Have any developers that have access to the PlayStation 5 Dev kits, inside leakers, or anyone confirmed the rumors about the dualshock 5 replacing the touch pad with a touch screen yet?
Have any developers that have access to the PlayStation 5 Dev kits, inside leakers...
Sure ask away.
Ok, does the controller have a touch screen?
>DS5 with a touch screen
Oh boy, more unnecessary shit that will never be used.
it has a walkie talkie
The touch pad was actually useful occasionally for shortcuts (Dishonored, for example, lets you activate some powers from it without having to equip them) but none of the games on the system ever mention said shortcuts because they want it to be that same "version" as on the XBone... or something? Doesn't really make sense. But, point I'm trying to make, it wasn't totally useless.
Useless? No, but when playing a game that didn’t utilize it, you ultimately had a wide space of nothing that just crowded the buttons around it. Getting rid of a traditional “Start” and “Select” for Options and a fucking facebook button made playing PS2 or PS3 era games harder to adjust to.
>walkie talkie
sir, how old are you?
That idea is so stupid is probably true. It worked for the dreamcast and wii u, kek.
Unfortunately that's the problem you run into when every game is multiplat and wehave no exclusives. Any attempt at making a unique feature on a system means it just gets ignored because exclusives never come out to take advantage and multiplats don't want to (or are legally obligated not to) show favoritism. see: MS screeching and threatening netherrealms because of kratos in MK9, to never allow another one of their games on an MS system, sony's lack of willingness to open up crossplay with ms/nintendo even though they've had crossplay with pc for the last 8-9 years for a variety of games.
It's also why we're seeing this trend of every system just turning into a prebuilt PC. If it's not, and it has something devs need to work on, multiplat that just means either the feature is ignored entirely (usually after launch. Launch tends to see some okay/cool stuff. kinect had child of eden, dishonored as you mentioned had cool touchpad features, injustice replaced it's QTE button presses with touchpad gestures, and some more) so it's a waste, besides increasing price on the controller.
If sony has anything more than a touchpad (which they now basically have to have because of PS now/backwards compat) it's just another horrible, horrible idea that will raise controller prices and serve 0 benefit.
I Fucking hope not. DualShock 4s are ass tier quality with the cheapest plastic, 4 controllers of mine I had to open up and fuck with to stop joystick lag or fall-off, and their R2 L2 buttons squeak like a mouse. Putting a screen on the DualShock 5 would make them cost a lot more and be even harder to fix when the inevitably fuck it up
Dualshock 4s at launch were absolute ass, not arguing that, but have you had a new model one? As in, any of them with the light bar on the touchpad? I've had no such issues with mine in the 3 years I've been using them.
Light bar on the touch-pad? I’m not sure what you mean by that but I’m assuming that I haven’t seen a newer model based on my ignorance. Are they still expensive to pick up?
>tfw working on a game 2 years ago
>"since we're only on ps4, why don't we use the touchpad"
>mfw gaming magazines praise our innovative use of the touchpad and it's thanks to me, a fucking nobody
I don't know, let me ask my wife, gonna call her on her pager.
There's 4 (maybe 5 now, haven't checked for certain) different dualshock 4 revisions. 1 was the launch model, with the easily torn rubber on the sticks, really shitty solder on the sticks, and generally an assload of problems, they're very bad. VERY bad. Revision 2 was still the base model, but had better solder jobs, the rubber on the stick was replaced with the rubber they still use to this day.
Revision 3 is pic related, a little change to the batteries, and introducing another light bar to the touch pad, so you can see the color of the light bar without tilting the controller. Revision 4 is another more minor change, still using the revision 3 design. New manufacturer for batteries, new contact manufacturers for the buttons.
Interesting. Thanks for the info user
Yup and they have broken at a faster rate
There is no new lightbar they just use the original lightbar and channel it through the top of the touchpad so you can see what colour is being emitted from the front
I honestly really like that they're doing controller revisions after release, both sony and microsoft, I remember the dualshock 3 using mini usb cables all the way through the lifetime of the console when they quickly became obsolete, was annoying.
>broken at a faster rate
sorry to hear you've got such shit luck, user. Or maybe you just don't care for them, but there's been a significantly lower amount of returns and complaints for the newer revisions.
>wide space of nothing that just crowded the buttons around it
You mean the start and select buttons, which had far more space than the needed previously?
>made playing PS2 or PS3 era games harder to adjust to.
Are you telling me you had to adjust when playing old games on new hardware? That's crazy!
The touchpad has two buttons, that can be freely readjusted on PS now/playing ps2 games, to function as start/select. In the exact same spots as they were on in any other dualshock.
>add track pad to controller
>no game use it on a meaningful way while others just us it as a replacement for the Start/Select button
>trackpad doesn't even work while using the console's web browser to help you while navigating
>gyro sensors included
>no game use it on a meaningful way like the Wii U/Switch did for shooter games
>instead is used in the FUCKING WEB BROWSER so you can "aim" a the keys on the virtual keyboard to type shit
On top of the that all that useless and wasted gimmicks are the cause of the battery draining like there's no tomorrow.
What the fuck was Sony thinking with the Dualshock 4????
They were thinking that companies would use features. Go figure, multiplats are cancer and ruin potential because no one wants to put in effort.
>no game use it on a meaningful way
A game I worked on, we used swipe gestures to control auxilliary power to engines, shields or firepower. That was kinda neat, but 3 buttons would've been better any day.
Removal of start and select this gen were retarded.
That doesn't excuse why they don't enable the trackpad to work as a mouse to navigate on the web browser.
I found it useful for EDF with the chat wheel. It’s also instrumental for Gravity Rush 2, but that’s more due to running out of buttons for the game, and it was not preferable.
If playstation 5 gets a touchscreen controller I quit consoling for good.
Always been a mix'n'match but it will end the debate for me. Desktops all the way.
No joke, hate the fingerprints over the screen, hate virtual analogue sticks in apps and genuinely prefer the feel of a button to a screen.
It reacts to my hand in a way I can feel, a screen does not.
My tablet only serves 2 purposes, portable you-tube machine with a bigger screen than a phone, and an over-priced dongle because windows 10 hates connecting to routers.
You just know game devs will force us to use the touch screen in their games for the simple pleasure of showing off what their new modern game can do.
Fuck that noise.
Also not an excuse when multiplat versions of games on the Switch use the gyro sensors to help with the aim (Doom, Wolfenstein, Paladins, Fortnite, etc).
screen on controller only work for nintendo like games.
people who play sonyPS/xbox, dont give a fuck for inovation on gameplay they just want a old school controller for everything.
more like Dreamcast 2.0 baybay
>introducing another light bar
I'm not a fan of this. Thanks for the post, about to buy first new controller in years so I'll amazon an older one
Doom and wolfenstein and paladins and fortnite weren't multiplat, they were late ass ports.
It will be a tiny gimmick like the touch pad, they will force it for the launch titles then forget about it.
switch's gyro on fortnite is just them ripping off the phone version.
I just want buttons/paddles (would prefer buttons) on the back of controllers to become standard for next gen. I have an XB1 elite controller, and once you get used to using the back paddles, and rarely having to take your thumbs off the sticks, you just don't want to use regular controllers anymore.
