A good story would've enhanced the movie but I agree that it's not necessary in the first place. However, Godzilla 2 had a terrible story with unlikeable protagonists and it made it objectively worse as a result. The fights were okay but lacked impact because the movie didn't set the right atmosphere, overused special movies like atomic breath, and set them all in barren wastelands were the scale of the monsters and their sheer destructive power couldn't properly be showcased.

I can vividly remember scenes from the first movie like Godzilla walking through the airport in Hawaii or the MUTO tearing the roof off the Las Vegas casino and there were few scenes like that in 2. The best one was probably Rodan flying over the town and causing hurricane-force winds. I also remember freaking out when Godzilla used atomic breath in 1 because of the way it was staged. In 2, it was overused and the same goes for Ghidorah's lightning breath. It was cool though when Ghidorah used the power plant to power up.

Given how cheap special effects are these days and how spectacle can be easily found in other kinds of movies, monster movie directors need to be more thoughtful in how they present monsters and stage fights.

This is why I unironically think RLM is the best source of movie reviews.

They talk about what they liked and didn't like but try to keep it in the frame of what they think the movie was going for to judge it fairly. So they like successful capeshit or action shlock but don't like failed attempts at high art.

I saw someone suggest it had something to do with keeping the rights to their films.

What? 1 was great. 2 inexplicably had both too much fucking story and too much meaningless action. Yes, I agree I don't want the focus to be on people but the fights in 2 were pretty boring. They had no weight. They had few "OH SHIT!" moments. The tone was all over the place (Ghidorah's heads bickering with one another certainly didn't help set the right mood).

There was a critically acclaimed lion king stage play where actors were just in stylized lion costumes. It was a silly venture from the start though since Lion King was always just an adaptation of Hamlet with the tragic ending eliminated.

Rotoscoping and incorporating live action into animated scenes has been used to create the 2D animation equivalent of the uncanny valley before. Bakshi's Lord of the Rings for instance and that one weird anime.
