Knowing someone's age and time zone gives you a good idea at how much/when they are going to be playing which is kind of important for any kind of team/guild based content. It also gives you a vague idea at how much maturity you can expect from them. You may find this hard to believe but nobody wants to rely on some 17 year old kid who might flake off or be punished by their parents or whatever bullshit excuse a kid might have for not logging in. It also is a good indicator for skill range, like literal motor skills, someone might have. While playing vidya with grandpa can be fun, if they suck at pvp then theres a good chance they wont ever get better because of their arthritis or whatever. It's also harder for a guild lead to manage someone much older than themselves because old people dont want to listen to 'kids'. People of different generations also tend to think slightly differently and tolerate different things, if everyone isnt on the same wave length it can result in unnecessary drama.
If you are uncomfortable with telling people your age, just lie. It's not a big deal, just don't be retarded and say you are 13 when you're 30. If you want to hang out with 20 year olds who act like 20 year olds then you say you are 20 even if you are 25. No one really cares, it's just a shortcut to understanding someone's situation and doing a quick check make sure everyone will mesh well together.
