Just finished installing this. Never played a Witcher game before. What are some things I should know before I start? I'm playing on Death March.

Don't play on Death March. The only redeemable quality of the game is the story and production value. The gameplay is complete and utter dogshit. If you want to get any enjoyment out of it at all, just play on an easier difficulty and enjoy it for the dialogue and exploration.
Don't listen to this guy. I started on DM and while it was annoying at first, once you understand the systems at play the game becomes surprisingly easy. I would imagine on lower difficulties you would breeze through combat without any strategy.
If you struggle, just use Quen. It's ridiculously OP if you invest in that and sword play. I'm sure there are better builds but that's what I'm currently using on DM.
DROWNERS, GOTTA BE.
The game has no challenge even in DM...cmon dude.
To OP, just enjoy the ride, take your time..dont try to do everything at once...is a slow game focus on story.

This faggot died to the first pack of ghouls
The ONLY way to play is deathmarch because it actually forces you to pay attention and research your enemies and prep for the fight in terms of potions, decoctions, and blade oils.
fag
The are you start in is basically a tutorial area (no shit but it doesn't seem like it) and ends once you kill the griffin. Take your time and explore, lots of secretes and good details there.
Also you don't have to do this, but it may be worth your time to actually invest in potion and oil recipes. Makes the game slightly easier.
I never said the game wasn't challenging on death march, just that the gameplay is dogshit. It's fundamentally flawed and making it harder by pumping up enemy damage/health won't make it any more fun, just more tedious
Is there an option with a skip gameplay button so I can just go through the story? Thanks.
Unfortunately no. There is always Cheat Engine though
Yeah it's turning down the difficulty faggot
Know that regardless of what difficulty you play it on it's piss easy. You don't need oils, research or really anything. It's almost impossible to even get hurt as long as you keep moving.
Dialogue and story is pretty great, game play is repetitive and boring. I hope you got all the expansions because those are fantastic as well.
I got this game and didn't expect much. I was blown away. The game has a gorgeous and detailed world. Take it all in. Play a few rounds of Gwent. The stories and characters you meet are what made the game so fun for me. Combat and the like becomes pretty routine after you know your enemy.
OP here, thanks for the suggestions guys, going to keep playing on Death March, I'm in the first area you're given freedom to explore and mostly I'm just exploring around / doing quests.
One question though, are there any consequences for looting random crates and whatnot around towns, such as in other RPGs where you can get arrested / have a bounty or whatever?
Yeah look up a video on YouTube that compiles all the cutscenes you no-skill casual faggot. Go watch Netflix, games are not for you
I got the full edition in the steam sale, been waiting to buy it for years honestly but I finally decided to pull the trigger.
Combat hasn't been too difficult to me so far though, I got chased by a pack of 10 wolves and kept dying until I just started dodging a lot and timing my attacks carefully / using the incinerate magic when I could.
From what I remember you can take whatever you want from wherever you want.
Which makes sense, who is gonna tell a Witcher they aren't allowed to do something?
As long as there's no visible indicator of people getting upset then no. I think the only thing you have to worry about is pissing off the guards which are always much higher level than you.
The reason I ask is because that's what I've been doing, and I'm taking items right in front of soldiers / NPCs and no one does anything or says anything.
I loved this game, difficulty is hard at first but becomes piss easy later on.
The only consequences are usually for how you decide to finish quests, even the small ones. You'll be surprised by which characters you run into again later on in the game.
There's a little easter egg where you get visited by a tax collector if you exploit a certain game mechanics to get money but that's really it. Stealing shit is one of the things he mentions but the other things have been patched.
You should know you're skipping two fucking amazing games and playing the most mediocre and generic of the three. Still a good game though.
This game is so boring it's amazing people can even finish it
You forgot the part where you fuck the hottest girl in the village.
Only the guards get angry and they can kill you in one shot and take all your money (assuming you are playing vanilla, there's plenty mods that tweak this (even reaction for regular NPCS to stealing shit)
should also note you can import your saves from old games to get to see/have cooler shit in the witcher 3
It is flaw, but most enemies die in 3 or 4 hits if you have a decent gear and perks for the level...so the fights aren't that long.
i've tried twice now to get into this game but i always put it down after the first quest hub world.
what this guy said. the combat doesn't feel good and it gets old faster than those Mordor/batman games.
As you can see from this thread, the gameplay/combat is a point of contention. I find it to be fun on DM, but ymmv. You can change the difficulty at any time, so it really doesn't matter. Take your time in White Orchard, buy all the gwent cards you can from innskeepers before you leave.
The only problem with the gameplay for me is that it felt harder and more precise in 2 which itself felt like more of a fighting game designed for the keyboard whereas 3 worked better with the controller.
