Idk, i played forst 3 gens, skipped gen 4, got BW, skipped BW2, XY and the hoenn remakes, played SuMo, dont have USUM, and probably will skip SS because I dont have a Switch
I did eventually play gen 4 and gen 6 and ORAS, but not BW2.
Probably skip gens in between because I didnt have those consoles as a kid and got back to them now as an adult because I got bored and bought the systems.

Gen 6 made me iffy on the future due to how easy it was and how everybody was so, nice. That and how they gave more focus to Gen 1 to the extent that the OG fags got megas but the starters that came out with mega evolution were shafted. It had some good mons, and I don't know how ORAS was but I never got around to playing since there wasn't a version for Emerald.
Gen 7 had so many cutscenes and shit that made it unbearable on top of being so fucking easy.

XY's Kanto pandering put a dent in my enthusiasm. Then S/M released, and there was even more. I was disappointed by the amount of new pokémon introduced in X/Y, but gave them the benefit of the doubt as they had to model all 700+ pokémon. S/M doesn't have an excuse for its minuscule amount of new pokémon. Now with LGPE and SW/SH quite literally cutting pokémon out of the games for the first time in the franchise's history, I think I'm done for now. If SW/SH doesn't end up as bad as the footage looks, I'll get it some time down the line - second hand. I'm not giving Game Freak anymore money until they sort their shit out and raise their standards.

I just wanted more challenge as I got older, but the game continues to appeal to the child demo. Fine enough, it just isn't for me. The games are so void of challenge and really content at all that it's not worth $40 that they cost, much less the $60 bullshit they're pulling now.
I did go back and play pokemmo a bit recently, and that was really fun as I got through all the story modes with retooled gyms and trainers and e4s, but all it did was just make me more sad that we won't get any fun stuff like that.

I finally got sick of all the removed content and each game being more barebones than the last. The horribly implemented removal of the battle frontier was the final straw for me. Mega evolutions didn't help.
I shouldn't say 'barebones' actually. The games have this weird way of removing actual content and adding bloat because gamefreak can't fucking think ahead. Oh boy, I sure do love hunting down areas with two weird stones so I can get the eeveelutions and I can't wait for every single game to need to shoehorn in a way to get like 20 arceus tablets and find deoxys meteors! And hope you like hunting for dozens of mega evolution stones every single game. But nah, the fun stuff like battle frontier, game corner, sectret bases, refighting trainers can all go. That's fine.

Gen 1 was good.
Gen 2 was okay. It had a lot of nice ideas, but was kind of linear. And the daily grooming of pokemon or time-based activities wasn't enough to make the lack of exploring worth it.
Gen 3 was good.
Gen 4 was slow and dull. Too linear again, combat was slow, and you were forced to walk through the same cave system repeatedly to progress. Mind you, I didn't play Platinum but it didn't seem to change the format of the game.
Gen 5 was the last chance the series had with me. Playing the JP rom was pretty decent. There were lots of new pokemon to screw around with. However, the localized version made it clear how linear and restrictive the whole game ended up being. Fuck you for trying to explore, fuck you for trying to do anything; go follow our pre-planned route and enjoy your forced date with N on the ferris wheel.
I did pick up Alpha Sapphire, mostly from nostalgia, but haven't been back to the series since. The one or two interesting pokemon hasn't been enough for me to drop $40 on one of the newer games either.

I could probably take the easy route and just say the game became shit, but it was really just because I grew up and stop caring for it. The Pokemon kept changing and changing. I stopped buying handheld consoles when Nintendo went full retard turning the gaming device into a tablet or giant beeper or some shit.
If Nintendo had kept makng gameboys I probably would've kept playing, but then I'd probably complain about how they aren't innovative and it's the same shit over and over again.
tl,dr I just grew out of it.
I tried playing a few years back on emulator but it's just not the same and I just ended up quitting after like 15 mins of wandering around not knowing any of the characters or pokemons.
