Any other “boomers” here find that they’re becoming increasingly casual as they get older? When I was a kid I used to be obsessed with video games, and would play any game from any genre. I was obsessed with finding long, immersive, complex games to sink hundreds of hours into.
Now, as an adult, I find that I don’t have the time to play long story-driven games, games with steep learning curves, or even games that are difficult to install. I like the idea of playing games like Total War Three Kingdoms, VtmB or EYE, but I feel apprehensive to start them because I just don’t have the garunteed free time that I used to have.
Now if a game takes a while to get running it feels like a waste of what little free time I have. I’d rather just play some console game that runs properly out of the box.
If a game requires me to slog through a few hours of tutorials to learn the mechanics I’m apprehensive to play it, because again, I just want instant gratification in my limited time off.
If a game is long and story driven then I feel like I can’t start them, because I can’t garuntee that I’ll have time to play them through to completion. There are times where I don’t have time to play games for weeks at a time, and if the game I was enjoying was a story based game it might as well be dropped after I stop playing for a few weeks.
The result is that the only games I can safely play as an adult are new games designed to work on modern hardware, and they need to be arcadey games like Mario or Hotline Miami, so that I can enjoy the gameplay instantly.
That's just your dementia setting in. I grew less competitive, so the only online games I play nowadays are co-op. But my mind didn't grow duller, in fact I got more into strategy games.
Christopher Bailey
All my best memories with playing video games have been getting immersed in long RPGs or games with very complex systems.
Simple games are fun too, but I think that it’s a shame that I find it difficult to enjoy more complex or long games anymore.
In the past gaming was a passion, but now it’s more like an activity I do to wind down.
How do you find time to learn the mechanics? In my personal experience I never find strategy games fun until I’ve sunk like 10 hours into them and learned the basic mechanics.
James Adams
Learning is part of the fun. I used to look up strategies and guides often back when I was young, because I was afraid of making mistakes. But now I grew fond of just jumping into the game and learning it as I go and making mistakes.
Easton Turner
28 year old boomer here.
Every time I've built a new gaming PC in the last 6ish years I've realized that there are no new groundbreaking games anymore. I'm bored of running around shooting guns with limited interactivity, I want to walk into a room and have the ability to interact realistically with every object there.
If we need to sacrifice graphical fidelity to achieve this, I'm happy to do so.
I'm at a stage in my life where I'm happier to try to experience more things IRL than simulating them via a computer game. Turns out real life has the best graphics of all.
Thomas Hall
nope quite the opposite
Sebastian Smith
You're grey matter has failed you from brushing your teeth too much. Next you'll be putting that little white boi clitty in a cage, listening to Lofi 24/7 and trying to take my guns from me
Alexander Garcia
>reddit spacing
Tyler Gonzalez
You're only hurting yourself theres no reason why all games made this decade don't look like star citizen and play like Arma 3 or Max Panye. Graphics do not need to be sacrificed to achieve mondo gameplay the only thing that has to die is supporting devs that don't make nothing but bangers
Connor Ramirez
No, you're just a grade A normalfag casual.
Adrian Morgan
I feel you man. 35 years old and I just want to play some fun shit. Yeah my reflexes are fucked and my mind is swiss cheese. But I still love gaming. Still play some online FPS and shit, but I can't really keep up these days.
Seriously having fun with the new crash team racing, can still beat a few of these whippersnaps
Jose Evans
Not really. I still get autistic at minmaxing stats/skill when playing games like monhun, or some old pvp MMORPGs like Ragnarok or Lineage2. It's just the modern games are shallow and don't need me to pay attention that much at completing them.
Mason Gutierrez
Games are a waste of time. I'm working on internet marketing to make at least a million a year and filling my head with useful skills. I play sometimes but nothing like I used to. When money is nothing I'll go back to playing but still nothing like most do wasting youth.
Gavin Young
yeah, well after you find a significant other, get a job, your own place and relative stability and peace, you want to have as much fun with vidya as possible with what little time you still have left, and as such you limit yourself to shit you know you can enjoy almost all my favorite franchises are dead, there is *slight* hope for a few others, so i'm slowly losing interest in videojames as a whole
Feel the same way. Im a 24 year old dad and a wagecuck now, but I used to be pretty obsessive about online games.
Now I just play shit like witcher 3 and turn my brain off bro
Christopher Howard
I became a casual/lapsed/retro/irrelevant gamer as soon as Sony entered the console market.
David Price
32 here mostly just playing Mario Kart at the moment.
Cameron Davis
Can you recommend some complex games?
Jack Lee
I'm literally the opposite, nowadays if a game isn't complex and challenging enough I won't bother playing it but back then I didn't give a fuck about that stuff, I just had fun with almost everything and got immersed. I can't play "comfy" games with no challenge like city builders or mindless action like in hack'n'slash diablo clones
Levi Thompson
I lost all serious interest in gaming when I was about 15/16. 27 now and I've never played a console past the 6th gen.
Dominic Brooks
No shit. The less free time I have the less likely I am to enjoy highly detailed or repetitive content. I have things to do, I don't want to spend all afternoon replaying the same challenging boss fight so I get it perfect.
Blake Rodriguez
so this is why there's no vidya here, it's a bunch of boomers wageslaving and phoneposting zoomers
Sebastian Hernandez
18 year old boomer here love this meme you 4channelers invented (ie reddit xD)
thats all
kreygasm
Aiden Davis
there was never vidya here
Wyatt Rivera
Yes but we USED to like games when we were younger
Brandon White
No fps games had more interactivity tthan duke3d or the first 30 minutes of Prey (2006)
Juan Thomas
I used to be seriously into WoW arena, 2800 rated 2v2s, 2750 rated 3v3s, didnt like 5v5 so I didn't do them.
As I got older I noticed I was getting slower and slower and my rating kept suffering. I quit before I went below 2500 to spare my ego. Haven't touched it since; I'm 31 now.
Joseph Lee
go back to Yea Forums you chuck sneed fuck and suck faggot
Jonathan Gutierrez
Hey OP. Play Rain World. Trust me on this. Or Brigador. Those two games reignited something in me. At least temporarily. I work 60 hours a week and have 2 kids and a wife to handle. But that shit was still so fucking fun. Rain World for exploration, gave me serious Super Metroid feelings. Brigador for blowing shit up, gave me serious Future Cop L.A.P.D. feelings (& crusader no remorse / no regrets). I don't play online games anymore except mechwarrior online and very occasionally coop with an irl friend I've known since elementary schoool
Adam Reed
Bassed wow arena poster it's it's too bad that there's no replacement for wow arena and it just got worse and worse every expansion.
For a while we had Bloodline champions but not anymore. You can try battlerite but it isnt as well balanced or fast/fun as BLC 1.x was. But those are the only games that come close to wow arena.
Owen Baker
Post on /vr/ It's a nice slow board where what you post will still be there in a few days. You will get the opportunity to talk to other people who don't play video games at all anymore, or if they do it's like a last resort type of entertainment when they're alone and have nothing else
Aaron Foster
You have been brainwashedby the cancer spreading garbage in the air that makes buy the cancer spreading garbage in the air that makes people actually spend money on mobile games

>Used to have all day gaming sessions >Will be 28 soon >Raising a surrogate daughter (just turned 8) in my niece because my sister can't go two seconds without fucking up >Trying to juggle full time work and college at the same time (in my final year of biochemistry so I can fight the rat race to get into med school) >On summer break now so I try to play as much vidya as possible >Just took a vacation from work where my friends and I blasted through Terraria again with the tremor mod >Play a lot of coop Nintendo stuff with my niece/daughter >If a game gives you fucknuts broken preorder gear I'll use it so I can get through the game >Don't have time to savor a game anymore >The only time I legitimately let go and have fun is playing shit from my childhood
I can still fuck up Mega Man like nobody's business and right now I'm playing Phantasy Star 4 for the eight thousandth time. Unironically the Switch is the console of my dreams because I can play it fucking anywhere.
Samuel Campbell
WELL SNEEDMOUR I MADE IT,DESPITE YOUR SEEDRECTIONS AH SUPERINTENDENT CHUCKMERS WELCOME,I HOPE YOU'RE PREPARED FOR AN UNFORGETABLE SUCKING *GASPS* OH EGADS,MY FEED IS RUINED HMMM…BUT WHAT IF…I WOULD APPROACH THIS FANCY GERMAN CAR AND DISGUISE AS MY OWN FUCKING…OH OH OH DELIGHTFULLY CITYSLICKERISH SNEEDMOUR
Xavier Morgan
I thinking that constantly, but there is still games that managing to completely suck me in when i tried them so it's that after years of playing vidya every new game is a rehash of things i saw many times before and, at least for me, it becomes mostly about specific thing i personally enjoy.
Brody Watson
This happens to eveeveryoeveeveryone, even kripparian who used to be a hardcfohardcore Diablo player and now he just playa herthstone
Wyatt Evans
Are you having a stroke?
Kevin Richardson
But the people on /vr/ play more games than the people on Yea Forums. People on /vr/ play video games. Yea Forums is mostly into cutsceneshit, which doesn't qualify as video games.
Jack Richardson
Literally me. Had a couple hours to myself and instead of trying a new game on my ever expanding backlog I just speedran ninja gaiden 4 times.
Gabriel Ramirez
Maybe he meant dont Play modern vidya
Logan Hill
Just imagine one of the POWs from Metal Slug raising a vaguely Hispanic Miyu from Prisma Illya and that's me and my daughter.
>Ever expanding backlog Oh god don't get me started. I have started legitimately just leaving the games in the plastic because I make crazy fucking money and live in Indiana where my three bedroom house is only 500 a month, so I buy games like I'm going to play every single one and that shit just isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Fuck I wanted to play so much on my vacation and sunk another 100 hours into Terraria. I can't fucking win. I can't even be trusted with my own time.
