Is this good game design?

Yes, get good

git gud

I never played this game but I got some questions.

>Can't you affect the enemies with silence?
>How the fuck does thwack work is just a "revenge" spell
>How hard do they lewd the ginger slut I wanna see those tits bounce they look just like my moms

>not focusing down one target first
God, you're retarded.
>using primarily physicals on elementals
Super retarded.

lol should have gotten some kind of ward save against death

What the fuck does any of this matter, if you can't kill the entire horde in one turn you're pretty much fucked

Get good scrub.

>thwack
Chance of instadeath

>silence
The same statuses don't exist in this game. IIRC, there is no "Silence" equivalent.
>Thwack
It's just a Mega Death spell that OP got supremely bad rolls on. I'm unsure if Death-immune items are even available at that point (or if they exist at all).
>ginger slut
Just google it. There are various armors that, if you equip the full set, alter her appearance. Most of them aren't that great, so you'd be gimping her stats by keeping them on. Her default shows the most cleavage anyways.

Yes, you can silence. Status affect spells are actually quite good in this game. I was just off my guard because I hadn't seen these guys cast Thwack yet. If I'd known that was a possibility I would have hit them with a big spell instead of using staves to save MP. I had an anti-thwack accessory on my healer, but I had just used it into craft a weapon. I just thought it made for a funny clip because everyone who's played classic DQ games has had a bad experience with instakill spells before.

>not having Light Arrows on Angelo at this point
>not having Kaboom on Jessica
>not having the one wind spell you get at Level 2 of the Monk tree

Ive played every game in this series and a thwack wipe has happened maybe 3 times total
Its really rare compared to SMT games
And in modern games you get even protection gear and spells to be immune to it

Thwack'd

Arguably yes since there are items to avoid this but I fucking hate it, specially since the first time you find a new enemy it's impossible to tell what their moveset is, meaning there's nothing you can do to prepare yourself. Same shit in FF games.
I think instakill attacks, as in no matter how much health you have you die, are bullshit. A better balance is to just put the player at 1 health, give at the possibility of recovering.

>specially since the first time you find a new enemy it's impossible to tell what their moveset is
When you play enough DQ games is not so bad because monsters are reoccurring and they almost always have the same skills
You know a mimic has thwack or that a rock bomb has kamikazee

I just got the boat while through 8 and I gotta say nothing has ever made me want to kill myself more. It's maybe half the speed of walking, and enemies can't be avoided. Hawk Men kill Jessica in half a second, and trying to zoom makes me fight a shark. Where am I supposed to go next to progress the story so I spend as little time on the shithole overworld as I can?

Still, it's a lot to ask for players to lose potentially hours of progress because of something like this. Why even have these Death attacks affect an entire party. If it only attacks one party member, fuck it, why not. But to attack the entire party is basically a fuck you from the game.

>When you play enough DQ games
8 is my first.

Well I have some good news for you
In DQ you never lose any progress because there is no game over, all that happens after a wipe is you awake at your last save point (a church) and lose half the gold you were carrying (which you can store in the bank to prevent even) all the exp, all the items you found you keep.

>The same statuses don't exist in this game. IIRC, there is no "Silence" equivalent.

Fizzle can keep enemies from casting magic, but I don't think anyone learns it naturally through leveling up and putting points into certain skills can get it.

You never really lose progress when you die in a DQ game. You just respawn at the last church you save at with half your gold. Losing half your money sucks when you're hoarding a lot, but banks exist so that's your fault for holding onto it.

You're told to go to the western continent. That's the big landmass. You can land and the southeastern or the northern edges, but land at the northern part of the map since that's where you need to go first and the enemies are a little easier. If you're having trouble you might need to gear up a bit. If you explore some of the little islands around the map you can get some good gear earlier than you can purchase it.

Turn base. Can be if it offers enough strategy

Dragon Quest? Fuck no. Play a better RPG

I forgot about that, was thinking more of Final Fantasy that also has these sort of attacks. Now those are a fucking bitch. I think I once lost some 5 hours of progress in FFX just because I was mindlessly grinding in some area until one of the the enemies I had killed multiple times before unleashes a multi-death attack.

should have been wearing a ribbon

I didn't know these assholes from DQ2 were in 8

>>How hard do they lewd the ginger slut I wanna see those tits bounce they look just like my moms

You just KNOW

thats kinda cringe
yall know if smash makes dragon quest big in the west they probo wont be doing this shit anymore
fire emblem got toned down more and more over the years

For what it's worth it's meant to be more silly and cheeky rather than "Whoa look at this sexy thing!" Dunno if that distinction matters anymore, which is kind of horrifying.

No.

Fuck death spells.

it doesnt to the ethics department
she will only be able to blow kisses now

Puff-Puff has been a Dragonball/Dragonquest thing since the late 80s.

They won't remove it just because zoomers like you grew up with Fortnite and think everything that doesn't conform to your worldview is cringe.

puff puff has been a thing since forever and has already been on multiple nintendo consoles.

I'd say no in a vacuum because there's really no way to guard against like in something like SMT where you have elemental resistances and items.

Dragon Quest has pretty much no consequence for death though so it dosen't really matter.

I remember the red version of those from rocket slime
hated those things

lmao git gud
Look at the bright side, you only lost your gold.
You can tell by looking that those monsters have a glaring weakness that Jessica can exploit with her magical nukes. Her magic is okay against bosses, but she's really good against mobs.
And you really seriously shouldn't be using normal attacks against high-threat+elemental enemies, spend those MP points, you stingy ass.

>turn-based

some chick got censored in a second rendition of her from xeno blade 2
the zora girl got censored in the re releases of those zelda games.
that stuff doesnt mean anything, it existed now but now we are "better than that"

A couple of costume changes is not the same thing as changing a series meme since its inception.

>We'll just remove chocobos because chickens have become racist

tifa's design was iconic for being sexy and skimpy
a action entirely based on sexiness and tiddies can easily get censored if this new wave shit is influential enough

Good games like Dungeons and Dragons online have all insta-death effects negated by deathward or deathblock, the latter being an effect you can have on your equipment at any level.

Your stupid american puritanism is cringe

I've owned DQVIII since it came out and always planned to play it, but I never did. Is it actually good? I like Persona and Final Fantasy, but they're the only big JRPG series I've touched.

You probably wont like it
Its too highbrow

Yes, keeps metal slime powerlevel kids on their toes.

i agree, dummy

>fire emblem got toned down more and more over the years
What the FUCK are you on, thats the literal opposite of reality

Its not good game design but its not notably bad. Shit like fucking Mem Aleph is dog shit. Haha just make sure you bring a bunch of immune to everything demons or get fucked faggot.

it got more risque when that one 3ds title came out many years ago, but now censorship is pretty common in the series. camille is censored in smash for instance

I have a shit ton of that ginger slut. I don't even like titties but all of her porn is titties.

Its not censorship if its to keep an all ages rating you dumb idiot

>we have to change something to meet the arbitrary standards of a third party
Sounds like censorship to me.

Its very different than doing it for "ethical" reasons

>Fire Emblem got censored
>Uses Smash as an example

Holy fuck, are you daft or something?

Pic related is OFFICIAL Nintendo art

>Smashfag is retarded
Stop replying

>they snuck a DQ reference into MGQ Paradox
neat

It's one of the better JRPGs of that era. The scope of the world and the amount of decent voice acting were impressive for the time, but now it doesn't look that amazing and there's not really anymore on the map to find or do than in a SNES JRPG. It also lacks the character/part customization that some of the other DQ games do.

It's not really all that difficult, but you can't completely let your guard down. For the kind of generic JRPG it is it's pretty top tier and sometimes generic is exactly what you want.
