Why was it not a commercial success?
Levi Wright
Kayden Robinson
Really? Awesome, this game might be fine but the fact that it cuts off any chance of there ever being a continuation of the original Prey makes me never want to buy it.
Julian Gonzalez
Shit marketing
Cooper Adams
Didn't even hear about it until it was out. So that's probably why.
Carter Parker
No marketing. Bethesda is deliberately trying to kill Arkane.
Nolan Jenkins
uncashable genre
Jeremiah Jones
It didn't do well at launch but do we know how well it sold afterwards? Might have had decent word of mouth.
In any case Bethesda's marketing was awful. Calling it "Prey" made it seem like a reboot when it had nothing in common with the original Prey. It was just cynical brand exploitation. The initial trailers also did a poor job of explaining what the game was about.
>okay the dude's eye is bloodshot and there's black goop, so what? is this some kind of linear cinematic experience?
Matthew Reed
Bethesda seems like a really petty company, considering how they screwed over Obsidian.
Ethan Rivera
you are missing out on a good game
not playing it out of spite just because HURR DURR M-MUH ORIGINAL PREY NOSTALGIA
Xavier Smith
>stole the ip of a well loved fps
>original had a really unique setting and the potential for a sequel was huge
>sequel announced, was supposed to be a open world alien bounty hunting game
>scrapped and instead got bastardized it into generic fps #5541
It would have NEVER been a success.
Nathaniel Johnson
They forgot to make a good game.
Joseph Jenkins
Bad marketing and the name. If they would have named it Typhon of Psychoshock it would have sold better.
Brody Reed
Shitty twist
Aiden Campbell
you're a complete retard, Prey is an immersive sim
Jace Thompson
if not really an fps
yes it is in first person but its more of an adventure sci-fi game
there are multiple choices and ways to overcome obstacles than just going in guns blazing and gunning down everything
Joseph Johnson
same reason why dishonored 2 was a flop
all the dev does is talk about feminism and social justice all the time.
the only thing i knew about this game before release was that it featured lesbians.
Luis Walker
Immersive sims always sell like shit
>Thief
>System Shock
>Prey
Did DX sell well in its time? Don't remember. It's a miracle any devs make them at all desu, but I'm glad that each and every one was created
Tyler Miller
Awful marketing, they made it look like a linear horror shooter. Also it was stupid to call it Prey, it made a lot of dumb people boycott it for stupid reasons.
Immersive Sims are rarely commercial successes though, they become cult classics with time.
Joshua Ross
Did anybody even care about the original Prey? Nobody ever talks about it.
Evan Rodriguez
This game has a god tier soundtrack.
youtube.com
youtube.com
youtube.com
youtube.com
Jack Kelly
Not even nostalgia, I played the original Prey pretty recently and loved it, one of my favorite FPS games ever. I've heard the reboot is a System Shock clone and that sounds bad.
Wyatt Cooper
it was mediocre
Brandon Bell
>generic fps #5541
That's original Prey
Kayden Anderson
Because it's a shit game so it has no appeal to people normally interested in this genre. And it doesn't even have anything that could make normies like it either, like how Bioshock at least had its stylish setting and a really cool recurring boss, or how the new Deus Ex games have a charismatic protagonist, great music and distinctive art style. Prey has nothing. It's a dumpster fire of a game.
Aiden Price
There, great example of the result of shitty marketing + dumb people
Benjamin Cook
>Immersive sims always sell like shit
Gonna remind you that the Metro franchise exists. Literally powered by slav magic.
Chase Nguyen
>generic fps #5541
Prey 2017 isn't even an fps. Its a fucking immersive sim. OG Prey was the generic fps and you would have gotten even more generic fps bullshittery with prey 2.
Jack Wright
Marketing was pretty weak, was advertised way too hard on the sci-fi horror angle, and is a genre that isn't really popular right now.
It had nothing to do with the original Prey not getting a sequel. If Prey 2 was going to be made then it would have. Correlation does not equal causation.
Nathan Richardson
Would have benefitted from not being called Prey, it's a good game, but it has fuck all to do with Prey.
Nathaniel Cooper
Fun fact, Prey had portals before valve released Portal 1.
I also have yet to see a single fps released in the last 12 years that lets you walk on walls, there is titanfall and that CoD but that is just walljumping.
Camden Perry
They literally didn't have to call it Prey.
Tyler Richardson
Oh wow, walking on walls. What an innovative game mechanic. You know why nobody else has done it? Because it adds literally fucking nothing.
Isaac Gonzalez
Because immersive sim is a niche genre
Nolan Brooks
It literally doesn’t change or mean anything about the game. And I’m assuming that was a choice out of the developers hands.
Blake Rivera
Portal's mechanics were based on the indie game Narbacular Drop, that was released 1 year before Prey
Elijah Butler
>Correlation does not equal causation.
Is this the latest phrase that mouthbreathers trot out when they want to look smart, but have no idea what it actually means or how to apply it to situations?
No need to answer, that question is obviously rhetorical.
Daniel Thomas
>Game is about superpredators coming to empathize with their prey through living the life of one
>Prey is a bad name because some completely unrelated property used it a decade before
No one property has some moral right to a monosyllabic 4-letter word. By that logic the 2006 game shouldn't have used the name because it wasn't a vidya adaptation of the 2002 novel.
Levi Martin
Sucks for them, I'm still not playing the game.
Eli Parker
That’s nice and all, but he’s still right. Prey 2 was shitcanned on its own merits, not so they could give the name to a different game.
Wyatt Carter
>Portal's mechanics were based on the indie game Narbacular Drop, that was released 1 year before Prey
Why am I not surprised that actual underage children are posting on Yea Forums
Go play quake and maybe in 7 years when you turn 18 you will be allowed to post on Yea Forums
Kayden Anderson
The problem was that Zenimax owns the rights to the original Prey, so they just used the franchise name as a way to get sales
Thomas Cox
user, people born in 2001 can post here. People that can't remember 9/11 can post here and have been for a while.
Nathaniel Nguyen
...okay? Do you think it matters to me? It’s not a perfect game by any means, but I liked it. I think it’s just a shame there’s all this hullabaloo over a name, when it doesn’t affect anything at the end of the day. Prey 2 was axed for reasons that had nothing to do with the game. That’s what I’m trying to communicate.
Luke Robinson
Yes, i know games had portals before, but i was saying that portal didn't take the idea from Prey.
Joshua Bailey
Metro isn't an immersive sim. Immersive sims are referring to the gameplay, not the atmosphere.
Metro 1 and 2 were mostly linear shooters. Exodus adds a few open world playgrounds. That doesn't make it an immersive sim.
Immersive sim means "I have a goal, and a bunch of tools to achieve it. The game is designed to accept most solutions I can devise for the goal. I'm going to come up with a solution, implement it, adapt to any unforseen issues and triumph.
Bioshock 1 and 2, as well as Crysis are closer to Immersive Sims in their gameplay compared to Metro, which is mostly a balanced stealth/action shooter.
Ayden Parker
Yeah. And a hooker is an escort.
Call it what you want, you still found it on the street.
Robert Hall
>an fps isnt an fps
Hudson Morgan
Shit marketing. It's a really gold immersive sim, but the marketing made it look like a boring scifi horror shooter. Also the name, caused a small group of absolute autists to vehemently defend one of the shittiest shooters of the mid 2000s and boycott this game, even though literally everyone who wasnt 12 at the time of OG Preys release knew it was complete shit. Anyone defending it is literally just being an edgy hipster contrarian faggot, OG prey was trash and the new prey shits on it in every single way.
Justin Sullivan
Metro is a shitty boring corridor shooter, not an immersive sim. The fact that you would in any way conflate the two means you're clearly a fucking idiot
Jaxon Peterson
Does this have the cool portals, magnetic walkway upside down battles and loads of assholes as doors?
William Smith
I'm still not buying it.
Mason Flores
No, its actually good.
Anthony Price
Sure, they could have called it anything. But saying that a sequel to the 2006 game isn't happening BECAUSE this one happened is absurd.
I'm going to answer anyway because I used it properly and I'm sick of this stupid argument about disliking Prey 2017 because of some childish belief that it had anything to do with Prey 2006's sequel being cancelled.
Correlation is when two things happen that have some relationship to each other. Literally "co-related".
Causation is when one event is the cause of the other.
All causation is correlation, but not all correlation is causation.
Prey 2 doesn't happen.
Prey (2017) happens.
The two have a relationship by their name and thusly are correlated.
But to say that B caused A requires proof and that evidence does not exist.
Ayden Lopez
It wasn't? For some reason I though it was few of successful modern story driven single player fps left. Guess story driven fps is dying genre. Makes me sad.
William Parker
well clearly I'm a fucking idiot because immersive sim is the most pretentious thing I've ever heard of
Josiah Bell
Nobody cares about the stupid gimmicks that game tried to use, it was still a boring as fuck shitty game. Theres a reason no one gave a shit about it then and no one gives a fuck about it now, there are no redeemable factors to that game other than it sharing a name with an infinitely better reboot
Jack Nguyen
I don't think Zenimax actually owns the rights to the original Prey. 2K has that. In regards to the IP in general I don't think Zenimax has that either. What Zenimax purchased was the trademark Prey which, on it's own, doesn't really mean much apart from being able to call your game "Prey" while nobody else is.
Parker Sanders
It's true though. Prey had a ton of potential for a sequel, I believe they could've made one eventually if not for this game.
Jayden Stewart
>Prey 2006
>well-loved
It was a resounding "meh" game.
Justin Moore
Again, not asking you to, just trying to clarify this game didn’t kill Prey 2. You don’t have to buy it, I’m definitely not Todd Howard, and I definitely wouldn’t tell you that you can get it for a great price off the Steam store.
Jeremiah Turner
Must suck to know that an indie game btfo the original prey portals.
Jaxon Allen
You clearly are a fucking idiot. Atleast you admit it. You fucking retard. You should honestly consider hanging yourself you are so fucking stupid. Dumb fuck. Go play your spooky corridor shitty Russian faggot simulator. Söiboy
Austin Baker
Considering buying this while it’s still on sale. Is it as good as everyone says it is? See it routinely called “GOTY 2017”
Mason Kelly
Its extremely good. Its a very atmospheric game with a god tier soundtrack and art direction.
Charles Martinez
The best games never really are.
Brayden Miller
Waah stop liking what I don't like.
Leo Johnson
Its a solid 9/10 for me.
Logan Morgan
>ton of potential
Nobody bought, or cared about, Prey. It was a 6 out of 10 at best, at the time it was one of the absolute most boring games on the shelf. I'd say take your nostalgia goggles off but clearly you're just fucking stupid because it wasnt good at the time, and it sure as hell isnt good now
Julian Harris
The enemy variety and combat is trash, people just give it bonus points because arkane doesn't know how to balance games making it babbies first sequence break or babbies first alternative route sim
Noah Hughes
If you liked old FPS-RPGs like Arx Fatalis, Ultima Underworld, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, etc, this is basically a modern version of those.
Same devs as Dark Messiah and Dishonored, which is how some of its movement controls are.
Jaxon Edwards
You mean JEWNIMAX
Bethesda themselves are fine, it is Jewnimax who decide who to pay and who to screw over, they have real conmen in their executive board.
Gavin Barnes
>missing the point this hard
Keep showing us just how retarded you are. Keep going we all love to see a fucking mongoloid slap his flipper hands against the keyboard and try to articulate its wrong opinion. Retard
Aiden Torres
Yes it is, and the DLC Mooncrash is likewise incredible. Some of the most satisfying gaming I had last year.
Best thing about the game is just deciding to ignore the story (protip: TURN OFF OBJECTIVE MARKERS) and get lost in a random direction of the space station for a couple of hours.
Isaiah Young
And nobody cared about Prey(2017) real nice name for a game by the way
What is your point
Parker Jenkins
>>stole the ip of a well loved fps
Absolutely no one remembers the original Prey.
>scrapped and instead got bastardized it into generic fps #5541
At worst it is a system shock clone you dolt.
Jaxson Howard
New prey was game of the year to plenty of people and publications. Old prey was a shitty ad in game informer. Your taste sucks mate old prey was fucking garbo
Camden Lewis
People are saying marketing and whatever, else but that's only part of the story.
The simple truth is that immersive sims are dying again. Prey, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Dishonored 2, it seems that there's just a lack of interest in them by the masses these days.
Kayden Reyes
Because they had an amazing looking game in the original Prey 2 and scrapped it because Bethesda got jealous they made a good game
James Jenkins
Come one now, making an FPS RPG pretty much guarantees that your game is going to be a cult classic that doesn't originally sell well but builds a strong tightly knit community that serves as a base to make a comeback 15+ years later.
Henry Bell
>I also have yet to see a single fps released in the last 12 years that lets you walk on walls
Alien vs Predator, the 2010 one. I mean, the 1999 game is better and the 2010 one directly copy the mechanism from it, but you asked for a game release in the last 12 years. Prey wasn't the first nor the last to do it.
Colton Garcia
Zenimax is far more Jewish but let's not pretend that Bethesda isn't full of lying fucking shills, Todd.
Jaxson Williams
Prey 2006 is fun and had some cool gimmicks like gravity walkways and portals, but other than that it was pretty much just quake 3 with an annoying talking protag.
Zachary Cook
The finger never aligning with the button is giving me some serious OCD.
William Jackson
Is the story not good?
Nicholas Cox
A lot of folks shitting on the game never even played it and I bet if they gave it a try they'd love it.
Jonathan Ramirez
It's great but the story kinda drops off towards the end
Nathaniel Gutierrez
>I believe they could've made one eventually if not for this game.
So...where is my sequel to BLACK? You nigger.
Nah, m8.
If the reboot had been successful, Arkaine could had have the chance to bring on board the original Prey devs for a sequel a la New Vegas.
Mouth breathing fanboys kill everything, the tragedy is that PREY is a good title, regardless of its name.
Given that no one remembers Prey, it is honestly puzzling why this was not a new IP altogether.
For example, it would be like making another game named BLACK that has nothing to do with the xbox title, just why?
Tyler Collins
i didn't like how poorly it ran and how every enemy was a jump scare.
Aiden Thomas
It is like Soma with Bioshock gameplay.
Pretty fukken good my lad.
Unlike Bioshock there are several possible endings.
Jacob Jones
Yeah hopefully Bethesda realizes how retarded that naming choice was. Game is worth not supporting just for that to be honest.
Jeremiah Williams
Do you have any proof that it didn't sell well? Like... any?
Do you have any proof that it didn't sell well? Like... any?
Gavin Martin
fun game. using prey's name was kind of shitty but whatever. the original sequel looked like straight up reddit bait and im pretty sure none of the shit talkers here even played the game. original was a 6/10 fps with a few neat gimmicks.
Logan Lewis
I literally just finished this game last night and I thought it was great.
The part with the military operators was a bit shit though.
Juan Taylor
How the fuck is every enemy a jump scare
They're big black aliens talking loudly in a grating voice
How could you ever possibly be surprised by them except for being a brain dead scum of the earth retard
Joseph Baker
It's nothing special, the backstory and setting are a lot more interesting in my opinion. It has one of the best intros I've ever seen in a game but the rushed third act and ending could leave a bad taste in your mouth
Parker Young
i mean how they're all shapeshifted as clutter. its pretty much impossible to know where they are since the whole station is a mess so you cant infer that a coffee cup on the ground is an alien.
Logan Brown
Weird how the first results in Google mention Bethesda disappointment with sales figures. Not that I expect a big brain massreplying gigachad such as yourself to try doing that
Christian Sanders
Because it didn't sell very well.
Asher Walker
>every enemy was a jump scare
The only enemy that's conceivably a jumpscare are mimics, and they stop being a jumpscare when you get the psychoscope with the mimic chip.
Jeremiah Torres
>lying fucking shills
They only hype their own titles which is not a crime (Borderline to it though), they also show gameplay that proves that they are clearly exaggerating.
You can "climb" that mountain, except you are not really climbing as there is not an animation for it, you are more likely walking up a step hill very awkwardly but the action is there regardless.
Not saying I do not frown on it but it is hardly the same as not paying obsidian because of some retarded germanfag whose shitty site was put up there in Metacritic for just his New Vegas review, in what has to be the WORST way to settle a bonus.
or suing John Carmack over the right of occulus rift even when Zenimax had no claim to it.
Sebastian Cruz
are you retarded
they wiggle around if you stop and look around and you can get a psychoscope chip that lets you scan for them
all you need to do is stop when entering a new area and take in your surroundings
Jacob Thompson
Where does it say that Bethesda was disappointed?
Nathan Ortiz
0 marketing
Levi Gray
They literally run around you fuckwit. You might actually be retarded. Nobody is this fucking stupid
Jose Bennett
Nathaniel Nelson
System Shock-like gameplay requires more investment than most people are willing to give.
SS and its sequel are aimed at PC gaming enthusiasts so they found a foothold. But nu-Prey didn't fully commit to that niche.
I'm saying all this despite loving the game. The feeling of exploration and progression are excellent and I wish we got more of it.
Noah Flores
Again, where does it say that Bethesda was disappointed? Seems to be talking about analysts not related to Bethesda.
Hunter Clark
Asher Foster
Again, where does it say that Bethesda was disappointed?? Seems to be talking about analysts not related to Bethesda.
Jack Perry
The article the wiki page links as a source is 404'd, but based on context it's pretty clear that Bethesda is the one disappointed by the sales by the comparison to Dishonored 2.
Who else would be disappointed by them to warrant mention in a sales report? Certainly not the fans. The only other possibility is Arkane.
Either way, the point is that the sales were lower than the previous major title by the same studio, which is a valid data point to suggest it did not sell well.
Juan Ross
Yeah the head of the studio behind prey just left because he was tired...prey 2 will never exist because Bethesda is afraid of too much success. It selling less than the worst Wolfenstein is actually a sign of good sales. The game raked in less than 2 million dollars you fucking re. The game flopped in Bethesdas eyes
Caleb Ramirez
>The game raked in less than 2 million dollars
?
Julian Wood
You want to screw the new Prey, one of Arkane's better new titles, because their publisher threw them into a gladiatorial ring with a cult classic game and you don't like they used the name.
Allow me to condense this just to make sure I get it right:
You want good videogames to die because of stupid business?
Easton Taylor
If it wasnt named Prey nobody would ever even have heard of this shitty generic fps or would have known it released.
They fucked over a good IP and fucked over the sequel THAT WAS IN WORKS BEFORE THEY BOUGHT IT OUT and that is not even mentioning how shitty of a game itself was.
It flopped, the studio that worked on it deserved the closure and bankruptcy and hopefully bethesda will follow suit. Get over it.
Brayden Morris
normies and casuals grew out of dudebro games
Leo Gray
>immersive sim
fuck off
Dylan Cox
But they did because the cunts responsible for cancelling the real Prey sequel didn't renew their IP license so Bethesda was able to acquire it. This game was originally supposed to be called Typhon but that word doesn't mean anything. And Neuroshock would have been a too long a name for this current trend of needlessly short AAA game titles. So they got the name Prey because it was available. Short and sweet, and search-engine optimizable.
Kevin Lee
I'm glad it wasn't, that means it didn't get adjusted by hordes of zoomer scum and will become a cult classic in ~5-10 years
We're looking at the next system shock 2/deus ex phenomenon where whenever you mention prey someone reinstalls it
Jace Jenkins
It is. You can keep throwing a tantrum about the term as you want to keep it exclusive to only the games that came out 20 years ago but with Prey it's an accurate term and there's nothing you can do about it. You fuck off and don't come back.
Jason Diaz
You need to be 18 to post on 4channel
Aaron Ortiz
Liam Cooper
It would have been a fucking crime if nobody ever heard of it, it was a good game of a type we simply don't get enough of anymore and you're being a pedantic child about another game not being made.
What would be your most positive outcome out of this? Nu-Prey was never released and Prey 2 continues to be in development hell? Because I'm not exactly seeing a gigantic push to get the Prey 2 you want made (by either the practically defunct 3D Realms or Human Head). The game isn't going to be magically coming out of nowhere.
Your spiteful and undeserved hatred for the game speaks to a serious vendetta over something Arkane likely had no large hand in; but of course fuck developers, fuck publishers, fuck first-person-shooters with heavy physics and RPG elements ('immersive sims' apparently) and fuck videogames. We never got the real Mario Brothers II as a standalone release and I continue to be upset to this day (unironically).
Justin Ramirez
Prey has a larger amount of systems to manipulate to your advantage than System Shock 2. It's objectively more of an immersive sim than that game. Since you didn't know that, I have to assume that your accusation of insufficient age was projection.
Bentley Allen
>stole the ip of a well loved fps.
Ha haha ha what? Prey seriously
Luke Morris
It was ambitious of Arkane to to put enough corpses on the station with names in order to ground the setting and make use of the security booths, but it really hurt both quests and audio log subplots having so many of these people have the exact same faces and voices. Very little of it stands out compared to the subplots of other games like Prey, like the 'chef' and the abandoned game of tabletop Arx Fatalis.
Adam Rivera
Changing genre mid series is bound to cause issues. Most people looking forward to a new prey wanted a new fps, and probably lost interest when they heard it was an immersive sim.
Meanwhile people who would normally buy immersive sims probably didn't hear about it or automatically dismissed it assuming it would be a shooter.
Jonathan Parker
I've played the game for hours now and I haven't seen duplicate faces because almost everyone is face down dead on the floor.
Michael Myers
>Meanwhile people who would normally buy immersive sims probably didn't hear about it or automatically dismissed it assuming it would be a shooter.
People who would normally buy immersive sims know what kind of games Arkane makes. They wouldn't just make a generic FPS. So those people knew what kind of game it was going to be and wouldn't dismiss it.
What you're talking about is probably something that happened with Alien: Isolation. People who were unfamiliar with Creative Assembly thought the game would be just as bad as Colonic Marines. People who knew what Creative Assembly was were unconfident that the game could be any good because who the hell expects a goddamn real time strategy developer to suddenly shit out one of the greatest horror games ever made? And the rest of the people who didn't buy the game were the let's play audience who don't play games, just watch some insufferable faggots play them for them.
Adam White
>you are missing out on a good game
This trash plays EXACTLY the same as every other modern AAA western garbage with its stiff controls and "press x to be stuck in a shitty clunky animation you can't get out of". There's zero fucking depth.
Jason Robinson
We can pack it in guys, he didn't play the fucking game.
Cooper Powell
I really don't want to be the guy saying that you're just not intelligent enough for it, but I have to call bullshit on you because I've found tons of emergent improvisational strategy in Prey. It plays very much unlike regular AAA garbage. Dishonored's amount of gameplay depth is trash compared to Prey, and I haven't even used any of the special abilities yet because I wanted to see what just the basic game mechanics, physics and engine can do without the aid of that gimmicky shit. And the answer to that is quite a bit.
Luke Young
faggots like this
Ayden Smith
Nice cope.
Ryder Rogers
Yours wasn't too bad yourself chief. In the future I find the 'yikes' to be a more effective option on these long fairways, so long as you don't end up in the cringe.
Play the fucking game.
Michael Carter
>play generic westernshit made for people whose introduction to gaming was an xbox 360
nah
Benjamin Sanchez
Nearly every person with an audio log or anything to directly say to the player also has a render of their face, as if that helps with keeping track of their stories.
Jeremiah Mitchell
Anyone else feel that regardless of how well the game plays, the atmosphere in Prey is trash tier compared to the System Shock games? Or any immersive sim really? Its like someone is rehearsing a play about an alien invasion of a space station in their grandmother's living room.
Cameron Hill
We can't all have your immaculate and infallible taste, videogame-jesus.
Alexander Watson
Its a bad immersive sim also desu. All arcane studios ever does is make light copies of Looking Glass games.
Dominic Davis
>well loved
Come on man nobody gives a shit about the original Prey. It was an okay game but we aren’t talking about Half-Life here.
Jose Allen
Personally speaking, I had no interest in the game until I downloaded the demo. The game is awesome, one of the best this gen, but they didn’t do a good job of explaining why it’s so good.
I wonder why this fails when Bioshock last gen was one of the most successful games.
Liam Perry
co founder and head of Zenimax is literally a jew that got banned from practicing finance for insider trading with Saudis or some shit
Carson Richardson
>bad PR after cancellation of the original
>confusing marketing
>advertised as a horror game yet is an rpg
>game itself was slightly above mediocre in many areas
>bait and switch intro to the game
>very bad writing, standard at Arkane
Lots of problem that piled up.
Biggest being the name and marketing surrounding it.
Xavier Walker
Because it’s just an okay game from a genre with some of the most critically acclaimed games of all time to it’s name.
Lincoln Sullivan
it feels like a kid in daddy's shoes
trying his best to copy the rolemodel but you can tell it's just play pretend
Liam Parker
Having a bunch of people running around the station totally killed the atmosphere for me too
Ian Bell
>bait and switch intro to the game
I don't remember this. What's it all about?
Chase Perry
It’s really good for the first few hours, but it rapidly goes downhill after that. The same-y enemies, half-baked mechanics, boring combat, and some truly awful areas of the station make the game a slog. It peaks either in the arboretum or during your first space jaunt. It really shits the bed after what’s his face starts trying to kill you.
Ian Reyes
You sure as hell can't have absolute bottom of the barrel tier taste as well, but it seems like that's just a step above you, so go play your generic AAA western trash, will you.
William Butler
That whole room and mirror level that is absolutely pointless and never referenced again.
Yet the reveal trailer and entire marketing campaign was based on it, made it seem like a horror walking simulator.
It left everybody confused as fuck when the gameplay of the rest came out pre release, especially the press that was only showed that one section at e3 and press event.
Jacob Nelson
The enemies are same-y but only because of the visuals. Prey has the same issue as Resident Evil 7. Sure, there are enemies that behave differently and need different tactics, but everything is just black goo. Compare either game to System Shock 2 which has wormbrain zombies, telepath monkeys, cybernetic nurses, loading robots etc. Different shapes, sizes, colors and sounds.
Caleb Moore
The problem is there’s not really any variety. The game gives you a bunch of options for combat, but the encounters all end up the same. You one shot or two shot them with an OP ability. Aside from a couple of machine enemies, there’s not much variety in the enemy AI.
Juan Young
How many enemies even are there in Prey? 5? A few of them have neat gimmicks, but they get old real fuckin fast.
Lincoln Sanders
normies are niggers
Christian King
>he gets his opinion from neckbeards on YouTube
Julian Cook
Let's see. There's mimics, super mimics, phantoms, poison phantoms, fire phantoms, telepaths, technopaths, cystoids, poltergeists and corrupted operators. That's not a horrible enemy roster. The problem really isn't their functional distinction but the fact that almost everything is a slight variant of the same black blob. Imagine how boring Doom would be if every demon was actually just pink and with yellow eyes.
Carson Perez
I’d strongly disagree with putting mimics/super mimics and the various phantoms as different enemies
Cooper Russell
You are straight making shit up or retarded. No one never ever considered Prey as one of the best ever. Never. It was painfully mediocre then and so it is now. First hour of neat ideas doesnt change anything
Brody Young
Are shotgunners different from zombiemen, are spectres different from pinky demons and are hell barons different from hell knights? I suppose you might have a point with the super mimicks since it's literally just a more aggressive mimic with more health, but the different phantoms have very different behavior in my experience. If they didn't have such a similar character model you couldn't tell that they're based on the same enemy. They do completely different things.
Juan Torres
>advertised as a horror game yet is an rpg
I love how people will consider any game that has some pointless skill tree an RPG nowadays.
Isaac Campbell
Maybe it’s been too long, but I recall all variations of mimics and phantoms doing the same exact thing with very slight differences.
Liam Thomas
>quests
>inventory management
>skill progression
>semi open world environment
>not rpg
What?
ts more of an rpg than the linear jrpg crap people always name as great rpgs of past like old FF games.
Grayson Morris
>Unlike Bioshock there are several possible endings.
This has to be b8.
Nathaniel Cox
Nah; they don't use the same moves (They have a common moveset, but it only ever comes out if you break their AI somehow.)
Justin Bailey
What? You mean that a game where you play a character who's name you can't choose who has a specific job position that is decided for you and there's no way to avoid the main quest is not a role playing game? It has skill trees, man. Skill trees!
Ayden Hughes
>quests
>inventory management
>skill progression
>semi open world environment
I'm pretty sure that's called a metroidvania
Connor Brooks
Maybe blasting everything to death with a shotgun takes away some of the nuance
Dominic Perez
Shitty bio shock ripoff when we could have been boba fett
Fuck Bethesda
Tyler Brooks
>metroidvania
>quests
What?
Samuel Bennett
There aren’t any skill trees in that genre either, user is just reaching. Arkane fanboy threads are generally devoid of logic
Cooper Torres
I think the only way to make a shitty Bioshock ripoff would be to make Bioshock Infinite. You can only go so much lower.
James Howard
Skill progression you blind moron. Metroidvanias give you access to more mechanics as you proceed and often you don't just get them, you have to go and find them. And how do you get from a random genre semantic argument to accusations of fanboyism? I think that might be telling more about you than it does about anyone else.
Correct me if I'm wrong but there is a point to metroidvanias usually. A mission of some sort? And optional side areas aren't just pointless level geometry but there is a purpose for them too?
Bentley Collins
I really liked the weapons, how each one was organic and had an alt fire, it was fun to shoot enemies, and the level design was interesting throughout the whole game. Loved the portal and gravity switching mechanics and how the ending was such an awesome climb to the top.
I played through the whole thing in one sitting which is very rare for a game to hook me like that.
Leo Reed
>Correct me if I'm wrong but there is a point to metroidvanias usually. A mission of some sort? And optional side areas aren't just pointless level geometry but there is a purpose for them too?
Depends on the game, most are just about collecting items and powers and usually have no real story.
For sure you cant accuse them on having quests and open narratives, they usually dont even have NPCs.
Aiden Stewart
They just called it Prey because their trademark was running out and they needed to use it for something
Caleb Jenkins
two is several
Leo Myers
So it's basically like Quake 2. id didn't have any idea what to call the game but they did already have an existing IP so they called it Quake 2 despite the fact that it has nothing to do with Quake.
Colton James
>Infinite
What they made a great porn game
Robert Robinson
As far as I'm aware, it was originally going to be called Typhon. Don't remember where I read that
Bentley Baker
>I really liked the weapons, how each one was organic and had an alt fire, it was fun to shoot enemies, and the level design was interesting throughout the whole game. Loved the portal and gravity switching mechanics and how the ending was such an awesome climb to the top.
Funny i thought Weapons were fucking shit.
Glue gun was great to use outside of combat but absolutely useless to fight with and just asking to die.
Crossbow was a joke weapon.
Wrench was a no go against any harder enemies.
Stun gun worked only against robots.
And the energy weapon was a hidden secret and just awful.
So whole game you were stuck to shotgun and pistol. Both very generic weapons with no utility outside of shooting shit.
And with how enemies have different types of weaknesses and strengths it makes 0 fucking sense that shotgun and pistil dont have different elemental ammo types.
Jose Campbell
Oh, I see what he meant then. Yeah, that's reasonable. There's more flexibility in Prey's endings.
Although technically BioShock has three. There's two variations of the evil ending depending on whether you killed every single Little Sister or just some of them. Tenenbaum's narration is different.
Julian Sanders
Personally I used all my weapons and was utilizing all ammo types. Maybe you just weren't creative enough to realize their utility. I don't really believe you though because if you stick to just shotgun and pistol you'll run out of ammo very fast. The ammo cap is pretty low in that game.
Bentley Foster
>you'll run out of ammo very fast. The ammo cap is pretty low in that game.
Are we talking about the same game? Prey has recyclers and fabricators so you'll have ammo as long as you have trash.
Luis Smith
So what happens if the Typhon ever found the Sphere?
Ryan Davis
Not that guy but I hated those fucking flying assholes they put in the z g zones because only the energy gun could reliably kill then and if you didn’t get it you’d be fucked
Landon Walker
Lol this is the perfect example of the stupid name, I'm talking about Prey 2006.
Luis Harris
How can you call this generic? You don't see shit like this very often. Haver you even played the game?
Logan Green
>Personally I used all my weapons and was utilizing all ammo types. Maybe you just weren't creative enough to realize their utility. I don't really believe you though because if you stick to just shotgun and pistol you'll run out of ammo very fast. The ammo cap is pretty low in that game.
Ye, i was low on ammo, but thats whats the fucking printer for. I alos just skipped hard enemeis i didnt have to kill as they were bullet sponges, at lest on higher difficulty levels.
Also how the fuck you used the crosbow and glue gun in combat? Unless you played on easy. The enemies are absolutely brutal and will fucking wreck you if you fuck around, there is no place for fucking around with meme weapons.
Elijah Foster
If you reread the original post you were replying to I've been talking about Prey 2006 this whole time.
Nicholas Jones
pretty clear that he didnt play it
gloo gun and stun gun both combo with other weapons and help save ammo. not sure what the whole "stun gun only works on robots" nonsense was.
game shouldn't have included psychoshock, makes it way too easy after you unlock it.
David Miller
Xbow was to open doors
Glue gun was to stun then headshot or platform
WHICH FUCKED SUCKED BECAUSE OF THE GODDAMN HIT BOXES
Lucas Smith
it wasnt fun to play
Justin Cook
Oh I was confused because someone listed a bunch of weapons that are in Prey 2017 exactly as described but apparently they're in 06 as well.
Thomas Watson
nah man its a frequently ignored classic. it had good atmosphere and fun gameplay. sorry your pitchfork-tier taste prevents you from seeing it though
Jacob Myers
>stole the ip of a well loved fps
this game was ass man. i didn't even bother to finish it on release.
Nicholas Thompson
>Bioshock Infinite sucks! There's nothing worse than it!
... huh...
Chase Cook
I really don't understand how it got the high praise it did when it stripped back the already stripped back formula of Bioshock.
Jonathan Walker
That's why. It's accessible for retards. Why do you think Marvel movies are so popular?
Daniel Mitchell
How many times were you dropped as a child?
Hunter Hill
Probably by being fun and imaginitive and being generally well-produced.
Chase Long
No game with the Ghost mum boss fight is "well produced"
Jeremiah Morales
For "some reason" journos kept sucking it off, and said how genius it was and on and on and on.
I can see that some casual that forms his opinion on kotaku articles would consider this a gaming masterpiece.
Zachary Reed
Im more confused by the praise for the story when the story makes 0 sense and directly contradicts itself.
The ending is the pinnacle of hack nonsense writing where it dumps bunch of buzzwords, has you time travel and then has you kill the wrong person yet still menages to solve things?
I mean we play as the other timeline "good" booker, how does killing us, the good booker from the future kill the bad booker? It makes no sense.
Carson Jackson
I liked that fight. It was awesome.
Gavin Allen
The real question is why was this game so fucking good? It's Bioshock 1&2, but in space with Deus Ex bits too
Eli Reyes
That cope is a stretch and a half right there.
Kevin Davis
Not to mention the ending only makes any lick of sense if there is infinite elizabeth's drowning infinite bookers, meaning that Elizabeth has now got herself caught in a time loop. Not to mention the "constants and variables" nonsense can fuck right off.
Robert Collins
piss poor marketing and the name
it was a really stupid idea to re-use that name when the game has no connection to the original especially with the shady shit that bethesda was doing to the devs of prey 2
Alexander Nelson
Hey at least it isn't System Shock 2 where the final boss is just a fight against the villain's online avatar face
Jayden Scott
youtu.be
Take me home...
Sebastian Morris
I think it's System Shock except without the atmosphere.
Bentley Rodriguez
Beteshda named it Prey to because they didnt want to loose the right to the name and it was expiring or something.
Hudson Cruz
youtu.be
It's all lost
Joshua Lee
It's very difficult. You have to monitor yourself a lot early game or you will get fucked on. Even on the easier difficulties. Game becomes a lot easier with upgrades. You can literally miss the shotgun/pistol first hour of the game, and be fucked with walking drones, and wrenching shit. It's essentially a modern take on SS2. It's good for what it is. Also you get this neat ghostbusters gun, and it makes the game like a billion time funner than it really is;idk how to explain it;it's definitely a love letter to 80s sci-fi horror.
Lucas Jackson
bioshock should have gone harder with the underwater aesthetic. they could have gone full horror. fuck what could have been is alas not.
Josiah Fisher
>Not to mention the ending only makes any lick of sense if there is infinite elizabeth's drowning infinite bookers, meaning that Elizabeth has now got herself caught in a time loop. Not to mention the "constants and variables" nonsense can fuck right off.
There problem is that there isnt enough of Elizabeths for all Bookers.
If only half of Bookers had a kid, and killing each pre babtism Booker kills that Elizabeth too then it means that half the bookers survive, the bad half.
So all she does is kill all the Good Bookers that are her fathers.
It makes no sense.
Brandon Campbell
Prey was pretty stupid when you look at it now.
New prey looks interesting.
Jeremiah Nelson
Because RPG/Scifi/Horror is too advanced a taste for the majority of gamers.
Aaron Bennett
Stun gun and wrench everything, throw black hole bombs at the nightmares until they burst into treats, hack and reinforce turrets all day long with stupid amounts of resources EZ EZ EZ. youtube.com
