At the end of the day, Geno is just a secondary character who only really appeared in one spinoff game from decades ago. At least K. Rool and Ridley are reoccuring villains/bosses in their series, and Banjo & Kazooie are the main stars of all their games.
The closest character currently on Smash's roster that I can think of is Sheik, being a non-protagonist character with a fully unique moveset that's also only been in one game. But Sheik is just, you know, Zelda. She only got into Melee as apart of her transformation gimmick and not on her own merits.

Yeah Japan made a personal holiday of every single time a Dragon Quest game released in honor of Super Mario RPG's Geno and not because they figured so many fucking people will skip work to play that they may as well make it a free day. Dragon Quest is such a niche obscure franchise that it has 11 mainline games and as many if not more spin-offs spanning generations beginning at the fucking NES.

Let's be honest, Geno is literally on the same level as fucking Lanky Kong. They're both from games that, while popular at their time and fondly remembered now, are rarely officially acknowledged now. They' both are part of a larger cast that largely gets ignored despite them not being any more important than the other new members. Legitimately demanding Geno is like demanding Lanky, but people actually take it seriously because he's "cool". Don't get me wrong, I certainly wouldn't mind him getting in but I also would be incredibly entertained if Mallow got in instead since he's just as important.
