Just thinking about them makes me sad. They were not only the most talented dev in the west, but also quite possibly THE most talented dev in the entire world. They churned out classic after classic for over a decade. Now all they do is chase after trends and make low-effort garbage they think will be profitable. Do you guys think they will ever make actual games ever again? What would have to happen in order for them to do so?

>They were not only the most talented dev in the west
LOL
All their games were shitty FPSes and their few original ideas were taken from modders and people who didn't work at Valve
The absolute state of Steam niggers
Hi Tim
They made one good game and then a very good tech demo for it's time that's not very outdated and rest of their games were mods that they hired or outsourced games, no way they were the most talented dev in the west, they were just incredibly smart hiring modders
At this point I'm hoping planets align for anything good to come from Valve.
VR will be a fad, yet it looks like they're dedicating most of their energy towards it.
At this point I just hope they update tf2, all else I can't care about.
Do they even have ANY social media presence at all? It's like you dont even know who works there, it's way to quiet.
They didn't make left 4 dead or counter strike, newfriend.
>if it was inspired by a mod they didn't make it
The only games they made were Half life, Half life 2 and Artifact, rest were modders or outsourced
>Artifact
Literally a reskined game desu.
>Do you guys think they will every actual make games every again?
At this state they tend to focus more on steam and that vr shits so I doubt it Unless vr become succesful which is unlikely
>What would have to happen in order to do so?
Just pleased the valve community, make good update to steam, focus less on VR while try to support small talents video game studio
I will be incredibly happy when Valve dies. They are a blight upon PC gaming. They forced everyone to move to digital distribution, which really just allowed normalfags to get into pc games. Steamtoddlers don't know how to install games, and some "gamers" have never even installed a single thing. It's fucking sad.
I've never understood why people consider this to be a knock against Valve. They have a history of taking student projects and community mods, and turning them into massive critical and commercial successes. How is this a valid criticism?
>Do they even have ANY social media presence at all?
We got a pretty good store out of it, so it was a good trade. I'd rather Steam stay up.
>You
Because this is Yea Forums and its prime shitposting ammo
Valve are making a new Half-Life game. Some kind of prequel. VR, of course.
its been stated multiple times by employees and ex-employees that they don't care about making games because its not worth it compared to putting some shit onto their games from the workshop and making just as much money as they would making a new game
as a convenient side note, pretty much all of those ex employees were butt blasted because they got fired
Why are you so insecure, they werent bashing valve at all just saying that they don't deserve all the praise when they didn't make those games all by themselves
>and making just as much money as they would making a new game
Is this part actually true though? I have to imagine a new Valve game thats actually a fucking game would make a shitton of money.
I guess I'll never understand why cosmetics make so much fucking money. Who the hell would pay real world money to look cool in a videogame? It just fucking blows my mind it makes so much damn money.
I don't think you know what a company is
>Why are you so insecure
lol
it's fucking scary how the gold mine of content igoese unnoticed with Steam games with mods. Look at autochess ffs, even battle royals was a mod and 90% of Esports or competitive games.
Steam has been sitting on a gold mine for a long time.
Most of the people who actually made the games are gone. There are no writers on staff at Valve right now.
It was a group of people who left Microsoft because they had something specific they wanted to do. They did it. There's nothing to bring the gang back together anymore.
You don't seem to understand companies since valve just bought those ideas and didn't make it them selves
but that's not even true
you implying installing games are elite task or what. please explain
Counter strike mod
Day of Defeat mod
Team Fortress mod
Dota Mod
Auto Chess mod
Left for dead made by Turtle Rock Studios
They did good things with the projects but they didnt make it themselves, they just bought the modders out and now most of these modders are rotting doing nothing for valve
CS:GO has a twitter account and the Dota Underlord devs are fairly active on discord supposedly. Its everywhere else that the silence is deafening.
and you unironically, wholeheartedly believe that any of these projects would have reached the popularity, quality or polish that they got without valve support and developer input?
is that what you're saying?
and it's not like valve bought the teams and threw them out after the game was done, they literally became part of valve and have been there for 20 years.
Part of me really wishes you were serious
Isn't it because the developers behind most of their games are just a skeleton crew that is supposed to give out 2-3 updates a year which main purpose is to sell cosmetics
The only games that were good they made were the l4d games.
After tf2 started dropping popularity valve fucking abandoned and put their focus on games that make money, and no one is saying valve didn't turn those mods into shit, they have polish but they didn't make those mods, they just made half life and artifact
>have an OP showing positivity towards a dev
>contrarians come out of the woodwork
God I hate this fucking board and this website
They are making a new one
>missing the "were" part
If you want a echo chamber go to reddit, people are allowed to disagree with OP
Most people in this thread are too underaged to remember how much Yea Forums sucked Valve's dick back in the day. For good reason too, Valve was a based as fuck developer for like 3 years
I read somewhere that Portal 2 made valve $200 million dollars, which with all the time and work they put into it wasn't worth it when they have Steam and cosmetics.
really? they've been supporting the game for 12 fucking years. find me literally any other company that has actively supported a game for that long (for free)
Buying someone's IP, hiring on the development team, and turning it into a successful franchise seems like a pretty good thing for a company to do. Not sure where you're getting this idea that a company needs to use its employees to build everything from scratch in order to be successful.
>(for free)
>le go to rebbit xD
kys retard you are the reason this board is shit
>created loot crates
>created Early Access
Fuck Valveniggers. You deserve everything you get.
yes, as far as im aware all the updates were free for everyone. or did I miss some paywall?
It felt like that for way more than 3 years IIRC, they were hugely adored.
No one is saying companies should do do everything themselves to be succesfull, but they aren't gonna be getting the praise and recognition as the most talented devs in the world by hiring modders
anyone who isnt underage knows valve aren't the bad guys.
>valve is the reason for cinematic games being popular
>valve is the reason for digital being pushed on us and outright killing physical on PC
>valve is responsible for esports partially
>valve helped popularize microtransactions
They deserve every misfortune.
They are putting the bare minimum effort in tf2 to milk as many lootboxes as possible, if they really cared about it they would make tf3 but that's impossible since people can't abandon their precious hats from tf2
GUYS COME BACK
DOTA 2 GENERAL IN /vg/ IS ALIVE AND KICKING 10 YEARS LATER
dota back over 1 mill a couple months ago the game is back
come hang out in d2g again :)
the underlords general is nice too if you like that game :)
they already had that recognition from half life 1 and 2, that's what allowed them to bring in modders in the first place
There are still a good amount of valve apologists on this board
Dilate idtranny.
what does that have to do with anything? of course tf2 is on minimum effort mode, it's been 12 years, valve has all but ended support for it. it took them 9 fucking years to make tf2.
Dota Underlords has an active Twitter and Discord.
You can talk directly to the Valve devs on the Discord.
How can you be that big of a fanboy to not notice how much damage they’ve caused?
Why not? Hiring modders and students and funding their projects is a pretty high-risk thing for a company to do.
hl>unreal.
Now fuck off epic shill.
HALF LIFE 2 BEST GAME IN THE WORLD
because im not underage and i remember full well how bad shit in the mid 2000s was before valve got their shit together in the later half of the decade.
>GOG for nostalgia
>Steam for everything else
How the fuck is it high risk to hire modders that make the most popular mods in the world? People are begging for a fully fleshed out game of those mods
>valid complaints
>shilling
What is wrong with you people?
If they were so based, why did they constantly lie about HL2? The E3 demos were completely fake yet they don't cop much flack for that.
>valid
Lmao
That's actually the patrician choice.
It wasn’t as bad as people claim, games were still released on PC all the time, if anything WoW saved PC, not steam.
>cinematic games
what? they were always a gameplay focused company, most of thier stuff is multiplayer only in fact, name one cinematic game they made.
>valve pushed digital
can't argue with that, although it likely would have happened either way, and it could have been worse, imagine if epic took the spot they are in now then.
>esports
yeah, they were, but esports was it's own thing and because valve was making multiplayer stuff a lot back then it made sense, esports became big based off of the big multiplayer games, counter strike just happened to exist, it's not like they pushed for it themselves, it happened, they embraced it. I also don't see the issue with esports myself, if people wanna watch others play games, who cares?
>microtransactions
can't really argue with that, although for the most part it wasn't as bad as it is now. They didn't ever do stuff as bad as it is today.
I dunno, why aren't more companies doing it then?
Half life is very cinematic and linear, everything is extremely scripted, almost no player agency.
Epic just did it with Auto chess which is the only relevant mod in the past 20 years since the modding industry is dead
LINEAR BAD
Because most companies prefer to make their games them selves or are incredibly fucking stupid like blizzard
Half life 1 > Half life 2
Kinda hard to mod anything when people slap dmcas on anything. New California was good though.
Aight fuckin tard
>CSGO's BR was in dev back when fucking ARMA AND MINECRAFT were the only two games on the train
>Retardifact has been in dev since Hearthstone was just getting to market
Artifact is shit but fuck you dont say they're just chasing trends
>Doata autokinesis fucking nigger cum faggot asss man retard fucking fucking
Yoyu fhe fthe fucking you fucking yea? you fucking yuea eea yeaaaaaa? fuck ying fuck you retman mrant tard fnucn fuck fuckin fuckin fuckn fc ghhhhg ghhhhhhhhg hghghghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhg uughhhuhhhuhhgh i fu i need a fucking hug so god damn bad i fucking hate my life
but yeah objectively autochess is one of the first few playable on the market but I have no real experience with it
If that dumb fucking vr game ever rears it's ugly head maybe life can get interesting again. Something I've noticed the game industry as a whole shifting back to is fun, but valve is old head retard brain at times and they might be stuck in 2012 mode where games cant be fun and they have to be cum sock fag nigger
Part of it is also developers not giving any modding support at all since it can harm sales of DLC or cosmetics
>games were still released on PC all the time
lol
>Bioware shifts to console development
>Troika goes bankrupt
>Ion Storm goes bankrupt
>id Software sold to a console publisher
>Looking Glass goes bankrupt
>Ensemble Studios is closed
>Maxis goes to shit
>Sir-Tec goes bankrupt
>Interplay goes bankrupt
>PC games have double DRM that limits installations to three per user
>amazing PC games go nowhere because the market isn't there anymore and they get 0 exposure (Desperados, Stronghold)
yes, PC gaming was very healthy in the mid 2000s. wasn't dead as fuck at all.
>modding industry
Ah yes, the highly lucrative modding industry
Are you saying the pc gaming industry would be dead today if it wasnt for valve
This is a HARD fucking fact
Half life 2
>feels empty
>ai feel tarded
>Gunplay is boring
>wow cool maps too bad theyere all so ugh
Had some cool music and I think I busted like five nuts to the alyx playermodel in gmod by noclipping inside the model's pants or some shit
Hald life fun(1)
>Killer sound track
>industrial themes are cool as fuck
>Guns are fun
>Later guns get really inspired
>More than a decade later spawns an incredibly well made mod (black mesa) that is everything half life 1 and more
Half life 1, c&c renegade, dusk are like my top three favorite fps's right now. I finally got around to watching gmanlives on duke and turok so i think im gonna pick up 3d and turok 1&2 this weekend
Thats one way to win an argument
100% dead? probably not, but it wouldn't be as healthy as it is today. Publishers were literally either skipping PC releases or delaying them, and japs were completely ignoring PC. If you're a faggot weeb you have valve to thank for bringing all that jap trash to PC, particularly Capcom games.
See hlnigger
Bioware shifted to console because it was and still is more profitable and most of the other developers either had very niche games which sold poorly or were mismanaged like interplay.
I didn't play either when they came out but I loved the atmosphere of navigating black mesa all alone, half life 2 just didnt live up to that, and it feels weird that half life 2 has aged worse than 1
who the fuck cares about your RTS games? that's an oversaturated market and always has been.
yeah and? still holds up better than 2 in every regard
>Make game
>Put thing happen when player here
>WOOOOOAH SCRIPTED PFFFBBTBBBBTBTBTBTBTBFBTBBTBTBTBTBT
mood, had to convince a friend thats the truth, dude has rose tinted glasses like a motherfucker for 2. 2 has everything wrong with 1 turned up to a ten.
Pistol mediocre in 1? we'll make it even more useless feeling and effectively in 2. The meme alien ar7 rifle or whatever is just retarded, I guess vehicular physics are better in half life 2 so thats nice
No screaming scientists shit/10
i literally only listed 1 RTS developer
Your opinion doesn't mean shit you fucking zoomer
Imagine defending cinematic garbage. Hlniggers should be shot.
you listed desperados and stronghold as ecamples of "amazing PC games" that went "nowhere because the market isn't there anymore"
Shut the fuck up cum guzzler I'm going to sleep it sounds like you would benefit from doing the same
neither of those are RTS games
and "the market isn't there" meant they had no proper exposure because retailers had lost faith in the platform and consoles were overtaking everything.
Imagine defending cod.
PC gaming industry at that time wasn't big or profitable but there were bunch of developers making games so most of them just went bankrupt, as time passed on gaming got more popular for both PC and console where it's more profitable than movies and television, only the biggest pc studious surived like blizzard, valve, bethesda and ID and all of them had projects on console since it was just that much more profit, if steam was never made someone else had made a service like it and we have no idea if it would have been less shit or better, what made PC gaming as big as it is today was the market desire
Imagine defending games with no agency.
Valve saved PC gaming when microsoft, retail stores and all the big publishers abandoned it. Whatever bad things you say about them, you can't deny that.
lol okay zoomer
are you fucking retarded? the underage oozes from you holy shit
The Sims was literally one of the biggest IPs on the planet
Diablo was breaking sales records
Starcraft was fucking huge
Warcraft 3 was massively popular
Age of Empires was a colossus
Doom, Quake, CS and Half-Life were all equally huge
Fallout was a commercial success
Baldur's Gate 2 was a huge success
Deus Ex was a commecial success
the failures started coming in at the first half of the decade, when the console market started overtaking everything and pc games lost exposure in stores. valve solved two problems with Steam: lack of exposure for PC games and heavily mitigated piracy by offering a better service than pirates.
Imagine liking linear levels and scripted sequences.
What the fuck are you talking about retail stores didn't just stop selling PC games and there were still bunch of other developers making games for it like blizzard, bethesda and dice and Valve jumped on console business too with porting tf2, portal, left for dead and half life 2
>every game should be open world
>retail stores didn't just stop selling PC games
Yes they did. Gamestop used to have big shelves of PC games, then it was just a few battered boxes at the back, then nothing.
Console market was always bigger than PC you retard
I just miss the charm and sense of humor. It was a super unique valve quality that's just gone now
Ebic hlniggers defending games with no agency and cod level design.
ValvE was the chosen one, the CHAMPION against the soulless greedy mega corporations like EA. They PASSIONATELY practiced video games as an ART.
Now the pretty much became the very thing they fought against. Completely disconnected with what the community wants. They pretty much just ditched Tf2. That’s like killing the goose that lays golden eggs. It just kills me inside to see the pale shadow of its former glory that ValvE has become...
I will fondly remember the 2010-2014 era of ValvE...
Gamestop was always a console game store,
wal mart, best buy, target, circuit city, compusa never took their pc games down and same time steam was getting popular so too were just online retailers like ebay and amazon so a lot of gamers ordered their games too
DUDE LINEAR GAMES WITH ZERO AGENCY LMAO
Valve: The Dota company
When the rest of the west was chasing WOW and COD money Valve was the only big budget company still making good games.
Valve made one great game and then once decent engine. That's it. The rest was made by modders.
And this was 15 years ago.
It sucks, when I think valve I don't think see before my eyes half life anymore instead I see lootboxes, all their last games have just been popular trends which they hopped on and tried to sell as many MTX and lootboxes as possible with the least amount of effort they can put into,
>linear scripted games
>good
Looking back, it's very easy to understand Valve's recent moves. They've always been driven by technology and spearheading it. Half-Life was their excuse to push physics and facial animations beyond what anyone had ever achieved. After that they drifted for a bit not sure what the next big thing was going to be. At around 2012 they got into VR big time and that's their motivation now - spearheading VR technology even if the mass market does not understand what they're doing.
The people at Valve still making games are mostly the new employees (case in point, one of the lead developers of Artifact and Underlords is a guy that joined in 2016). The old guard are just technology nerds.
based
i genuinely jumped out of my chair the first time i booted up dota 2
Push for technology doesen't explain their "selling most amount of lootbox for least amount of work possible" thing they with all their games
>boring open worlds with nothing to do
>good
You were an easily impressed child. Go look back to valve and blizzard games of that era. They are bland and generic. The only 'charm' is your nostalgia.
your spacing and "muh consumerism" gave you away
you have to go back
Lmao zoomers thinking cinematic garbage like hl has charm and humour.
>play video game
>game contains scripts
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
SHIT GAME SHIT GAME
CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
you are a complete fucking idiot.
facts don't care about your feelings
except they literally did.
the only thing that wasn't made by valve but was super popular was the original cs.
everything else was developed internally.
your retard opinion that valve didn't make everything else just because they hired some modders is just that. retarded.
Most of you fags bashing HL games are probably guilty of liking way worse garbage.
You know how over on /ic/ there's the "post your work" meme so that you can't throw stones from glass houses?
Yea Forums needs a "post your favorites" obligation when bashing established good games like HL2. I bet you've played and enjoyed some fucking awful post-2007 tripe with unskippable cutscenes before turning around to shit on one of the last good games to ever be released.
Ahh yes, Valve, the original creators behind the warcraft 3 mod dota
Its like you zoomers never played doom, quake, unreal, system shock, thief, deus ex, duke. Games with better level design. Hl and portal are cinematic garbage that killed gaming.
If you want to think about it like that, then even Half-Life was basically just Gabe and Mike hiring a bunch of modders to hack together something on the Quake engine.
Valve's development strategy has basically always been buying out modders from the very beginning.
Even Artifact's basic game design was already finished by Garfield before Valve got involved.
>spacing to separate different points
>muh reddit
most people here haven't even touched it. Yea Forums is full of zoomer cancer that unironically has nostalgia for mass effect, dragon age origins, modern warfare 2 and battlefield 3
See
ME LIKE CORRIDORS ME LIKE HL.
THE CAKE IS A LIE XD
>mfw Valve bought that In The Valley of Gods game and no one's ever heard from or the team ever again
kek
Every developement studio starts with hiring people who have previous experience in video games through modding or making previous games, half life 1 and 2 was an original idea made from the ground up
>They churned out classic after classic for over a decade
No they didn't, honey moon's over kid, valve games were always shit.
They have touched it, problem is they didn't play it when they came out so they don't have the nostalgia goggles for these games
Just admit valve games are shit.
Half life is halo/cod tier.
Name one valve game that can compare with id software and LGS games.
Literally this, valve faggots are subhuman, atleast Tim will save us from this mess soon.
halo is better than half-life.
Mass effect, dragon age ,mw2 is better than everything valve has made faggot
Name one positive thing hl did to gaming. Even goldeneye was better and more innovative.
>there are still valve drones in 2019
You just KNOW they defend steam to the death too.
>They were not only the most talented dev in the west
They never were. They've never reached the heights of Blizzard in any of their franchises, and Blizzard fell further than they have.
I'd be content with Valve not making any games if it meant they were making AFFORDABLE hardware, affordable be the operative word. So far all their hardware seems to be overpriced for their relative build qualities and none have been mass produced enough to be widely available let alone affordable. I can't even get the Index in Canada and even if it did come out here it'd be around $1300 CAD.
>not even a new Left 4 Dead
It's free real estate, I don't get it.
I love how valve drones didnt refute anything that i said.
I felt the same. Ended up getting the Rift S on Amazon and am testing it out for a bit before returning in the 30 day window. I am actually really enjoying it over the O+ I tried before, and I hate kikebook.
They are making a new left 4 dead, look up back 4 blood
It's hard to believe somebody else wouldn't have swooped in at some point. Digital distribution was going to be an inevitable outcome with Valve's influence or not.
The PC games market would definitely not be anywhere near as developed if not for Steam though.
>Turtle Rock
I hope they figured out what they did wrong with Evolve then because that shit was yikes.
Hl is garbage. Goldeneye is better.
Turtle rock is still the people who made left for dead 1 and 2, I think it will deliver since they are playing it safe and not doing ambitious ideas that can easily fail
Objectively correct, but subjectively, if you're a member of Valve and have been since the inception, you are probably so wealthy you couldn't give it away. In essence, your motivation to make another blockbuster is a bit lackluster since you're probably busy burning money.
Games like far cry, crysis, stalker expanded the genre while hl was doing linear cinematic garbage.
Sorru epic drone, ret me speakaru in yur rangerage: ching Chong nip nong bing bong *sounds of cutlery falling down the stairs* CHINA NUMBA WUN!
Half life 2 was a good game, but it just aged incredibly poorly
hell half life 1 holds up better today
Half-Life was a shit ton of fun, especially if you played it close to Day One.
Although, to this day I still only have a rough understanding of how the storyline stems from HL1 considering you didn't have to actually talk to a single NPC after the Resonance Cascade and the game is so direct you don't NEED to talk to an NPC.
Think "Blast Pit" or "All Powered Up".
No cinematic shit is never good.
VALVE DRONES
Half Life 1 was good.
Rest were mediocre at best.
Did they stop making it auto correct to pc bros?
it's almost impossible for them to make large scale games anymore it's like a hippie commune where every one works on what they feel like and thus nobody wants to be told what to do. Underlords had a small team same with that VR hands game had like 2 people on it.
It's pretty telling that the Autochess guys got offered a job with them but decided not go with them, that's like a character being approached after they won battle of the bands by recording manager or after wining the big game being approached by a talent recruiter.
reddit a board much like channel 4 told valve/steam, gabe more specifically, to fuck off. he tried to add paid mods to a well established modding community. they saved gaming/modding. not channel 4.
Damn it feels weird to say that they only really went downhill since 2014, it feels like they've been shit for a much longer time, but that isn't really true, valve was still ok in 2014
When the fov expands, and the wires are gone, it will be massive imo. It expands the immersion of the medium and when the tech is ready all it will take is a couple good games.
Vr is worth investing time into for sure, but it still isn't worth it to the average consumer. I just want those few good games to come out already. What do we have right now? Where are those 3 full length vr games that valve was talking about? one of them is half life vr but do we know anything about the other 2? why the fuck even release index with no valve games
>Hl is garbage. Goldeneye is better.
I wouldn't call HL garbage, but it's surprising how many people don't know that when GoldenEye released, Valve went into panic mode and delayed Half-Life by over a year and proceeded to scrap and redo almost everything because in 1997 Half-Life looked and played like a Quake II mod. A decent Quake II mod, but a generation behind GoldenEye in terms of realism and immersion. The 1998 version of the game is a lot better, but even then it is kinda simplistic compared to GE in a number of areas.
Based
