Ton's been based since season 1, his whole thing is that people do what they can to survive, but just because you have that tough shell for the world doesn't mean there can't be some good left in you. That's why they keep comparing him and Retsuko.

Besides, Haida already shot his shot for Retsuko. If she really did fall for him at the end it would be terribly unsatisfying.

Ton did nothing wrong. He is tough at work, but such is work, needs productivity. Whenever people need him, he is there for them.

Ton is 100% right in every single thing except being a cunt to women 4noraison. He is made the antagonist by shoving that into him as a old schooler but he outperforms everyone, knows shit shit, admits he is a bastard but is hard on people to toughen em the fuck up. Ton is the guy you might not like but the guy you need. The boss who wants you to take over but wont make it easy. The based motherfucker that tells you how it is, and as the season went on, I started to dislike Retsuko more and more and digging Ton the best, despite being an "antagonist".

It makes sense to have a anime about the issues of life and not having the best MC so they develop but the more I watch, the more I care about Haida, Fenekko and Ton and less about Retsuko herself.

I respect the fact that Retsuko always follows Ton's advice though, he'll fix her up eventually

If Retsuko goes the Legally Blonde route and ends up abandoning her quest for a husband in favor of well earned self respect and success, then timeskipping and her turning out to be a combination of the good parts of Ton, Washimi, and Gori is probably the best possible conclusion they could give the show.

Ton is only an antagonist because the story is told from Retsuko's perspective, we see her telling Ton she thinks he's a shitty boss, but not without him actually calling her out in that she's also a shitty employee.

Are the characters that popular on their own? I could see it taking a rotation of sorts as new people get introduced, like with Anai

Netflix is very keen on cancelling shows once they get to certain arbitrary thresholds of viewership and episode/season numbers nowadays, so they probably won't actually be able to milk it. At best we'll just get a string of other sanrio properties getting their own shows thanks to the success of aggretsuko.

They really aren't. I keep up with the sanrio character ranking polls and Retsuko herself didn't even crack top 40 this year. Last year she barely broke top 20 despite hitting first place in several countries, and those were both results after the series, so she was even less popular before it. And the characters who beat her weren't exclusively huge names like Kuromi and Gudetama either, this is the weight class of literal who's she's competing with. Japan just really does not resonate much with Retsuko, somehow less than Americans do.
