I've said this in other threads but they're basically completely fucked. Blizzards issue is that ever since the beginning their development strategy has been to take other peoples work, iterate on it successfully and market it well. They originally started out doing ports and they ended up (metaphorically) doing ports with MTG etc. Everything in their catalogue basically iterates on something else that already existed, wow, warcraft, starcraft, hearthstone, hots, overwatch.

The fundamental problem is two fold. a) All blizzards major products are at the effective end of their lifespans and they have nothing to replace it with because they have developed nothing new. WoW is on life support, Diablo is completely trashed after D3 and Diablo: Mobile, Hearthstone is drying up and Overwatch doesn't seem to have had the longevity they expected and pushed for, Starcraft and real time strategy games are basically a dead genre.

b) Blizzard is too big and has accrued too many inefficiencies to work well, there is a great anecdote about shade of aran in kharazan if people care to look it up. This is a problem because their whole strategy of ripping off others work doesn't succeed when they're slow and the whole speed of the industry has accelerated. They were talking about Diablo being a Dark Souls rip off allegedly but even if true would've come out way too late, by this point the market is already over saturated for example.

Everyone always forgets these guys are conjoined with Activision now. The Blizzard of old doesn't exist anymore.

Yeah, the developer of the encounter once did a big retrospective about the fight. He talks about how to get the fight developed you had to go through X different parts of the company and get all these different approvals. You had to have lines written, then approved, then recorded etc. Interestingly he talks about how Flame Wreath (i think that's what it was called) was bugged and never behaved how it was intended (which is what lead to the flame wreath song / meme). He wanted to change it but Blizzard basically said it would take a whole patch cycle for the behaviour to be changed and it was too late by that point so it was staying.

As long as it's not rushed. Diablo 4 was already in development, but it was pushed ahead because of the whole Immortal fiasco. Despite all it's flaws in the current iteration, WoW remains at the top position of the western MMO market, there's just no other game that provides a comparable experience with the level of quality Blizzard games provide. They're falling out of touch really fast, but when you're the only one providing the highest level of service it's really easy to keep your audience captive because there's nowhere else to go.

Before you mention rival titles, I can tell you they're all shit in one way or another and people go back to WoW because it plays better, it runs better, and it's not focused on appealing to a niche but rather in giving a suitable experience to anyone who is interested in playing an online rpg.

have you even played FFXIV? it does a fucking great job at alienating new players from liking the game at all, it forces you to slog through the most tedious mandatory main story you've seen in an mmo ever. They're not comparable at all, not to mention the atrocious pvp is also the worst version of pvp in any mmo ever even compared to the gook titles with overpowered cash shop whales feel better than dogshit that is ffxiv pvp.

Except WOW already has been losing players for YEARS. Some estimates put it at less than 10% of its peak. Obviously they can keep the game around - EQ is still getting new content FFS. The question is if it is relevant or doing more than just to sustain itself. The game is probably already in that EQ territory to be honest.

People kept dropping while blizz ignored the problems and doubled down on them by making it more jewish, being more lazy and adding in more rng.
current playerbase is dropping exponentially while there's no new players what so ever.
There won't ever be new modes or improvements because the game is already so badly coded that it can barely function with what it has.

It has absolutely no future and the playerbase keeps shrinking with no hopes of recovering unless they massively overhaul the entire game, which includes redoing it on a new engine.
And that's too much time/effort/money on a game that's already going down the shitter.

In classic blizz fashion, by the time they realize how big the mistakes are it's far too late, and the people that were saying how it was all gonna get better and to stop complaining are the ones that leave and bitch at blizz for not fixing things.
Problems that have been in the making for years, this is not new, they were just not properly addressed and it's now too late
