The way I see it, there are three categories of "never ever"s

1) Characters like Geno who has some bullshit copyright reason behind why they cant be included.

2) Someone who is a confirmed assist trophy or spirit in the same game, like Waluigi, Skull Kid, Shantae or Isaac.

3) Characters Sakurai has said no to in the past many a time, such as Goku.

We've already seen 1 and 3 be broken with Banjo, Villager and Ridley. So most likely a character from 2.

I'm interested to see if Yea Forums can come together for an unbiased answer to this. Who would fit all these requirements:

1) Expected by almost absolutely nobody.
2) Pleases almost absolutely everybody.
3) Originated from a video game and has had at least one appearance on a Nintendo platform.

As an example of avoiding bias, almost all the DLC ideas going around now don't fit. The 'cereal mascot' crowd would hate Crash, there are people who think Phoenix already 'had his time' in MvC3, and just about anyone with a sword from a Japanese game angers the 'anime swordsman' crowd. You might not agree but that's not the point here, we're trying to find someone who pleases almost absolutely everyone. I would like to pick Bub and Bob from Bubble Bobble, but I know they would disappoint lots of zoomers and anyone who dislikes 'irrelevant' characters.

I really, really wish they gave Sonic a new side special. So much care and dedication to the history of the character is put into guests, but Sonic feels like he was a bother to implement. I know he was added last minute to Brawl but there's been plenty of time to rework him now, and characters have been tweaked before (like Falco's reflector) or given brand new specials (like Mario's FLUDD). Sonic is done pretty well but his side special brings it all down.

No, and I even was a firm advocate for the "spirits don't diconfirm characters" before the release. But we are three out of five now, just big names, and none spirits, and we know Nintendo came up with the DLC on their own, while the game was in development, without Sakurai's direct involment. So it's very likely that the spirits that make the cut to the final game, were added with the intentions of not conflicting with the DLC (Eg. piranha plant lacking his spirit).

Right now, the rational thing to think is that this Season Pass doesn't include any spirit. With that said, IF we ever get more characters, either on a new season or on their own, is just absurd to think the spirit "rule" will continue to apply at that point.

I actually think that if Steve had a block placing playstyle, it would be very unique but also potentially very defensive and boring, depends how it's executed. If a block placing playstyle is too ambitious, Steve would be a generic fighter outside of possibly revolving around a limited/tiemd use TNT block for killing. There's really not much to draw from that's unique. Most of his tools are melee weapons, he has a bow and arrow, his potions wouldn't be mechanically different to fireballs, little explosions, or poison. One more reason I don't like the idea of him is because he would need to be visually reworked to fit into Smash, but his blockiness and ugly placeholder design textures are a part of who he is, so to fit into Smash he has to lose his identity.

The stevechads won’t be happy if he gets in, they want him to replace banjo now.

There are no more "obvious" characters. Banjo, Ridley, K. Rool and Simon Belmont were the last of them. There is no other character that could reasonably be said that it's universally agreed they deserve a place in Smash.

I am usually against any new Sonic character making it into Smash, and even I would be cool with Eggman. With that said, there was a time someone tried to turn Eggman into the new Stevepost, which started to get a little tired, but I think it die short after Joker's reveal, so I doubt it left any real resentment towards the character.

Honestly Funky Kong is one of those characters that I'm surprised hasn't even been added to Smash yet.
Same can be said for Dixe Kong and Waluigi, with all of the Mario and FE characters Sakurai keeps putting in each entry, you'd think Waluigi, Dixie and Funky Kong would've been obvious omissions for Ultimate's base roster or Sm4sh. As a big fan of the DKC series, I hope the entire Kong crew and Waluigi will be in for Smash 6.

"Obvious" there is a few if we think missing Comapanies of genres. Ryu Hayabusa for Tecmo, I would say Terry for SNK, though I guess Athena, Mai, Kyo and so one makes sense too. Layton and Jibanyan for Level 5. Some would say Crash, Doomguy has a strong case, and for genre, Resident Evil still makes a lot of sense. Pacman was for legacy, but as a Namco rep in the modern age, Heiachi or Jin are still the most obvious ones.

Still, this is way to open to opinion, and it's true that, from the long running request, we are mostly done. Indie reps is a can of worms, and first party, though there is plenty of options, the only "obvious" one, was always Dixie, but I am happy we went for K Rool instead.

As it turns out, he never got any love in Japan, and the reebot, though exellent, is at the level of a Indie Darling; Hihgly praised, not that "big" overall. Is more a thing of people thinking that Ubisoft is one of the few western companies to deserve a spot in Smash, and Sakurai teasing his fans on two games in a row.

Again, that mostly speaks to the genre then. Fates did surpass FF tactics, Shining, Valkyria Chronicles, and very much any TRPG in existences on sales. You said it's not impresives, and it may not be... but it's still the best selling on the whole genre.

Then we have Echoes, which granted, was release on the middle of the Switch hype, so it's obvious why it didn't sell, but Nintendo could just as easily get the message of: The game we didn't shill, sold less that the one before.

Dixie and Funky Kong yes but Waluigi is barely a character. Literally Daisy is a bigger character since she debuted in a mainline game while Waluigi was just made so Wario would have a partner in tennis and only appear in Mario spin off games. Daisy is also a spinoff character at this point and only got in ultimate as a cheap echo of Peach because she has the same body structure as Peach so it worked. Waluigi wouldn't work as a echo for either Luigi or Wario.

Waluigi would also have to be a mario character and not a wario character since he has not even appeared in a wario game. Waluigi also has 0 moveset potential since he is literally a fucking spinoff character.

It's important to look at its sales as a whole because you can actually compare them to other nintendo ips. The fact that he is from Microsoft now, is the big news, but both companies are downplaying it.

Again, I am really happy Banjo make it, and it is indeed a BIG deal, but business wise, he is actually not as big as Joker and Hero, and it's very likely Nintendo continues with more characters in the lines of those two.

If the Capcom speculation is correct, I think they would be mostly safe. Unless they trow a weird curveball and add someone like Morrigan (without a new game to shill), most Capcom reps are highly popular and even demanded.

Namco may have it more difficult, but still, Tekken, Soul Calibur, even Dark Souls and Tales of, should have enough support to pass.

Level 5 is in an ATLUS place where, is big enough to make sense, but I dunno how Layton or Jibannyan would be recived in the west this days. Same for SNK and their reps. Tecmo and Ryu I think they are mostly safe.

As for the western picks? I think only an Assasin Creed rep could mess things up, most people seem to be fine with the idea of Crash, Doomguy, Scorpion and... Geralt? I think those are all the none indie western characters in demand.

Speculation wise, Nintendo really would need to trow the weirdest of curve balls to mess this up. Also, besides some FE and Pokemon characters (and Dark pit... probably Zero Suit as long as they keep Ridley), not sure who they can ACTUALLY cut on the first party side.

What was the big deal with the music for the Cloud's DLC, we may never know. Maybe it was a think of being Sakura's idea to add Cloud on his own, and without Nintendo's full backup, this was all what he got. Then for the base Roster of Ultimate, to get Cloud back, he would have to agree to only use the exact same content as in his DLC pack, as Square is all for DLC deals, but not so much for colaborations in the base game.
