Saw Ace Combat 7 on the steam sale. I’m floating the option, but IDK. How’s the series? Should I start at 1 or is it not important? Is there a singular best/worst game in the series?

Series is mostly great. No need to start at 1, the "story" doesn't even start until 3. The best are usually regarded as 4/5/0, sometimes 6. 7 is a worthy successor even if some aspects are rushed, it has possibly the best gameplay so far.

The AC series is pretty much an anime-themed third person / first person shooter with a plane skin.
If you didn't get into it back during the Playstation era, you aren't going to like it now.

7 was great. Only get it if you have a controller as I imagine playing with the keyboard is a nightmare.
Give it the 2 hour steam try. If you don't like the first couple missions you aren't going to like the game. But if you do like it then buckle up because there's 5 more games to play.

You can play 4/5/0 on a PS2 or emulate them, 5 and 0 emulate perfectly on PCSX2. 4 is kinda iffy, only works in software mode.
6 is 360 exclusive, so that might be hard to get your hands on. It's good though.
7 mostly follows the story of 5 and 0 but has some references to 4. So if you want to be up to date, those are the ones you "need" to play. If you want to emulate, check /aceg/ on /vg/ for instructions.

I'll rather not. Ace Combat is the kind of game people see with mockery and scorn and the last thing we need is another shitposter raiding AC7's metacritic.

It's a franchise about being a singular ace pilot who shoots down hundreds if not thousands of enemy jets and destroys entire fleets and ground invasions with the hundreds of missiles they have on their aircraft. The melodramatic, Japanese story is told via in-mission radio with cheesy voice acting and cutscenes strengthened by fantastic music. If that kind of arcade gameplay and storytelling appeals to you, it can be fantastic. It's not for everyone though.
Those Metacritic scores look fairly accurate to me. The OP doesn't sound like a simfag complaining about control options either.

Play 4/5/0 in that order. Then play 7 if you liked the series. Then play translated JP 3 if you still crave more. If 7 is your only option now it's fine.
The series is excellent, a bit too easy is the only flaw. 4 and 3 are my favorites.
