USA has some natural immigrant attraction buffs and starts with a pretty big population so you'll never be as big as them, but if Chinese emigration kicks off I've gotten the USCA up to like half the USA's population

Get territories in Africa and Asia to get hordes of cheap labor, then build factories in your homeland that use the rgos they have. If that's not enough, find a big country willing to be your fren and use them to help you get more land. You can mitigate the rebel problems somewhat by promoting soldiers in every state and paying them well. Cash crops in China should ensure you have enough money to maintain a large army.

You need to get average militancy up. Most countries start the game with mostly conservative legislatures and conservatives will only pass reforms if there's high militancy. Every point of average militancy will cause another 10% of conservatives to back social and political reform, so if your legislature is 100% conservative, an average militancy of 5 will let you pass whatever you want. Liberals will always back political reforms so they'll speed up your political reforms, but will back social reforms at the same rate as conservatives.
So when you get events, try to take the options that cause militancy. Taking foreign territory can help, but might cause problems if it doesn't raise your average militancy enough, as the high local militancy will cause tons of revolts.
Also take a look at the "movements screen", which shows what reforms your people want the most. DON'T take these reforms - as the movements build they cause militancy, which you can use to pass lots of other reforms before eventually giving the movement what they want when you want to calm things down

Tip: Play as Germany in the 1936 start of DH. This will give you not only a lot to work with as a major nation, but also give you a great challenge. France is not a pushover, you actually have to use blitzkrieg tactics which are hard to legitimately pull off.
HoI3 is harder to learn due to it being more complex. But if you can learn DH by yourself, you can learn HoI3 with some more effort. Start with DH though. If you continue the main game and enjoy it, try Kaiserreich.

The Japanese attack on the US was because they'd been embargoed and had lost their main source of oil (the US), and to get new resources required them to attack the European holdings in Southeast Asia which would've provoked the US into war. So they essentially came to the conclusion they would try to attack first. without the embargo and with American isolationism the Japs wouldn't be retarded enough to attack them then, they would've just attacked the euro colonies and focused on trying to conquer China.
though let me just note the other guy implying France and the UK wouldn't have to give up their colonies is full retard, firstly because they'd probably lose the war and secondly because at a minimum they'd lost their Asian holdings to the Japs.

What won the Allies the Uboat war was the massive industrial capacity necessary for pumping out merchant ships and destroyers faster than the Germans could sink them and air power, much of which was provided by the US. There's a reason why the Brits were getting worried as fuck about the Atlantic situation before the US entered the war. That being said, the war in this hypothetical scenario would still end with British territorial integrity intact no matter whether the Soviets or Germans won the East, since Hitler wasn't interested in annexing the British Isles or any such nonsense like that.

The Japanese did not attack Burma until after they attacked the US so you're basing this on a historical case where they were already at war. As for China it was getting supplied by the Americans much like the Soviets and UK so again we're supposing american involvement.
