How do we fix the horror genre?

upgrade vidya enough for smells to be a part of it and make smell based horror

I wish we had more games like original AvP marine campaign, it could be really scary while also letting the player feel powerful.

Ero horror

What smells scare you?

based

The horror genre is fine, its just that most people wanna make an action game with horror elements instead of a true Horror game.

This is a basic bitch recommendation, but Games like Devotion and Detention should be the standard for horror games.

>endless poop games
its not worth it bro

"You" do not fix anything. Horror is a ultra niche genre with a few standout titles when the occasional autistic group of nerds make their own game according to their own vision. If you want good horror games, just wait. If the popularity and success of the new Resident Evil 7 and RE2 Remake games is any indication, horror is slowly improving in the mainstream sense.

Tawata on mondays is so fucking hot.

More games like Darkwood. I really like Darkwood.

Attached: vadim-galuza-darkwood.jpg (1920x3200, 785K)

Thanks for reminding me to finish it. I'm at the third base and have no idea how much longer it is.

The original fnaf was a good game. It wasn't retarded with the amount of shit you had to manage and it has the best forn of jumpscare, the punishment for failure jumpscare.

This guy knows it.

Attached: 1556035594231.jpg (434x486, 33K)

You're about half way

There's no need to put a spoiler on this because it's absolutely true.
The other games were fucking terrible in their own ways, but the original was alright.

I was interested in that game but it seemed like it'd get tedious and boring. Does it stay fresh the whole way through?

Kys

The 4th one was a good mutation. It's a bit more micromanagy but the dread of opening the doors to look kinda got me. All the others were crap.

It's the most mundane fucking concept ever. It's just a surveillance job with a resource limit. FNAF didn't even capitalize on the inhumaness in animatronics that caused the fear of animatronics in the first place. The animatronics are super cartoony, enough to draw in a very autistic crowd of furfags.

It does. The day night cycle has lots of variance that makes it great and you're actually doing stuff that you could consider "quests" and dungeons.
The combat is simple but good for this kind of game.

Stop making walking simulators

I used to think it was kinda boring at night because hiding seemed like the best way to get through, but the game actually encourages you to move around at night and defend the base.

Hiding literally only works the first few nights or if you corner cheese.

>old good
>new bad
its incredible how revisionist Yea Forums is
you all hated fnaf when it came out

stop trying to make horror things that it is not.

>Everyone on Yea Forums is the same person
Does it hurt when you think?

>this
There is something special about the fear boner. Where getting chased down by a naked lady covered in fresh blood triggers a flight or fuck instinct within.

What does thar even mean?

make it scary

>old good
Fnaf 2 came out shortly after the first one and it was fucking terrible.
Every game after 1 was terrible. You can clearly tell at Sister Location that even Scott was no longer taking it seriously. As a horror game, every single one failed except for the first one. 2 in particular was a complete fucking mess. And also
>Yea Forums is one person

He worded it like a confused, lost slavic man but I think he's referring to subverting expectations kind of shit like Doki Doki Literature club. Where it presents itself as a cutesy anime Vn but OH NO IT'S A CREEPYPASTA INSTEAD!

Anyone who thinks that smell is an element of horror is probably one of those who thinks that the SAW movies are horror.

Make sure that they're still "fun" to play.

more rng events, so everybody playing will have a different experience from the rest

I hate people who pretend torture porn is horror.

The only game is recent memory that left me with genuine chills and disturb me (the kind that had me look over my shoulder home alone from time to time) was Doki Doli Literature Club.
To this day that is the only horror game that has had that effect on me. And I played a lot of them. I don't care what Yea Forums says but that one genuinely got to me for some reason.

Jesus christ user.

It doens't mean anything. It's his retarded way to sound smart; "Hmm just make games better, put more effort into them, that's how games are good." Nonsense spouted by people who have no fucking idea what they're talking about.

>you're sneaking around a cramped, abandoned house
>atmospheric smells of rotting wood and mould fill your nostrils
>suddenly you hear a noise upwind behind you
>*BRAAAAAAAAAAAAP*
>you spin around and see a dark, shadowy figure darting around a corner
>suddenly, a terrifying smell enters your nose
>you are playing "Resident Evil: Braphazard"

>journal update
>everything sure is fine haha. Sure feels great being alive. I thought I saw a spooky last night but it was just my imagination
>wait... what's that over there? OH NO IT'S GOT ME!..... IT'S EATING ME!... IT'S EATING ME AS I WRITE THIS OH NO!....

Attached: 1347889130483.gif (145x110, 1.78M)

I mean no, I'm pretty sure I understood it. Don't make a concept that isn't horror, into horror. It's something that's been talked about for a while now, another example being how they try to make children creepy in a lot of horror media.

boo

Attached: 352325.png (545x774, 361K)

I actually laughed out loud (lol).
Why do all "audio logs" have this?

I really don't know why, maybe because it was late at night, the lights were off and I really immersed myself into it. But I was on my guard long after turning my computer off for a few days.
You can laugh all you want, but that's how it was for me. Different strokes for different folks. I've played plenty of classics that people praised to the heavens and none of them had an effect like that.
Jesus christ how horrifying.

You can't fix the horror genre because you're a big boy who's not scared of anything anymore.

Can't have horror without being horrified.

You shouldn't have read this, now a skeleton is inside you!

Pretty sure he means stuff like the "backrooms" which just took a maybe vaguely unsettling picture and made it into a reddit meme, and it wasnt even really scary in the first place

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

It's not even that bad with audio logs. The only problem with them is that for some reason the person dying triggered the audio log to stop recording and save and there isn't a 48h long silence that follows the death in the recording. It's the lazy variants of itchy tasty that are retarded. Even the first LoTR movie is guilty.

>implying anybody here is a big boy

I like action horror. Actual horror feels too tryhard.

Attached: scary cat attack.gif (312x320, 744K)

imagine the smell

>The only problem with them is that for some reason the person dying triggered the audio log to stop recording and save and there isn't a 48h long silence that follows the death in the recording
Or maybe there is silence but it's just not fun to have to manually stop it from playing every time

>audio log doesn't end when the person dies
>you just hear the slow crunching of bones and the tearing of flesh
>it only ends when the PC can't stand hearing it anymore

Attached: 1535233963619.jpg (920x594, 154K)

was that literally a suggestion? like...
>instead of complaining about difficulty, git gud
>instead of salivating over vidya girls, have sex
>instead of wishing for vidya smell mechanics, imagine the smell

>Does it stay fresh the whole way through?

Some people really love it but in my opinion, not at all. The combat gets a bit better towards the second half or so because you have more ammo and don't have to rely so much on melee, but the rest is just as repetitive. Scavenging for little reward, defending the house for little reward and repeat.

Without action, horror is largely diluted. Hide and seek horror can work to some degree, but nothing is more tense than actually having a weapon to defend yourself. The stakes become much higher and so does the tension.

>Audio log of a scared guy
>Hear just a crash and silence
>Silence goes on for 2-3 minutes
>Then you hear something come near the camera
>Tapping on the plastic of the recording device, sounding like it's trying to figure out how it works
>Finally hear the button click and it ends

Attached: heck man thumbs up.jpg (600x500, 30K)

how would a written version work?

Better yet:
>it's a helmet cam video
>the monster eats the body outside of the frame
>all you can hear is the crunching and smacking and occasionally a drop or two of blood get spilled around within view
>a few minutes later the monster quickly hops into cover barely within the view of the camera
>you can keep watching as the monster's eye's occasionally shine in the dark corner
>it never leaves no matter how long you watch the footage
>you're in that room

Attached: alpha labs sector 4.jpg (1052x670, 202K)

It would work best for games with the written note being visible in universe, or with a good text program to show it. Basically you could have something like that where a guy gets cut off from writing for whatever reason, and then in the corner of the paper have a few really shitty looking sketches of things that are "trying" to be like normal human letters, but clearly written by something scratchy and bad at it. Like its a monster trying to write like a person.

it didn't even make sense logically.

why couldn't the doors be locked so the animatronics couldn't wander in and kill the guard?
why did he even need to be on-site to watch the security cam footage?

Attached: 80s.png (524x488, 240K)

>all this cliche shit
I'm sorry, but you need to be more creative than that

More game like Eternal Darkness. Also, Eternal Darkness remake when?

Attached: 1532532403107.jpg (500x375, 59K)

ok mr cool man
pitch your idea

No need to. Someone already did.

Attached: Pathologic 2.webm (1920x1080, 2.99M)

Pathologic isn't horror at all. It's art.

Doesn't the girl from the ring have a pair of testicles? like not even a dick, just the balls?

All vidya is art.

Giant monster horror. Make the player feel as fucking helpless as possible as they wander a destroyed city with obvious signs of something terrible lurking around in the background, cultists, monsters that are small offspring of the big one, having to crawl through the carcass of another monster, that type of shit.
Play a Godzilla movie as horrifying as it should be in reality as a random fucking citizen in a city that's been ravaged by what can be equivalent to a literal God.

Attached: kraken.jpg (1280x580, 128K)

play graveyardshift.exe from itch.io
pretty fucking good, replayvalue, speedrunning potential, sidestrafing, fastpaced

you could have a game set in a skyscraper in a ruined city
the lower floors are far more dangerous than the upper living floors
and you could have a giant snake wrap around it throughout the game and have it smash its face into the windows to try and eat the pc

the concept is good, it's just the execution that was botched

You weren't here when it came out if you don't remember the constant positive threads about it.

All I remember is the years and years worth of people complaining that low-budget horror games had nothing but cheap jumpscares and fnaf did nothing but intensify that.

IMAGINE

real question, why do people get scared by skeletons? we literally exist inside every one of us.

>we
I mean they

post industrial horror

RE7 kind of did this

Attached: recandle_main.0.jpg (1200x800, 68K)

Fuck off, skeleton.

what about pre-industrial horror

Nah it's overdone

We go back in time and force Konami to fund Silent Hills

>Silent Hills
I hope you mean the plural of the SH games and not that fucking cocksucker Kojima's recursive 3d scan demonstration. If there's one thing that would have been worse than Konami killing the Silent Hill franchise, it would have been Kojima getting his shit-smeared fingers on it.

Rain World

Attached: rainworld.jpg (1008x1200, 136K)

>but nothing is more tense than actually having a weapon to defend yourself
The most tense is when the weapon itself does close to nothing against the horror hunting for you.

>playing lost in vivo and loving it
>turn on power and bullshit enemy spawns while everywhere I walk is now black, even with flashlight
I want to love this game but this section is some hot fuckin garbage

this

>horror game
>story is told through post-it notes lying around the area in random places
>people still keep journals in the technological age but only ever write on like 3 pages before buying a new one that you have to find(rinse repeat 8 times)

Attached: 1553058658206.png (732x874, 543K)

>indie survival crafting horror game
try to sell it to me.

>people still keep journals in the technological age but only ever write on like 3 pages before buying a new one that you have to find(rinse repeat 8 times)
this part always pisses me off
no one just writes three pages

OP’s scent

Horror games have to be good games first.
You need a gameplay centered about it.
Hence RE and SH being good and Outlast being hot trash.
Now for the second part: either a good story, characters, ost and/or design can make or break a good game.

Just is like real life with spookies. I hate games where I can't defend myself. If there are a few parts of a game like that it's ok but full on running around like a bitch is so dumb. That's why I never got into amnesia or anything

Remember Notrium?
Now it's Stalker.

How do we fix retarded OPs?

wot

does it have a shitty rng open world like every single low effort indie or are there levels, etc.?

It's funny you should mention that, Darkwood does actually have a pesudo-random world generation each time you play, but the actual locations in the game and scripted events are the same each time, just the locations are different. You won't notice it on your first playthrough because it doesn't change until a play a new game. If I wouldn't have told you about it you wouldn't have known. Some things in the game are not randomized though, and it's not really an "indie open world crafting survival game" in the traditional sense, just because it has those things.

>it has indie open world crafting survival game feature
>but its not an indie open world crafting survival game

It is though
HORRIFIC/HORRIFYING
Gore is a part of that, so deal with it faggot.

>Darkwood shill at it again
I liked that game, it was a bit boring, but i managed to finish a playthrough, but come on, its not that good.

Attached: avatar.png (432x299, 122K)

>I didn't buy rain world when it was on sale

Attached: 1541364135025.jpg (1242x1241, 100K)

>horror has to contain gore
retard.

You can deny yourself a fine experience because the buzzwords make you butthurt, or you can actually spend 15 seconds watching a youtube video of the game to see if you'd be interested. Or better yet, just pirate it for free from the free torrent uploaded by the developers themselves that they bundled with some extras.

Attached: darkwood mirror.jpg (1920x1080, 230K)

>You can deny yourself a fine experience because the buzzwords make you butthurt
why the fuck are you so defensive? I just asked for opinions, not for
>hurr if you don't like it whatever, you're gonna deny yourself a fine experience?

I'm not being defensive. You're literally spewing nonsense. I told you why I think the game is good, you gave me a response of >maymay arrows, and I told you to fuck off and try it for yourself then. The game being an "indie survival crafting game" doesn't necessarily make it bad, I was just trying to explain to you that it isn't an early access cash grab that is trying to be minecraft or anything like that, but you're clearly too dumb to understand the subtext of what I was saying.

Darkwood is a good game, and the less you know about it the better. I went in blind and shit brix multiple times. Very good horror game. It being "indie" and "survival with crafting" doesn't mean anything, the game is good if it's good. I do not care anymore, goodbye.

Who's the retard?
Did i say that you sorry sack of shit? No.

Gore is one of the many tools horror media can use like those jumpscares people like you cry about all the time.

It actually has gameplay and an end goal.

You only have yourself to blame user. Should have known from the post where he asked to have the game sold to him you'd be arguing with a brick wall. I admire your good intentions though.

Did i say that an indie game based around survival and crafting was a bad thing you stupid retard?

He said it's part of it, which is 100% true. Doesn't matter if you're talking about Flower of Flesh and Blood or filthy guro manga. Torture porn is a part of horror, has been since before you or I were alive.

>Darkwood
I forgot to buy that during the sale and now I'm sad. This is real horror.
