Should I play any of the single player games before PSO2 gets official western release? Are they worth playing now?

Is PSO2 worth getting into if I've already spent the last 4 years playing XIV, waiting patiently for PSO2's release?
I feel like I've been waiting for it for so long that it's just going to end up disappointing me.
Only other PS I played was PSU with a group of internet friends and I loved it to death.

Attached: 1562471003274m.jpg (1024x852, 71K)

>Should I play any of the single player games before PSO2 gets official western release?
You totally should. A lot of them are great.
>Are they worth playing now?
Depends on what you want out of them. If you want classic RPGs, play the original quadrilogy. If you want Diablo-esque grindathon, PS Zero, PS Portable and Portable 2 all have single-player story components for you to mess with. Alternatively, PSOBB has a private server that you can sign up for, though that's not exactly single player.

Phantasy Star IV is a classic.

If you like PSU you can try PSP2I. Very similar to PSU. There's a way to play that game in 60 FPS on an emulator with online. Here:
>sites.google.com/site/psp2iguide/playing-online#TOC-60-FPS-PATCHES

I miss the PSP games, I wish we got a new one on Switch, I don't like online only games

Is that a RAmarl? Are they viable?

Which are the more relevant story/lore wise?

Same here man, though please not on switch. I don't have one ;_;.

Attached: sarisa-2_phantasy_star_zero.jpg (1600x2259, 3.26M)

Why not? I know people who practically went back and forth between PSO2 and XIV. Fuck XIV.

What's the best way to play Phantasy Star I - IV on a handheld? The first game got a fairly definitive re-release on the Switch, how about the others?

All the classes are Viable, you can over power pretty much everything in the game by basic leveling up and with common ass items (Charge Vulcans with Hit)

If you want to go full autismo for damage play HUcast, parties of 3 HUcast and 1 FO delete everything.

None of them have any connection to PSO2, except Nova. The general idea is that:
>PSO
takes place on Ragol.
>PSU, PSP, PSP2
all take place in the Gurhal solar system and are connected storywise.
>PS Zero
Technically unrelated, though a post-credits cutscene does reveal that it's kinda-sorta like a prequel to PSO.
>PS 1-4
Takes place in the Algol solar system.

Basically they're all disconnected storywise other than some hints and minor cameos.

Attached: pso_comfy.jpg (1024x768, 123K)

What's wrong with XIV? The new expansion's been pretty great so far at least story-wise.

I only mentioned Switch because it's the only portable still alive, if it were to happen there's no reason not to put it everywhere
It ain't happening though

>a video game thread

Do my eyes deceive me?

Thanks, not worth trying to squeeze the time in for me to play them then. At least not now.

Never played it but PSP2i includes Red Ring Rico, Flowen and Olga Flow as a boss and I heard it retcons some PSO stuff.

Attached: 1540884698072.png (1294x774, 1.13M)

All that I know about Phantasy star are the Dota PSO references, like Sange & Yasha

Fun fact, it took until fucking PSO2 for them to correct that the models for "Sange & Yasha" wasnt actually that but "Kamui & Yasha"

Yeah, I wonder if SEGA is listed in Dota's credits. Like "Sange, Yasha are from PSO" or some shit. Because I reckon SEGA could just ask them to do that. Not that SEGA cares I guess.

I love Dota 1 for that though. All those references.

Could you actually get Kamui in the original PSO? I recall only ever seeing people with Sange and Yasha. Also, I assume you can now get all three (Kamui, Sange, Yasha) in PSO2, am I correct?

>Red Ring Rico, Flowen and Olga Flow
Whhaaaaaaaatttt???????? I played PSP2i for like 60 hours and never found those. Are those in the Infinity missions? The ones with Mission Disc codes that you have to grind for? Only thing I remember seeing related to Red Ring Rico is that the OP intro movie shows a pair of red rings, like so:
>youtube.com/watch?v=ilVSzhbpZ54
God I love the opening music.

Attached: shock_surprise.gif (748x550, 428K)

>that bit in PSP2i when Emilia calls the Clad 6 home
Warms up my heart every time. Shit was cute.

Dude Olga flow is the first thing in the intro as well, like I said I never played it but seen videos.

Here is PSP2i version of Olga Flow boss fight.

How dated are the original games? Never played them before

I can't really weigh in on this since I haven't played too deep into either PSO2 or XIV, but its still a bit amazing to me how people circlejerked abou SEGA refused to update us about eng PSO2 for 8 years only for it to be seemingly untalked about now that its confirmed. Granted, many eng speakers who were really interested it just played the jp servers with fan patches and I hear in general that PSO2 is in a decline, but I guess I was hoping to see more active PS discussions and stuff now. There will probably be actual discussion once the game is actually out. Truth be told though, I'm most excited that PSO2 is out of the way since now people can now stop harrassing SEGA about it and now harrass them for remakes of the old games.
Play them how you feel, I'd recommend at least playing PSIV out of the original games if you're pressed for time but have an interest in them since it's pretty straight forward and not as grindy as the others can get (you can beat it with characters around level 35-45).
This reminds me, does anyone know whats up with the PSP2i translation? Last I remember its still going but it also seems to have still made absolutely no progress.

Attached: tgxgwfgcs1r84pkp.gif (372x280, 35K)

PSIV aged the best out of them all in my opinion, it plays and looks a lot closer to the jrpgs that come out today. Outside of that, the other games still don't look as old per say (especially when you look at how great the first PS game looked next to the first FF game which game out 3 days before it), but if you're not used to playing old games at all then they can feel a bit of a struggle to get through at times, especially the second game and it's terrible dungeon designs.

Attached: 1548709138349.png (896x686, 137K)

>tfw PS had a strong impact on the JRPG genre
>tfw SEGA constantly neglects the series roots compared to other iconic JRPGS
It's tough being a classic phantasy star fan.

Yes.

are there undubs of the universe and portable games?

How feasable is it to play PSP2i over the intercunts using an emulator, not a real PSP because fuck that horrible small screen eyecancer experience? If you were to simulate a LAN would it be a unplayable lagfest, does it do client/server style, or do all players suffer the lag even the host?

Asking out of curiosity more than anything, it's not like I have anybody to play with.

Attached: Phantasy Star.jpg (835x626, 200K)

I played through Phantasy Star 1 when it was ported to Switch. This was after attempting it via Master System emulation years ago during that time in your life when you discover your computer is magic. I appreciate that they added a map, made the game easier, but I still thought it was shit. You had about 10 complete sentences of "story" in the game and barely any direction at all. I'll admit I had to consult gamefaqs when you started fucking around the ice world.

Apparently I own the 360 version of Phantasy Star II eventhough I don't remember buying it (that is now backward compatible on Xbox One) so I'm playing that. I appreciate that the annoying first person dungeons are gone but its still a boring grind.

When does it get good? "It" being the series. No hate intended.

IV is definitely the shining Jewel of the series, could have been Chrono Trigger tier if not for Chrono Trigger itself. I was revolutionary for its time but doesn't really stand up these days, II is mostly known as the bar for JRPG ballbusting rather than its storytelling. It got 8 fucking prequels for a reason.

Universe was fucking garbage. I LITERALLY kept falling asleep while I played.

As the previous user said, IV is the game. It might sound like a waste if a series only gets good when it ends, but I feel how IV took everything that the series had built upon each entry and puts it together is one of the best payoffs I've ever had the pleasure to experience and still can't find another series that matches it, outside maybe Shining Force.
PSU as a whole in general or just the first game? I still need to beat the first game but I liked what I played of both that and PSP so far. I like the character designs a lot in the games too, even if they might not be used the best.

Well I'll deep into 2 so I might as well see it through. The enemy spikes in this game is ridiculous. You could all be gravy until you move up to the next floor and then "the fun stops here".

Speaking of PSU, I heard the servers were shutdown for that game. I'm making a list of games from that era to get before the prices jump back up, can I still play Universe? More importantly, should I?

Attached: strang.jpg (1600x1069, 265K)

I like Kyra. She's cute.

I like jrpg Ami too.

She's proactive and big sisterly

Attached: 0be03bb15ea667f0d5b2e29daf2fb450--video-games.jpg (236x314, 21K)

I somewhat agree because I like her and all the other characters but I still think the game was the perfect length and what the characters actually did get went a long way in terms of developing their personalities. A lot of games back then sort of painted broad strokes and let the player fill in the gaps themselves which I honestly wish we'd go back too.

Attached: 1354329939967.jpg (800x800, 356K)

PSU now has a private server you can play on. As for whether or not you should play it, people say it's one of the weaker Phantasy Star Online games.

I always liked Universe a lot but haven't checked out Clemintine in months.

I want to play all the fantasy star games on pc
spoonfeed me

vimm
That's all you need to know.

>PSO2 finally coming to the west after all these years
I get its just to milk the game a bit more but with the west, but I'm glad that they're finally fucking doing it after all this time. Not sure what I should play as, when I messed around with it a couple times, I played a Human Hunter and unga bunga'd with my big sword, and at one point my massive tuna fish.

It's not the broken piece of shite it once was, but the admin is power mad and makes massive balance changes on a whim. What sort of changes? here's an example: the longbow, once a super slow and fairly useless weapon now fires incredibly fast, making it godlike. Frankly it plays less like PSU than Phantasy Star Portable does.

I'd be outright infuriated if I gave much of a fuck about PSU but I've had my fill. I'll give playing PSU online another try in another 5 years or so when a proper private server inevidibly spawns.

Indeed

cant believe I used to have the patience to grind psobb all the time
feels like such a timesink nowadays

Ragol, Agol, Algol, it's all translation differences.
Falz sneaks on every ship the gets sent off to another system and starts shit up again when his time is up. It was the main plot of 3, evil that came from earth was 2, and evil that came from somewhere non specific was 1.

Attached: 4L_8aGxV6Gt.jpg (720x501, 155K)

I'm only 20 hours into Blue Burst, but even then I'm still not sure if I agree with that. Games like Destiny are arguably more along the lines of time sinks due to PvP modes and the amount of time it takes to get exotic/good legendary drops.

I get what you mean, it's something I still like and appreciate. When I played as a kid though, I was a bit confused on Kyra saying she was a big sister though since it felt like something she more said than actually showed around Chaz, though I can see it more when I replay since I'm older.

i dont think phantasy star is going to get a rep

Every time I play Phantasy Star IV I get to the second Dark Force fight and something happens. on an emulator my game save corrupted, on the Genesis my save battery died, playing it on the Ultimate Genesis Collection, my 360 just up and died and my PS3 was stolen when I had just finished the first Dark Force fight. I so badly want to finish this game but I just give the fuck up.

Pic unrelated

Ah, Alys. When I was younger first playing the game I actually thought you where the main character.

Just got this and I'm loving it. AGES mode makes it super playable. It doesn't make it piss easy, it just reduces the time spent repeating the same tedium.

Sometimes I think about what a field day some people would have if they knew this about the series and am glad that it's relatively dead and forgotten.... at least there's nothing of similar to note in PSIV.

Attached: sean2.jpg (120x114, 4K)

She got a really early death, always worried me that characters were frequently going to die.

Glad you're having a good time user. Lets hope the other games get Sega Ages releases like this as well.

Attached: 1558670065215.jpg (836x955, 256K)

Yeah. You can play PSO2 on your off time from XIV. You'll put a majority of your time into Emergency Quests and Time Attack Client Orders (TACOs)

Attached: 1498780579244.jpg (1920x1080, 209K)

I legitimately forgot pso2 got announced for western release. Have they mentioned ANYTHING else about it? I've been playing clementine lately and it's pretty great. Still ironing out bugs but it's amazing how much content is there.

Some of you guys are alright. Don't go to Palma tomorrow.

Attached: mother brain.jpg (840x408, 169K)

What is there for Sega to really say about it? They said all the content would be there and it'd be here spring of next year. I guess the only question I've got on my mind is if we're getting PSO2es because I only used the mobile game for extra storage space and the daily 15K exp tickets.

There is an extremely forgotten South Korean remake of Phantasy Star for the mobile phone. Someone even had the balls to translate it to English and make an IPO patch. I emulated it and it's the version I got the furthest on. There's some mechanical tweaks, can't think of anything really technical, but you definitely move faster in dungeons, music is like PC midi, and graphics are much better.

Go ahead and ride the western release train but I wouldn't go back after playing jp for 3 years

I think all they've still said is that it's coming out next year, though really thinking about it I'm suddenly getting flashbacks to when they said something like that when it was first announced in the west to begin with. Having been announced on the big screen at E3 along with Microsoft paying for servers and stuff is good enough insurance that it will actually come out this time though.
This game me a good chuckle user, thanks.

Attached: DqbRJ1QXQAAkxgU.jpg (540x516, 51K)

Oh you could say a lot. Go over the classes, really sell the english version of the game for people who might not be in the know. There's a lot of ground to cover.

Attached: fuck skeletons.jpg (208x249, 60K)

>numan is an erectile dysfunction company

Oh then yeah they should do that. I guess maybe they're waiting till next year to start that? Just so they don't run out of stuff to talk about before the game comes out. But I do really hope they market the hell out of it in the west because there definitely is a ton of people that don't even know what the hell Phantasy Star or even PSO is. Though I suppose the two are pretty different so maybe there isn't much of a need to talk about the former as opposed to the latter.

Reminder to play the "Adventure" games for all the characters in PSII via the translations available. They were text adventure stories released on Sega Net only in Japan, but eventually translated. It will give context and development to the characters not there in the base game. I also think they came out before PSII, actually.

>nights staying up till sunrise playing PSO v.2 on Dreamcast with online and irl friends

I miss those old times and my old internet buddies. Used to troll AOL chats with them as well back then. I have no idea what they're up to now but I hope they're doing well.

Attached: pso01.jpg (1280x1024, 170K)

I remember playing Anna's Story while in college during web scripting. I also remember getting to buy her a hang glider in the beginning of it and chuckling.

But one of the proposed ideas for a PSV was that Algo would have an overbreeding problem wth Numans.
Seconded, I like the Adventures games a lot. They're short but the did a really good job of fleshing out even more PSII's world, along with giving nice fun facts such as how Rudo and Nei having met before and how Hugh actually has a gf (or had a gf, they never mention if they're still together by the time PSII starts/ends).

Attached: 1558649605454.jpg (603x800, 50K)

It's easy to forgot all of the friends you make online, the ones you tell most of your real secrets to and hope the ones they told you were the truth, or that they were even who they said they were.

I tried the gamecube games with a friend just last week. It was poo and we couldn't do the story together.

That's my phantasy star story.

>the eternal grind for the Red ring and constant bickering whether you have to fight Dark Falz through missions or through the boss rush in the reception desk

Sometimes your dad loses his nice paying job and you have to cut the internet out of your budget.

I'm a bit of an oddity in that my first exposure to the series was the classic games at a time where PSO/PSU had long became the face of the series, I didn't even know about PSO/PSU until after we moved to a place where we could afford constant internet. I didn't have internet for a good while and was even lucky to have cable tv every once in a while, but hearing everyones fond memories from their PSO days always leaves me wishing that I was able to experience the game during its absolute peak. It's not the same trying to play it now.

>that slight cameltoe

I wish they'd port PSO part 3 somewhere else, I have this on GC but I missed all online content.

Enjoy it since that's one of the most lewd things you'll ever find of her.

>was that Algo would have an overbreeding problem wth Numans.

A very believable problem.

Attached: rikasurprise.jpg (300x267, 22K)

Any of you guys still play PSO? I've only beat Episode 1 but it was fucking incredible. I legit think that final boss fight, the build up to the final dungeon, and all the presentation is one of my favorite moments in a game. And then you fight him again on hard mode for the true final stage and it's just amazing. Looking forward to getting back online with it once I have more free time.

If you want to play PSU now, Clementine is great.

When Phantasy Star Online had come out, I saw a multiple page retrospect of the original quadrilogy in a Dreamcast magazine. I had never played an RPG before, only platforming and racing games. Seeing screenshots of battles, yet also over worlds and faux 3D dungeons made me very confused as to just what kind of games they were and what you did in them. I didn't get to play an RPG until the GBA remake of Final Fantasy V in 2004.

Found it again just to make sure. To think that Rika would be their many greats grandmother too.

Attached: D1_IcyCWsAARB8N.png (745x254, 300K)

Yeah. We'd talk about shit I was too afraid to speak about with my irl friends. Newgrounds was still big around then too and I got Flash lol piracy and started trying to have my online buddies do voices/music but all of our shit got blammed. Man, memory lane.

I played a bit of it the other day. But I only ever beat it on Normal, never on hard. I should try hard once. Unfortunately I'm a feeble and frail little FOnewearl and will die very quickly so I have little faith in surviving Hard Mode Dark Falz.

>Phantasy Star thread created 6 hours ago still up
Impressive.

I have a Dreamcast, no broadband modem though, have no clue as to how I would even begin to play the game online honestly.

Attempting to balance things while Clementine still isn‘t in a final/finished state doesn‘t sound power mad to me, but whatever.

I was surprised to even see one in regular Yea Forums at all. It's one of the only game series' I have knowledge on so it's fun to talk about it.

Attached: darkforce1.gif (320x119, 8K)

i hate every single motherfucker that wanted PSO2 for the west, the game was already translated into english and ready to play requiring zero effort on the user side. but because people whined so much there now exists a slight possibility that hundreds of thousands of accounts are going to be forcibly exiled from the JP version and forced to start all over in the english version.

I get where you're coming from, but I think you should aim some of that anger at Sega. I would have been completely ok with them just saying they couldn't bring it over in the end as opposed constantly being told "It's coming" year after year with no new updates on it at all. I hope that Sega doesn't IP ban every baka gaijin after the eng game goes up but who knows with Sega.

Rika was genetically altered specifically to be as fertile as possible. Probably just holding hands will give her twins.

Are you serious?? I haven't played in like 2 years or so.

The truth hurts but it's included in the official compendium user; though the director/artist for PSIV did say he was surprised they included what he basically said to be his own headcanon into an official source so I guess you wouldn't be wrong.

They include a lot of shit into these compendiums. One shot has Rika wearing pants. If it's not in the game it doesn't count.

the change was recent, they've been replaced by 3 weekly missions that are easier ex: "grind a weapon or unit" or "finish 1 XQ stage". the payout is the same but they're still on a weekly cooldown.

>Tfw they couldn't implement letting Rika change clothes between planets
Maybe one day. And doesn't the outfit Rika wear in the ending include pants?

capris.

Goodnight anons, It was nice talking to you. I hope the rest of the week treats you well.

I can't believe Han get's a cute girl like that. And can kill shit with his brain.

That's the thing, Nova is an offline game. Nothing to keep alive.

>mfw already banned from jp so I have to start over whatever happens
if only I actually live in america, them saying nothing for europe sounds ominous, even if I don't live on either continent

Making drastic changes from PSU gameplay is absolutley power mad.

>Ragol, Agol, Algol, it's all translation differences.
No, it absolutley is not. Ragol is a planet in a different system and in a completly different continuity. They are spelt and pronounced differently in Japanese as well, there is just nothing to support an argument saying they are the same thing translated differently.

Is it worth at all to play the original PSO and hook my Dreamcast to the network and play on fan servers? Would i still be alone :'(

>I also think they came out before PSII, actually.
They did not. They came out around or after PS3, I'm not sure why you'd think they came out first. They can easily be ignored, frankly they're pretty problematic continuity-wise (If one is to accept them as 'canon' then Motavia goes from a barren shithole wasteland into a perfect green paradise in only 6 months, for instance)

>finally release pso2 in the west
>the west is only North America by the way
What were they thinking?

Now you know why that difficulty mode is called ultimate. Its the ultimate grind!

>Would i still be alone
Yes, you would. If you want to play with people you'll have to get with the 90's and play the PC version m8.

>90s
The Dreamcast came out in 99

Look at this fella, doesn't know a humourous phrase when he sees one. Get with the 90's m8.

When do we get PSO Classic like WoW Classic on Steam with working anti-cheat lads?
Oh and an Episode 3 remake with faster turn please.

I would be so happy to play pso with my friends

We've have servers up for ages.

Yes I know, I played on them but it barely manage to have 100 players. And what happened to Schthack could happen again.

If they were to re-release it officially on all platform with crossplay the online would have a healthy amount of players again.

What's happening with Schthack again? A real issue or some drama?

They lost everyone's character years ago and had no backup. Stupid mistake that could have been avoided. Also I think the server wasn't very vanilla anymore but don't quote me on that.
