Luigi's Mansion 2 sold 5.45 copies. They're making a third which is actually looking like a pretty hefty title in terms of budget - easily one of the Switch's best looking games so far and probably their second most important title this year below Pokémon.

The roster starts with one hero and one villain from each franchise plus the original 12 fighters, then it's structured around rebuilding the roster with drip-fed DLC.

Although since this is a reboot I imagine Villager would be made taller to match the player character's appearance post-CF. I think there's a good chance of this happening. No one is demanding realistic graphics for Smash and the new big meme Xbox Two is bragging about is high refresh rates and resolution, something that's very easy to tick up on the same game engine if Nintendo ever pursues such hardware in the future.
The best case scenario is if Ultimate is the platform for all future Smash games with some small updates. Maybe at worst a few character cuts because some publisher gets retarded.

Finally someone who agrees with me, it may be a minority for now, but I’ve got a good feeling a reboot army is growing, and come 4 years time it’ll be half the smash community, trust us portniggers, we are just getting started.

Here is what will really happen:
They will cut out a few of the characters that only really came back because 'everyone is here' such as Young Link and Pichu. They will cut out characters that were mostly just added to promote something new and will no longer be relevant at the time, such as Corrin, Greninja, and Incineroar. They will cut out characters from 3rd parties that they would have difficulty maintaining the rights to using their likeness, such as Cloud. They will cut various stages in a way to fairly represent the series while keeping a lot of favorites. They will add characters that will promote something new at the time, such as the newest FE lord at that time and the newest Pokemon starter that they would guess will be the most popular. They will add a few characters that have had some demand and will satiate rosterfags, such as Waluigi. They will add a character from some new IP on their next system that doesn't exist yet. They will add some big shock reveal toward the end, like Pink Gold Peach or a Tetrimino. The roster and stage list will end up being about 80% the size of Ultimates. They'll use the remaining time on some new gimmick or mode like Roguelike Great Maze or Smash RPG mode or something. This is what I believe will be the next Smash.

It seems through ultimates development, that working on a 70+ roster was definitely hard to balance, even before ultimates development began Sakurai said that not all characters from 3ds and wii I would return, this honestly suggests that working with a 50+ roster is really hard, don’t be expecting a large roster to return at all and instead hope for lots of new content and gameplay changes.

The original N64 roster should all still be in, and King Boo is a dumb meme pick, so replace him with Jigglypuff. Drop K.Rool for a Kid Icarus rep, either Pit or Palutena. And if we're allowing 3rd-party characters, then replace Charizard for Pac-Man since we don't need 4 Pokemon characters.

I like Ultimate, but I just don't think it's at all realistic to expect each Smash game to continue getting a bigger and bigger roster, and it's especially unrealistic to expect "everyone is here" to continue for more games. A roster cut seems inevitable, and when they do that it makes sense to me that Nintendo would take that opportunity to make it a soft reboot of the franchise and make more significant changes. There are some advantages to having a smaller, more focused roster, such as fewer samey characters and (theoretically) better balance across the whole roster, and the ability to spend more time on each character's abilities/animations/sounds since they no longer need to spread resources across 2 gorillion characters, so it's like a roster cut would be exclusively bad.
