That on top of the surprisingly great voice acting and comfy story, unique party characters unlike any RPG i'd seen (a green goblin, fat bandit, a dragon, a womanizing gambling templar, a rich slut, and a fucking horse), and just gorgeous visuals.
Easily the best JRPG of all time.

XI is good but its nowhere near as good as VIII. The game isn't open world like VIII, the music is a big step down, the characters are generic fantasy tropes, the gameplay is padded by hundreds of worthless fetch quests instead of fun shit like monster arena, ect.

I'd say V is up there, but my personal favorite is VII, I just love how the game takes it slow with introducing all the different islands and their own issues, it goes long way in making their world actually feel real.

Unironically just play 4 on your phone. The party chat is super important if you care about your party members having an actual personality.

The phone port is literally the same in every way except it has party chat. Or just find an emulator that has the party chat in it.

IV is a very fun play thru, but if it was the party chat in V that pulled you in then the DS version may not be for you.

VII is pretty solid, just slow paced to start and fucking massive in length.

Builders 2 is going to be basically the same gameplay loop, but supercharged with tons of qol changes and multiplayer, so im super excited for it

Technically any of them besides VII are perfectly fine for a beginner. Although if you're really finicky about whatever thematic threads run through the series, its best to think of I-III and IV-VI as trilogies to be played in their respective orders.

At the time the overworld was pretty impressive. Overworlds in PS1 JRPGs were not really any more developed from their 16- bit predecessors. You were still a giant character on a map rather than a person in a world. DQ8 was one of the first games to capture what it felt like as a kid to be exploring a JRPG overworld. That being said in retrospect all they did was make a bigger map and the world and exploration wasn't any deeper than it had ever been and the progression of exploration played out the same as it ever did. Still a solid traditional JRPG.

The flee command isn't a guaranteed safety net, if monsters are stronger than you, your chances of fleeing are extremely slim, if they're about as touch as you, your chances are basically a coin toss, and so on.
Even if you try to run from fights, random encounters will still drain your resources since you'll be taking hits on failed flee attempts.

So I'm playing XI and it is amazing but I have one complaint. What the fuck is this music? I have been hearing the same 5 songs over and over and over again no matter where I am or what is happening. Who thought that was okay? The game is seriously brought down when every single fucking town has the same music and the overworld always has the same music or when there is a dramatic cutscene but they are still playing generic song #4. Not to mention it is all midi.

Other than that the game is amazing but seriously what were they thinking. I know they are relasing an updated version of the game with actual music but I am not very happy that I will need to buy this game twice to play it in a way it should have been in the first place.

What do NES games have to do with the amount of music a game released im 2017 has? A big aspect of JRPG is normally the music, especially recently there have been stellar music in JRPGs then I get to DQXI and it is just a huge disappointment (music wise).

The first game was charming, it was basically a DQ game but with Minecraft building elements slotted into it. Lots of exploration, base building, and doing quests for characters.

They're actually adding a ton to it. Adding music, extra backstory content for every party member, you'll be able to switch between 3D and classic dragon quest 2D on the fly, more ridable monsters, extra romance options, etc.

they are all individually contained unless it is a numbered spin off. you can pick any of them and the most you would miss out on is small references from old games.

No don't fall for it, it's seriously the most bland, repetitive and archaic design ever. It's literally made to emulate shit JRPGs from the 80s they have purposefully not updated anything about the gameplay since then and the result is that every minute you play you feel like you're banging your head off a brick wall. The saving grace is usually the cast of characters but nope, in DQ11 everyone in your party is extremely boring and generic or just really annoying. Avoid.
