Computer role-playing games didn't really have anything in the way of player narrative choice in the early days because it was simply beyond what the technology was capable of.

The earliest JRPGs were on primitive home PCs and the NES. You couldn't have a branching narrative or robust dialogue on those machines without making the game into a VN or text adventure.

JRPGs as a genre arose from imitating those games, not the CRPGs that they were imitating or the tabletop games that CRPGs were imitating. This is the entire reason why JRPGs are generally classified as their own genre instead of just calling them CRPGs.

Most WRPGs are story driven these days too, and ARPGs from Japan tend to have really well designed combat while WRPGs still mostly fall back on gear checks

choosing exactly what your character says is metagaming. the defining quality of a rpg is that the character's abilities are seperate from the player's. you don't get to choose whether your character will hit or miss with his weapon. a real rpg dialogue system would let you pick a general direction of conversation and have what you actually say be determined by your stats. making a character with 1 charisma but using your real life social skills (kek) to avoid pissing off everyone you speak to is basically cheating.

only a fraction of dialogue options are tied to speech checks. if speech were to work like any other skill a character with 0 speech points would be fully autistic and unable to successfully communicate at all.

Anymore. Early Fallout and TES dialogues were varied. Same for Dragon Age Origins. You could even tell a fag that he is a degenerate.
