This. Seeing Point Blank, HotD 1&2, and Time Crisis made me smile. And of course seeing fighting games so highly as well, although their choices here besides Alpha 2 were pretty standard (even if they had good enough taste to point out that Saturn had the best 2D fighters on console).

The retro era is superior in the sense that its equivalent to AAA games were of much higher quality than what modern AAA games are. You can feel this topple late into 6th gen and definitely during 7th gen when exponential growth of dev costs starts hitting hard.

I think the proportion of mid/low-level games that are good is about the same. It's just that it makes the industry feel worse because most of the big titles are between "solid" and "shit". You need to look for things that appeal to you, and many of them replicate the top-of-the-line from the 80s & 90s, since those are now within a smaller team's grasp.

All this culture wars shit literally exploded in the nineties thanks to Gingrich.
