I don't think this game will be the one to actually fall, but I think this is the one that will set the stage for fans to actually start speaking with their wallets going forward. I think someone put it well the other day, that this is the Last Jedi of Pokémon (sadly massively profitable still, but it was the start of the fanbase actually turning en masse on the franchise).
there is nothing wrong with recycling, it should even be praised because it means devs are not wasting resources on reinventing the wheel.
thing is, when you free up time by recycling you should expect MORE content overall, not LESS. I dont belive for a minute that this new game will be bigger than other Pokemon games.

The problem is they're NOT reusing the models this time. Reusing sprites and models for past Pokemon was forgivable because they were essentially a legacy feature if they weren't in the game proper. Everyone gave them a pass on the 3DS games' graphics because they were supposed to prevent this very problem of having to abandon legacy support or resort to outdated lower poly models.
Then they announced that they're not doing that and everyone wants to know why, and they're not giving any satisfactory answers, which leads to everyone heaping the blame on Masuda and calling him a misguided and soulless businessman who's holding back the games, which is probably the most effective thing people can do since Nintendo holds their clean, friendly, premium image to be their main appeal and will be dogging the fuck out of TCPi for making them look bad.

To be fair, I'd much prefer a small team with a unified vision making a game than a massive crew of asset drones with one or two idea guy idiots deciding everything. Problem is we seem to have the worst of both worlds right now.
I really don't need Pokemon of the Wild or anything like that, but I would like if the series at least focused on improving the game with each new installment instead of keeping almost all of the exact same features with a few removed because fixing them was too much trouble and a couple of gimmicks no one asked for like Mega Evolution and Z-Moves to give the illusion of new features.
I'd be totally OK with cutting legacy support and having outdated graphics and animations if it meant they were experimenting with gameplay, but it looks like the "experimental" part of this game is a cordoned off area that looks and plays more like a prototype done in a weekend as a proof of concept for a future game.

As a Smash modder, it just baffles me to see what a fucking shitshow of programming GF manages to be. Brawl might have SOME wacky coding tendencies but it's still a hell of a lot neater and more optimized than any non-Iwata'd Pokémon title.
