It is about the games though, because if the games become so akin to shovelware that they're on your phone, more people will play them out of the sheer availability they have. It directly leads to more people joining the "hobby" or at least being lumped in with other people who are in the "hobby" so naturally groups want to exclude based on someone who plays only slot games on facebook being lumped in to those "gamer" statistics, and other people who play more traditional vidya not wanting those people being a representation of their enjoyment of vidya.

it's BECAUSE of this wider appeal that games are now being censored, because instead of keeping costs relatively low and scaling up gradually, there was an enormous flood of people entering the market, that companies like EA perceive as "gamers" despite not buying any of their games (and probably only playing one or two of their mobile games, if that), so every game has to appeal to the widest possible audience.
If we had less people playing, there would be less worry about hurt feelings, there would be no censorship. Or rather, there might be censorship, but it'd be a lot more easily pushed back because there wouldn't be people buying games anyway, justifying it by saying "well I don't personally care, so i'm gonna buy it" and just feeding the beast until it steps on their toes and it's too late.
