It's kind of a different beast. Faster paced and much smoother, with a lot of little things to cut down on micromanagement, like farms and fish being infinite, houses being less all-consuming, and villagers being smarter about how they gather.
But with god powers and myth units, it's kinda hard to compare them directly.

There's probably a GOG version of the game that you can buy (or pirate).

The different Pantheons actually feel unique and have different playstyles, so I'd say it's better.

What's with anons on Yea Forums and their obsession of shitting on everything that was popular at any point in time? Just because it's not one of the most complex or balanced RTS game out there doesn't mean that the game is bad. Not only that, but AOM is max comfy and has aged relatively well despite the 3d graphics.

AoM is an excellent game and RTS, but its not the best one, Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires 2 are better but that doesnt mean AoM is bad, its still one of my favourite RTS of all time, but not my most favourite one

too bad the only relatively interesting RTS games that are gonna come out are WC3Reforged and Age of Empires remastered,
