No, DeS is not part of the dark souls canon. Dark souls is just the much more successful spiritual successor to DeS. They are both completely separate entities.
Now whether or not DeS counts as a souls game differs from person to person. I myself consider it one, but I also consider bloodborne one so my definition for a souls game is kinda loose.
