I can only really speak for Fable 1
you can use mostly magic but it would be hard not to at least supplement with melee
lightning is probably the best main attack thanks to its ability to hit multiple enemies and stagger
try hiring guys to follow you and use them as meat shields
and if you do need to engage in melee, you can add mana stones to weapons so each strike recharges your mana bar
you dont need any mods or patches, vanilla tlc is the way to go
2 and 3 are better games.

There was a small mod community back in the day but most websites are dead now. It was a pain to mod the game anyways. Just play TLC. I would avoid anniversary unless you're having severe compatibility issues with TLC but the game is still compatible on my machine at least, the graphical upgrade is a mixed bag, worst part is story NPCs faces were butchered

Its also better to use the mana shield and farm wherever skeletons spawn, they will spawn forever as long as you dont kill the big ones and spawn fast enough your multiplier doesnt ever go down. So you hit something like 300x multiplier, use all your skill potions and food and dont ever need to farm xp again

it has health, like what, every augment baked into it minus the pointless elemental ones, even though the screen only lists 4 you can watch the sword pulse with like five different effects (piercing, sharpening, mana regen, health regen and experience boost)
conversely the frying pan you dig up after you find all six clues can hold something like six augments so you can overcharge it with shit like lightning / flame augmentation and do surprisingly high elemental damage on certain enemies, but if you dig it up early the weapon does 0 damage, bounces off people when you hit them, and has no augment slots

yeah, just take three mercenaries to the Chapel of Skorm at 12:00 AM, one each day... you can use a moonfish to speed up the process

If you REALLY want you can hire a bodyguard and go with him and attack the guy, your attacks won't kill him since he is in the main city of the game, but the attacks from your bodyguard will.
Do you also remember killing that endless wave of undead after the prison quest so you didn't have to back out when grinding the last of your XP?
One of my saves said I killed over 14,000 of them before I cashed in my XP to become fully upgraded.
That's a heavy sword, it makes your rolling and running worse and is less DPS because of lower attack speed. Its just less hassle to use the lighter swords so you dont have to cast berserk all the time
Fable is the only game I've ever played that perfectly captured that sense of being in a fairy tale. No other game has even come close.

Second is only worth playing if you want an example of how to make a player care about moral choices(when you're getting choked for exp) and the little bit they did with the joys stick switching between assassin's rush and stop time being neat but was only utilized to differentiate between AoE and single target spells.
I think with the exception of magic they went all in on reducing choice where possible

my only issue is that I have to wait until Oakvale to do this because Bowerstone won't let you take weapons or magic inside.
I see a lot of praise for 2, but the dog was fucking annoying and you literally couldn't die.
you can literally just tell people to follow you and then leave them outisde the city and the game kills them for you though
but you can;t beat telling all the bandits in twinblades camp to follow you and then let them kill oakvale again while you reap the profits
also you can use fireball level 2 onwards to kill villagers with splash damage and its completely unrecognised as you killing them
finally one of my favourite things to do in oakvale is make everyone in the town follow me, and then wait until night when that fucking fist fighter group comes into town
then go and punch them until they turn hostile (you don't get a fine) and your followers will also join the fray
run back to the pub and play coin golf to protect yourself from being attacked, while able to use the game to look 360
huge fucking bar brawl with everyone in the town involved kicking the shit out of each other (until only the immortal fist fighter guild leader is left alive anyway)

but the gameplay is very repetitive and it gets very boring quick, it plays a bit like your average low quality free to play RPG game with microtransactions

but it's much much slower... in the same time the Solus does two hits, Avo's Tear or Sword of Aeons hit at least three times. The avg dps is considerably higher on those for that reason.

This series feels like one step forward two steps back each game. Hopefully they figure out what's worth keeping from the 2nd and 3rd and incorporate that into something closer to the first.
all the games had great parts, but were held back in other areas
fable iv needs to combine them into a perfect package
progression and theme of fable 1 (hub based areas with lots of detail rather than big empty nothingness, although fable 2 did it kind of well since it was on a smallish scale)
with the city and town style of fable 2, management and items having quality levels, economy, rent all of that shit, jobs and stuff to make you feel part of the world and going from zero to hero
spell weaving of fable 3, and some of the progression / completionist shit like watching a pile of gold grow based on wealth, and having stuff like dyes and the like streamlined.
i dunno about you but it feels like the hero in fable 1 was the only powerful one of the bunch, the others felt watered down in comparison, especially the hero in 3, you had to wear magic gauntlets and use a guild seal to tap into the hero energy, but it really felt like you weren't a hero - not full blooded anyway - like the other two games
imagine being able to weave spells from fable 1, throwing a lightning cloud that slowed time in the aoe and fried people, or combining multi-arrow with a fireball so you throw like a meteor hail rather than an explosion

it was robust enough that weapons scaled down to the hero as well as the armours without glitching and being warped

Tip: You can find some bodyparts png in the game files. Those are custom tattoos, you can draw on them with Paint and walk around with a Batman emblem on your chest.
