>when you can't design any boss type enemy that isn't just a damage sponge shooting rockets or hitscan boolets.

I guess it was a bit of an odd move to make the final challenge in the game a puzzle instead of a boss, after 31 maps of simple mayhem prior, but it was also pretty ballsy.

And that was the best they could come up with? Should have been a series of gauntlet tunnels with many cyberdemons under crushers or something.

Still better than the Quake 1 bosses though, they're awful. ID never made a good boss fight until cyberdemon 2016, or perhaps Xaero if you want to count him.

Name 1 (ONE) good FPS boss fight from the 90's

>Xaero
A suicide jumper with an aimbot is hardly memorable. As for Quake 1, the shareware boss was genuinely impressive and 'holy shit'esque in 1996, even if he's a bore on replays.

the ones in dark forces 2 are decent

question: does Doom 64 come before or after Doom 3 storywise?

Doom 1, 2 and 64 are one timeline
Doom 3 and dlcs are other

What's the lore behind the icon of sin?

John Romero is about to make you his bitch

Doom 2016 lore suggests that it its the reborn and demonized son of the traitor night watch, as for the doom 2 one who knows

recently tried brutal doom, seems cool but bit overwhelming with all the different settings. anything crucial to know? which difficulty is best?

D3D Cycloid Emperor

>Doom 1, 2, then 64, with Doom guy.
>Doom 3 is a new timeline, 'Doom marine' is a literal who with a stamina bar that canonically dies.
>Classic doom guy (now slayer) is YEETed from the end of 64 to a few decades after Doom 3's UAC in Doom 2016, making both timelines canon
>Final Doom isn't canon

It's supposed to be played without manual vertical aiming, with auto-aim on.
It's essentially a troll level. You'll see why when you play it like that (pistolstart is quite desirable as well).

D'Sparil from Heretic on the two last difficulties is AWESOME.
Speaking of Doom, Spider Mastermind bossfight makes a whole lot of sense WHEN PLAYED FROM PISTOLSTART.

I played it without vertical aiming but the missiles don't lock on the boss' forehead like they do with any other enemy in the game so you have to time your shots perfectly while going up the elevator with an army of demons shooting at your back and knocking you off the platform

Once you've done it a few times it's pretty easy to time it right every time and get it done fast enough that the demons never become an issue. In Chocolate Doom.

But yeah, that 'boss' was a dead end for me in the mid 90s when I had no idea what to do and just fought the demons endlessly.

That's why I said it's a troll level. Tge opening is deliberately placed slllllightly below the elevator's top position. Moreover, you can easily fuck this level up by allowing monsters to breed. The key to beating it is actually saying "fuck it" in regard to 100%ing the items (there is no statistics for it anyway), and just going straight for doing what you strictly need in order to complete the level, while ignoring anything at all else.

D'Sparil from Heretic
my fucking nigger

Project Brutality is better.

>Strafe in a circle firing rockets
>Good

the concept was cool but the execution sucked, having to do vertical shit when doom had almost no verticality beforehand sucked

what the HECK were they thinking?

There is another ending level to the game, likely made by Petersen. Google Quake beta3 end map or something like that.
It's unbeatable tho.

I fucking loved DOOM 2016 but hated the boss battles because they were closed off, og doom had you fighting cyberdemons and spider masterminds in open levels, not fucking jumping over shockwaves and gay shit.

At least there was only like 4 boss battles.

Agreed. The constant spawning was a fucking troll. UAC Ultra had a much better boss.

There is no forehead. It's a wall texture, not a monster, there's nothing to lock onto. When I first played the level, I was stumped because there is simply no boss. Shooting at a hole in a wall never occured to me. Being told to 'shoot rockets into the giant demon's brain' didn't help because I never saw a lame wall as being supposed to be a demon and not just spooky Hell decorations.
