Because 'souls-like' just means 'it's difficult' nowadays. It has no connotation of the actual gameplay itself.
>Long levels with checkpoints spaced far from bosses so if you die you have to work your way back to attempt again
>If you die you drop your experience where you died and if you fail to recover it you lose it all
>atmospheric storytelling
>etc etc.
Not that hard to find similarities if you actually try.
themes and general aesthetic maybe?
Because gameplay is literally 2d Dark Souls?
>Checkpoint at benches/bonfires
>Gauntlet of skippable enemies on your path to your destination, who respawn
>When you die all your money is left behind on your shade/bloodstain, which you must physically retrieve
>Bosses are pattern-focused and encourage proper evasion to clear
>Breadcrumb puzzle storytelling with multiple endings
>Story itself is about a ruined kingdom and the gods that have abandoned it, or are trying to keep this world alive
because it's a shameless souls rip off and suffers for it
The thing is, Hollow Knight learned much of this from the other Metroid-likes as well as Metroid itself. The largest thing it has in common is the death mechanic but that wasn't even original to Dark Souls.
Even the lore is soulslike no matter how much autists deny it. Not even saying that is a bad thing
The Hollow Knight is essentially Knight Artorias.
Because retards think that the returning to your corpse mechanic and mention of the word "abyss" make it Souls, even tho those both were a thing decades before Dark Souls.
Dark Souls didn't invent any of those things.
Wrong, this is 2d dark souls
because of its aesthetic and recovery system most likely. Otherwise its just another metroidvania
no thats salt and sanctuary. hollow knight doesnt have different moves and weapons.
HK also has the assbackwards mechanic of making your magic weaker when you upgrade your sword which only affects common mobs
Play more games dumbass
Where did the mechanic come from?
Real life
You die and drop your currency. You revive at a checkpoint you activate manually and you have to go back to where you die to reacquire your currency.
early mmos
So Diablo 2 is a souls like too?
>Why is a game that's heavily inspired by a specific title being put in a genre that implies just that.
And please don't bring up Castlevania or Metroid. Yes, Hollow Knight was inspired by those and so was Dark Souls but that doesn't change the fact that Hollow Knight took some pretty heavy influence from Dark Souls as well.
I guess you're right, though I doubt that's where Hollow Knight took that from.
Because when you die, you lose all your money (souls) and take a debuff until you get back to the point where you died and kill the special enemy (your actual soul) to get your money and stats back.
Also you rest at bonfire benches
Look at these retards
Diablo 2 you don't drop currency and you don't manually activate check points. you just revive at the nearest town and you drop nothing on death.
The developers played Dark Souls for the first time in 2016 when the game was mostly finished. It's basically zoomers thinking Dark Souls invented anything when it's simply the franchise that became popular.
>Hollow Knight took some pretty heavy influence from Dark Souls as well.
Fucking false as fuck. The dev played Dark Souls for the first time after kickstarter backers made comparisons to their game. You are such a fucking retard. All of you are.
The devs even said they didn't took inspiration from dark souls
Because every time you die, you have to waste time backtracking to the spot you died.
So they just arbitrarily decided to awkwardly force a dark souls fad gimmick into their metroidvania whilst being purely innocent and oblivious to the exploding trend of the souls games?
Having to backtrack whenever you die to get your shit again is so awful for a game like this, it's obvious aimlessly inserted because of it's popularity.
Because it has tacked on, ripped off elements from Dark Souls that don't really fit in and draw a lot of attention to themselves.
Guys, how long did it take for you to beat the game on your 1st try, assuming you did it without guides?
I almost gave up at watcher knights (in City of Tears). Not a single boss angered me as much as those knights. I'm still not done with ther game, though. But I assume I'm close because I got the ''achievement'' for getting all the maps.
>cited as a "souls-like?"
Where is it cited as such?
>ripped off
Can't rip off something from someone who didn't invent it
22h but i'm also a completionist, 101% [spoiler}i know that's not the "full" percentage[/spoiler]
I got stuck on Absolute Radiance but practiced on Ascended difficulty and finished PoH the next day.
LOL, that's definitely better than me. I'm at 31 hrs atm, but that's probably because I have that autism - whenever I get new ability, I immediately revisit all the places where I can use it. Oh well, I guess I'll be faster on 2nd run.
every single day you make these same threads about this game with these vague and lazy questions in the OP that out you as the same person making these threads
it's not like I mind and the game sure is fine and all but goddamn I've never seen someone dedicate themselves on something as insignificant
it's been like two years
Ruined by scaley faggotry.
Source on this? First time I’ve heard of this mechanic.
In reddit
it's the same as this lmao
What?
Is that true?
boss HP scales with your nails power so if you upgrade your nail your magic will do less damage to them
So... It is better not to upgrade your nail?
Hello There Little Ghost
This guy seems to be, from all the peope that gave an answer, the only one that played hollow knight and dark souls.
Because it uses Souls mechanics, design and presentation.
kinda. the only benefit of upgrading is killing normal enemies faster
I like how they joke this is their 3000th thread. There’s no way, what would they talk about?
If you are a speed runner or you like spells too much
I wonder how many there actually are
though I just checked hollow knight and there's also at least 3000, what the actual fuck, genuinely makes me go wtf because it's so clear it's a circlejerk, what the fuck do you people even have to talk about?? not even mad just find it really weird
I wonder if I'll flip some day and decide to make 3000 threads about some game
To be fair Team Cherry admited that did the Story last.
They made the game and the world and just throw together the story and made adjustments to some level to fit it better
The world was not designed around the story but vice versa
If it's a copy. Why is it better?
Noted.
Bought this at the sale. Anything specific I should know before starting the game?
>boss HP scales with your nails power
STOP WITH THIS FUCKING SHIT
If i upgrade a fucking weapon I don't want to be the same/weaker. I don't give a fuck about normal enemies, you can't even tell the difference unless you upgrade it AT LEAST 4 times. What a fucking joke. I quit the game because of that reason and to find out that the Boss's HP scales with upgrades? I seriously can't believe i wasted money and time on this game.
You can Pogo Jump on enemies and spikes
Your nail damage doesn't make you a better player, git gud
This, is more useful than you think
Need some proof on this. Sounds like BS. I dps early bosses down in the pantheon with a fully upgraded nail that took way longer to kill as I played through the game.
No it doesn't
It's not a 1:1 ratio. The bosses do get more HP but you deal more damage then the HP they gained
Like lets say your Basic Nail does 10 Damage and a Boss has 100 HP
When you upgrade it to It now deals 15 Damage but the boss doesn't get to 150 hp. More like 120ish
With each upgrade you still gonna do a boss faster then without upgrading
The only downside that most people are angry about that you cant really upgrade Spell damage
That's why the Speedrun strategy for the game is to leave the nail un upgraded and Blast the bosses with the Abyss Howl + Shaman stone
it affects a total of maybe 6 bosses
Need a source my man. It doesn’t make sense to go for the nail upgrade since it would eat up too much time for little pay off so I don’t buy that it’s the reason that it’s the strat. Not saying you are lying I just want some hard numbers.
Since we have this thread here I can ask
Why cant you see the Completation % ingame anymore?
You could always see it in the invetory menu
>2D
So it isn't a soulslike.
Has a lot of bosses, you lose all your money when you die and have to retrieve it, and you start from checkpoints and have to go back through the level again.
hollowknight.fandom.com
Scroll down a bit for it
Unironically 71 hours for 101 percent before any expansions came out
I took my sweet time taking in the scenery and looking for everything, enjoyed every second of it
Was it very difficult? Not at all
No you couldn't
You can only see your completion % when you reach the bench before Hollow Knight
What should I skip for the 100% Steel Soul achiv
That’s pretty gay and shouldn’t exist. That said it doesn’t effect that many bosses. Spellfags kinda deserve for being cowards anyway.
The story is a copy paste from DaS.
>Long levels with checkpoints spaced far from bosses so if you die you have to work your way back to attempt again
>atmospheric storytelling
>Checkpoint at benches/bonfires
>Gauntlet of skippable enemies on your path to your destination, who respawn
>Bosses are pattern-focused and encourage proper evasion to clear
>Breadcrumb puzzle storytelling with multiple endings
Why do you guys pretend like these are uniquely Souls. Have you ever heard of these things called "videogames"?
Not really.
Its a fun game with a gloomy atmosphere, splash in enough difficulty for it to not be drooling retard status and you have yourself a "souls like" game
explain this to me
