You increase your affection with the character you want to be your beloved by speaking with them often, doing quests involving them (if they have an escort sidequest it helps a good amount), and gifting them items (especially things they are particularly fond of). If you speak to them and there's a light pink haze around their head with slight blush on their face, they're maxed out. Also, in Dark Arisen shopkeeps gain much less affection from speaking with them because in the original most people would get Caxton or Fournival on their first run.

I like how the game lets you hitch a ride sometimes

Legitimately just make a male, make their stature small, their voice light, and choose feminine parts for their face and hair. Maybe add makeup if you want. The character creator is pretty good like that.
