Most of the 2000s kiddies moved on when 2006 killed the series. That however is another factor. It's also worth noting most of the fangames of Sonic today seem to portray a tone of Sonic that exclusively ignores that era of Sonic. Funnily enough, the mods of the official games seems to get more of the SA2-Shadow tones thrown in to stuff like Forces with some returning levels from that era.

Yes, they're called "bluetooth dongle".
You can connect Wiimotes to your PC using Bluetooth, Dolphin knows how to handle them. There's also sensor bars that connect over USB, but you can just use two candles.
