and 1-3 and 13/15 being the most mediocre for the opposite reasons
I was in your shoes last summer and played everything up through FF7 last summer
Emulate emulate emulate. (Savestate and fast forward save loads of time)
Play the GBA/PSP rereleases, avoid PC and tablet ports. Don't play the After Years. Play the games in numerical order. Use the romhack patches if available, especially for FF6's SNES version.
what romhack patch?
Play XV if you want a real game and not a visual novel
FF4 for dark knight kino and going to the moon
FF6 for magic steampunk going horribly wrong
I enjoy FF6 more than FF4, it feels more balanced and modern, relatively speaking.
