Parasite Eve was killed by a joint effort of hacks, really. Every single person responsible for Third Birthday in any capacity should be written out of the industry. Also playing it through the first time and the motorcycle, submarine, snowboard, and fucking RTS section genuinely surprised me. Snowboard controls like absolute dogshit though.

Materia system seems like seriously easy to cause game breaking shit more so than I've seen in any game in a while. Granted you can't get it until Disc 2 but putting Contain+Added Effect on a party member's weapon with cover+counterattack makes a lot of encounters more laughably easy than they already are. Wish I bought more HP materia to fuel a counterstriking brick house

X-II has fun gameplay, I think. Or maybe I was so turned off by everything else about the game that I'm thinking about the gameplay and how it DIDN'T make me want to roll my eyes and evaluating it way higher than I should just by comparison. Either way, the idea of giving characters super boss forms was cool, I wish it had been done more.

It really doesn't, you want to look at a bland story, then look at, say, Breath of Fire 1. V's story is simple and straightforward but it executes itself really well and the characters give it color, especially in the way that it knows when to take itself seriously, and when to have fun.

I'd say either FF7 or FF9 are decent places to start. FF9 if you want straight up fantasy, or FF7 if you want the weird fantasy+future-tech that about 25% of the series turns into.

I have played through all of XIII way after the fact when it was widely thought off as being a disaster to the series, just for the sake of giving the game a fair shake and making my own opinions on it. I still dislike it, very, very much, but I think its biggest crime was having sequels. If it was a self-contained game quickly succeeded by something else completely different and detached from it, it could have been kind of like VIII, a very divisive game with a lot of fans and detractors, but only that, one game. The fact that its setting was stretched out for a decade to the point where even XV [another MASSIVE point of contention for the franchise in its own right] is a side-effect of its development is what really kills it. On its own merits, I'd say XIII is a game that really misses the point and strengths of Final Fantasy for the sake of telling a more cinematic story appealing to West, to the point where it bends the entire framework of the series' classic gameplay for the sake of that goal. And on those terms, the story it does tell is solidly alright, with compelling characters here and there, **and a main character that's a bigger psychopath than Marshe is and potentially even the game's villain**

Nice opinions bro, but i hope you based it more on popularity then your own opinions because that is some basic bitch taste in not properly appreciating V and completely sleeping on X-2 and LR since those have surprising factors in actual gameplay (Just do yourself a favor and don't 100% X-2), LR in particular actually has a bit of a VP influence since IIRC Tri-Ace was involved in the development, possibly just for the sound or something though.

Meanwhile IV is good, but what makes it good is that it is Solid all around, not really spectacular, even though it DID introduce ATB, but everything IV does good another FF does better when weighting aspects individually. and for me it loses HARD because of that since i like having options for strategies and don't really care for plot, so the "revolving party" due PLOT deciding the plot composition felt very constraining, the GBA and DS remakes alleviate this a bit but it is still miles behind V even with that as far as my own personal enjoyment is concerned.

S: V, Tactics.
A:The rest unless it falls below.
B: XIII-2, X-2, LR
C: XV Royal, II
Shit: XV-Release, XIII, Mobages

V, VII, IX or X are good starting points, but IX is also a great FINISHING point too so I'm always hesitant telling Anons to pick that one up as their first game. It's built up on a mountain of references to previous games.
