Nier:Automata can feel more than just lonely. It can make you feel like an insect. Existential kinds of angst abound there.

I get the otherworldly feeling, but why the lonely feeling? Why would one want to experience that?

That looks like UC San Diego dorms. The whole campus looks like that. I think people associate brutalism with totalitarianism.

These are a few that hit the "lonely otherworldly" feeling for me:

Rain World
Hyper Light Drifter
The Talos Principle
F.E.A.R.
Portal
Dark Souls
SOMA
Alien Isolation
Echo
The Solus Project

Play Kairo on steam

it's so lonely, strange, and surreal that it gives off an extremely offputting, almost frightening feeling (although the game is not scary at all, it's a puzzle game)

Time for actually video game screenshots.

Attached: Megadrive_another_world.png (398x250, 5K)

Most people find it anti-comfy.

ECHO

Played it for 20 mins since somebody recommended it to me on Friday, but it felt rather boring.

Axiom Verge

>The Talos Principle
I wish Croteam weren't such lazy fucking slavs and would get to make TLP 2 already...
I mean, even SS 4 takes for fucking ever.

Star Wars Dark Forces is what immesiately comes to mind when I see that title+picture. It fits the atmosphere to a T.

The first two Oddworld games have a great feeling of loneliness. In the first one, you're escaping slavery and it really feels like you're on your own. In the second one you go back to rescue others, and while you get more help at times, there's still this overwhelming feeling of aloneness when you just finish rescuing a bunch of friends and you realize you're the only one left in the area.

Metal Arms Glitch in the System is a third person shooter where all the characters are robots. You get NPC allies that fight with you, but the plot has you traveling deep into treacherous locations alone. It makes your allies feel like a relief to come across. At a certain point, you're stranded in a wasteland with zombiebots and at that point you start to miss the regular enemies because at least they weren't horrifying.

Theres a short single player game called Rime which i heavily recommend. Its a nice place to just wander around and wonder whats happening

Hollow Knight has some good moments when you feel like the only thing alive, really deep underground.

Occupy white walls

If you can look past Phil Fish's massive faggotry (just pirate it) Fez captures that otherworldly nostalgic/saudade feeling extremely well, especially thanks to its music.

That game was so comfy.
Nice puzzles, 10/10 sound design.

Not really a specific game, but I get this feeling from most user created maps in source engine games. Like a lot of the surf maps in Team Fortress 2, I get a weird lonely feeling while playing them. Most maps created for Garry's Mod also have this feeling, especially the earlier ones.

Attached: 113573b.jpg (1680x1110, 233K)

reminds me of those old CS:S pool maps

I know exactly what you mean. I remember downloading a ton of jump maps just to explore them and not even play them (since I sucked and couldnt beat most of them on my own). the feeling of lonely exploration is amazing

You guys should check out Jazztronauts, it's a gmod gamemode that pulls random maps from the workshop and adds a little bit of gamification to exploring them. It starts out a little reddity but once you actually start playing it's really good for that feeling.

It's actually the Salk Institute, close though.

Because architects largely wrote themselves into irrelevance by ignoring the people they built buildings for, so now we have "architects" and construction firms rinsing and reusing "International" style for years because it's inoffensive.

Also, we've forgotten the importance of how public and private spaces write themselves on the minds of their inhabitants. It's no wonder in part why we have complete lack of investment in the spaces we inhabit and the emotional trauma that follows it when we surround ourselves with stuff like this.

Just a warning to people playing on a toaster: The physics are affected by your framerate because the version of the Unreal engine it uses is shit that way. Later sections are impossible without lowering the resolution a lot.

The backrooms was a neat image that got a kinda dumb "story" attached to it. I can't imagine it working at all as a game.

I always feel incredibly lonely in single player Minecraft even when I have stuff to do. Every once in a while after building something and stepping back to look it strikes me that I spent time making something nobody will ever use or see and that I'm all alone. Kind of creeps me out a little, maybe I'm just a bit autistic though.

The myst games were always good for that feeling of lonely adventuring.

Obduction was good IMO and it's by the people that made myst, so there's that.
It's also VR compatible, if that's something you actually care about.... which for a game like this might actually be pretty immersive.

Have they added enough content to make it worth while?

Not enough, but there is finally some content.

Even the official maps have an air of loneliness to them. Maybe its the way you're used to constant action and excitement and heavy population that when you go back, alone, it just feels wrong. I also think it helps that they have plenty of ambient noise like buzzing lights, active machinery, lapping water, etc. that makes it feel more "alive", and as a result, more unusual that you're the only one there

Reminds me of ignis solus:

Anyone that plays Planetside 2 knows how lonely and weird being in a base with no battle raging outside is. Other than the occasional aircraft coming down to resupply and random people spawnjumping through the base there's literally nothing going on most of the time. Not sure that was ever in their scope, but being on UE4 I wonder how difficult it'd be to engineer; What the cost and overhead would be.

It's kind of comfy because it's enclosed.

Oh and while Myst is more accessible as something standalone, the later sequel URU is probably the ultimate game for OP's request.

It's a massive game world designed as an MMO, but it failed before ever really taking off.
An absolutely massive chunk of content but only a tiny fraction of what was envisioned for the game.

I used to restore lost beta maps from Half-Life 2 and I weirdly get what you mean, especially because the maps could only run on a beta version of the game with all sorts of weird leftovers from GoldSrc (HL1 flashlight, HL1 blood particles) so the engine was kind of in a weird limbo where it was not quite HL2 but not HL1 either. Restoring old content that was lost in the sands of time was an experience that definitely felt very desolate, solitary and sometimes unnerving but still fun.

There's like 2 or 3 actual platforming sections, 2 or 3 puzzles, but it's mostly a linear walking simulator. It's also only 2 hours long. The atmosphere was nice but thats about it. The protagonist is a wordy british woman with extremely bland banter. Your companion is a precursor AI that downloaded itself into your brain (don't ask, it just works), and is a snarky piece of shit. You constantly talk with someone aboard a ship you can see above you when you look up. You're not alone, you're in no real threat compared to the original (so far), and there's not as much sense of wonder this time around. It's an attempt at making it bigger and better when it's sucking out everything that made the first one good.

Also, your character isn't a guy with black and blue toothpaste hair with a cone-shaped cast shadow anymore. It's shit no matter what.

Wrong. Born in 99 fag I know about it

i-is that a camera?

Original Neir is better for tone and emotion. Gameplay is much worse though

Yeah. There's realMyst which is a full 3D version of the game, but the original version of it released in 2000 is no longer for sale, and the remaster that supersedes it is a crappy hack job built off of a mobile port of realMyst 2000.

It's crappy because the quality is inconsistent and all over the place. Two graphical overhauls and many glitches still remain, poor optimization, and it's a mix of assets new and old, some higher quality in fidelity, others from Y2K are low poly, low quality, and it diverges from the art style of the 1993 version, but it's supposed to be the "definitive" version of Myst.
Pretty sad.

There wasn't much to miss out on.
URU was designed to be an MMO with a story that would progress and evolve with players in real time, but it was too ambitious and difficulties with funding left it stillborn for a while, and by the time they finally launched it on Gametap years later, it was way too late.

They got as far as their first season, and then it shut down.
What they have in URU represents a tiny fraction of the plans they had for it. They had to salvage their season 2 content and put it out as Myst 5 (just some of URU's season 2).

The magic is that the game as a product turned out as dead as the world it describes. Everything they have in their story about failing to revive a dead city exactly describes Cyan's struggle with URU's development and failed launch.

There's an online and offline version of the game that have slight differences. The online version is updated and free, and offline URU has a different progression and story.
If you get offline URU, get the mod loader called Drizzle that'll let you patch the game with mods and fixes.

>It's also VR compatible, if that's something you actually care about.... which for a game like this might actually be pretty immersive.
It looks fucking fantastic in it but you really need a beefy GPU for it.

Ok, so, I've been really worried about the prospect of a MYST television series and have tried to get involved in the process using techniques that obviously relate to Fuge in the Void and The Back Rooms, except IRL, you know get fucked up and go.

But seeing all these decompression and dissasemblies of sanity made in purpose by meat bodies or at least review by one adequately simulated meat body...

Look, what I am saying is that this thread makes a bad MYST television series a good thing. Because at least it will poop some hallmark family friendly schmaltz into this scab scratching circle jerk.

Because now we know what the wallpaper looks like when you simulate being stuck up ones own arse.

So I'm not the only person who looks at pictures/drawings of places in order to bring back that strange feeling of being inside a dream.

You can find some nice maps in VRChat if you can sort them out of the piles of dogshit. The few autists that make the good ones keep unlisting them every other week and swapping to alt accounts though so it's hard to keep track of them unless you know them personally.

>but it turned out to be the same shit copypasted over and over
This is what procgen inherently is. Same with no man's sky. You just fundamentally do not like that sort of game.

Another movie studio name has been attached to a MYST television series. The last Power Pyramid to care touch that has Harvey Weinstein at the top. It was Matt Tolmach and Evan Dougherty and a couple of studios vaguely tied to Miramax but Legendary was fronting it to Hulu. Legendary even created Asylum Entertainment but it didn't go anywhere.
Now we have another chance. Backrooms, multiplied by Dune, Divided by Mario 64, and a touch of Alice in Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland. Imagine if you found the door to The Back Rooms of Victorian Era Egnaldn and instead of stepping through yourself you pick up a pauper girl, get her stoned, tie a strong to her waist and send her in instead.

Alice in Wonderland.

Old 90s Internet, surreal videogames, old source maps... Probably a different timeline. That feeling you get when you look at them and play them is you peeking into a different timeline.
