Modern military still use spears as a last resort. Swords not for 100+ years

Spears are for throwing or defense. Sword and shield are for fighting.

>Deflects shitty poke with shield leaving you completely open, stabs you in the ribs with sword
Ez modo

>Modern military still use spears as a last resort.
Right. I forgot about the US Pikemarines and the Spearnaz.

Tell that to the Greeks

Situational weapons are NOT reliable.

FUCK

That's a knife, retard.

>have no friends
>just fucking die because of that
its not fair bros...

sigh

>what are riot police

I like hammers

Sticks are not swords.

Yeah, and a knife isn't a spear. So what? It's the same general

where do you store the extra knifeclips though if you need to load a new knife in the middle of a fight? enemy probably won't be nice enough for you to just be able to take your time manually. doesn't that defeat the point of an automatic rifle?

Attached: 1348150316559.jpg (645x773, 42K)

*farts*

You stab the enemy with hurtful comments until you finish the reload.

A spear is just a knife on a stick

>knife
Blade.

if you tell them they are only shooting at you because you are a religious minority do they need to stop and apologize?

From a completely objective stand point, the best weapon is to not be a manlet and to use a great sword. If you're wearing plate most of the time it's just not gonna fucking matter.

Attached: Grutte Pier's sword.jpg (672x910, 64K)

Knives have blades, bro
A bayonet on a rfile is just a makeshift spear

>bringing dinner ware to a battle
Not gonna make it

For most warriors of most cultures, swords never were the primary weapon of war: they're sidearms you could wear while your primary weapon is some type of polearm (spear, lance, pike, halberd, etc), a bow or a gun. Swords as primary weapons are hardly unheard of (Romans being an obvious example), but that's far from the norm.

A blade at the end of a stick is a spear, and bayonet attached to a gun kinda qualifies.

Based spearposters.

>manlyears next to a shortsword

They should have just had crew operated spears in the old days. Like 3 guys work together to wield a 15-20 foot spear. Nothing could stop them.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

And how did that work out for them?

IT'S A FUCKING POINTY STICK

>saihai

Question: when you attach your bayonet knife to your rifle, does it remain a knife or become a polearm? Discuss

It becomes a rifle with a bayonet.

Trick question, it becomes a spear.

YARI ASHIGARU NI GOZAIMASU

Is a spear not a polearm?

That's a whole lot of meme weapons. Samurai were horse archers and ashigaru were spearmen and foot archers (later, also gunners), yet there's no yumi to be seen.

Nope. But a halberd is a polearm. A spear is a spear.

I found OP, guys.

okay, i chuckled

Tfw mhw iceborne doesn’t add the oils back and sword & shield becomes bottom tier

The only weapon that's been as fun as Gunlance to me is SNS and I've tried out them all.
I really hope the add oils. MHW is my first MH game.

How the fuck did battles actually get completed between two well-armored plate armor forces? Were there actually that many casualties?

>develop a million types of weapons
>they’re only viable because no one knows how to form any sort of reliable armor beyond some awkwardly molded balsa wood

Attached: richard-iii-injuries-140916b.jpg (620x1150, 446K)

The success of the romans was built off of at most 20 different people in history being so vehemently and cosmically autistic that they stunned their enemies into waiting around while they built entire walled towns overnight rather than engage in a straight up fight
Shit cavalry, shit officers, shit armor, decent maneuvers, but the value of a Roman soldier came from his shovel, axe and hammer above all else

30 is clearly a prestige skin

>Kuwa
Is that a motherfucking Battle-Hoe?

The standard foot soldier wasn't decked out in plate. Horses and plate armor were expensive, so knights were usually rich-fag nobles and they comprised the cavalry. In war, it was rare for a knight to be killed, because it was much more financially and diplomatically beneficial to ransom them to the other side.

Casualties wouldn't really amass until one side routed. Until then it'd be lucky stabs between plates, broken bones from especially heavy hits or more likely from falling over and being stepped on. But once a side routs and loses their formation and discipline then they start suffering pretty heavy casualties if the victorious army chooses to inflict them. Of course, artillery was also at some battles, and that could inflict some heavy damage if it was accurate.

spear and shield is objectively superior

That's not a gun.

cat-scratcher

A sword can't jam.

Dying for the right cause is the most human thing you can do. Forget about friendship : knowing that you die by saving everyone is a catharsis of every pain/burden that you bear.

You couldn't be more right. Here's a vid that illustrates the importance of roman fort building. In the battle of Alesia, Caesar built a fort around the enemy force to trap them.

Hell, you can even turn your rifle into a spear, that's how versatile and timeless it is.

You know what the army ACTUALLY uses for melee combat? The fucking gun without the bayonet. As a fucking club.
Because bayonets are fucking retarded and inefficient.

What shitty sword are you using that jams between peoples ribs

If you're wearing full plate a shield is irrelevant.

Ceremonial war fans. Gotta keep cool while commanding the troops.

Imagine a whole field of these niggas shining in the sun.

t.Never used a sword

War fans made to signal certain commands to soldiers like moving somewhere or retreating. They were also specially made war fans used as actual weapons but those looked and functioned more like a mace than actual fans.

dun dun

Looks like a pole with a spike.
I bet it functions as a bad spear and a bad club.

If he can afford full plate he's much more worth alive than dead.

>spine is going sideways
This is why you don't fuck your cousins, kids

>shining in the sun
Was armor actually shiny?

Still btfo knights though.

Like 10 men with these agains one knight without a horse? Sure.

With a charging cavalry equipped with armor only nobility can afford, yes.

High polish used to be laborious (->expensive) to achieve. Munitions grade armor wouldn't have been polished, and high-end armor could also be blued, painted, gilded, etched or decorated in a variety of other ways, and to my understanding high polish, never mind mirror polish, wasn't very popular, although it was a thing.

The funniest thing is that it's true.

What exactly is going on here?

Would be spear or spear+shield, idiot.

Box of friendship and camaraderie.

Shield wall.

Learn how to write actual sentences you fag

Spears and polearms were the primary mainstay weapons of the battlefield (if on foot). Swords were the weapons for personal protection (ie: carrying around).

Attached: 1347283524559.jpg (800x1080, 134K)

In fact it is the opposite, the sword is basically the medieval hand gun, you only use if something goes wrong

No no, you throw the whole gun as a spear once the bullets are empty, then you grab the next gun from your backholster.
>no reaload no problem

Not exactly right even then. It varies dramatically by time period and your role on the battlefield. On horseback a spear was about as good as your first charge because you'd goddamn lose it afterward. The simple height advantage being mounted provided made swords, axes and hammers a natural complement.

neither can a revolver

a real one

Maybe the real friends were the spears we made along the way

>they're fucking arming swords and wielded only in one hand
>bastard swords are longer than the longswords

Attached: 1332986138249.jpg (616x526, 69K)

Longswords and bastard swords are pretty much the same thing. ~90cm blade and with the option to wield them two handed. It's about as long a blade as you can have without it getting in the way all the time. A bigger person can accommodate a bigger sword, so if he's rich enough to order one then that's probably what he'd do.

The main difference is in the grip, which is wayy smaller. But games seem to depict Longswords as little arming swords and bastard swords as fucking greatswords.

Probably has to do with games needing to create enough different swords in both the one and two handed category.

*spear and shield

Not even once.

Something like true.

I like Sword and Shield, just like I like Vanilla porn. It's where I started and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it but after watching porn for more than 20 years now I need more to get off.

by the time good quality plate became relatively common (but was still rare, only affordable by the rich) fire arms were already invented and crossbow-like weapons were in production too. a bolt could penetrate a plate of armor from a relatively safe distance and so could a firearm.

believe it or not, crude weapons such as pikes, stabbing knives and clubs were pretty effective too. smashing a helmet with enough force could cause a deadly concussion. stabbing an armored opponent's joints where it was necessary for the armor to have an opening to permit mobility, was another common move too. pikes afforded enough distance for the attacker to harass a horseman from a relatively safe spot. there were also some weapons which were especially designed to unhorse mounted opponents too, but weren't that common.

of course that doesn't someone in a full suit of plate armor would be an easy target though, far from it. knights were trained in war from an early age and were highly mobile, very robust combatants and would usually be accompanied by their squires and such.

sure armored combatants were not as easy to kill, but they weren't invulnerable either

what about a spear and a shield?

>a bolt could penetrate a plate of armor from a relatively safe distance and so could a firearm
Bullets maybe, but bulletproof plate existed as well. Bolts would have to come from a VERY high powered arbalest.
>Pikes afforded enough distance for the attacker to harrass a horseman from a relatively safe spot
And the horse offers more than enough mobility for the cavalryman to simply ride away when a pikeman is close. Pikemen's role in battle is to protect missile troops against an organized foe, and to stab peasants when they try shit.
Stop spacing like a retard.
