5 was actually a very solid game mechanically and felt great to play. People bitch about story but no one who actually appreciate these games cares about the dumb fucking plot-hole field that is RE canon.
Same thing happened with DMC franchise. 1 was great so 2 sold a lot and was terrible, but then 3 was a literal masterpiece and sold worse than 1 and 2 because 2 put people off so much.
Shame that 6 was so terrible and dumbed down. Counters broke that game.

Doesn't change the fact that mechanically 5 improved on everything from 4. Attacks felt snappier, there were multiple attacks based on shot AND direction. You can actually step on zombies and guarantee headbreaks depending on the direction you hit from as well! It has enough jank to avoid being regular AAA trash too.
Bitch all you want about meme issues but 5 was a great experience and if you liked the engine then Co-op Mercs was a timesink into which you could put hundreds of hours.
