Bit Crusade 3 is the sequel to the two full games (1-1 to 8-4) I created within Mario Maker 1, reminiscent of traditional Mario levels, and (eventually) utilizing all 5 game styles. Meant to be played in sequence as an adventure game, starting at the 1-1. There's secrets to find, alternative pathways and other goodies as well. Try to find all 5 Power Pepperonis hidden in each stage to access the super secret bonus room at the end of each level.

Been playing a buncha these, a lotta them are pretty fun but some of them suffer the fatal flaw of having no checkpoints. For shorter levels thats fine but for the long ones and especially auto-scrollers you gotta have checkpoints in there. No matter how good a stage is, if you have to start all over from a single mistake or right at the finish line after a huge endurance it's very unlikely anyone's gonna wanna try again. That said I loved Growing Garden, the idea of using pipes to shrink and kill bugs in your garden is a novel idea I think.

There are two well hidden secrets inspired by the secrets you might find in old NES games. You will know you found it if you find something that will make the already somewhat simple level a bit easier. I don't think anyone will find them but I like to think someday some exploratory player might be rewarded.

SMB is great because it limits Mario's moveset, also has nice aesthetics
NSMB has wall jumping and the aerial spin which is nice but it looks soulless

Here's a small building tip.

A lot of levels that open up and immediately have you go down a pipe often have really simple intros. Its generally just you and the pipe, and that's fine, BUT there's something really simple you can do to give your level that little bit of creative feel it needs.

You don't need to create prop art or anything. Instead, something simple like this single-screen horseshoe design is easy to make and looks so much nicer than a simple hop into a pipe. There's other things you can do here like provide power-ups or even display the mechanics that the level will be focused on. For instance, you could replace the bridge with a Swinging Claw to ensure the player knows how to operate one before beginning the actual level.

30 coins seems about right - the hardest sections are (obviously, and frankly) the Chomp section and the Muncher section, which is just enough reset points that its a challenge but not so much that collecting the coins all over again starts to get grating.

That's the case in most of my levels, I just use them to point out jumps or fill out a few empty spaces. I wish the game tracked how many coins/lives you've collected throughout playing, just anything to make me give a shit about putting them in the level.

There are no O's just zeros in stage codes. And I think it's a cool concept and strong first draft but you need to make it more obvious what is going on/where the coins are... either have the spawn pipe higher or the coins closer to walking level so it's in standard camera range for combatants.

Also I suggest using some semi-solid platforms to add sense of depth to course and removing the clutter INSIDE the platform (the mushrooms and koopas add nothing. And beginning Lava rising is just bullshit and doesn't add anything.

The level is fine as-is. If you add a checkpoint two (negative!?) things will happen
1: the level becomes way easier as players now only need to clear the chomps once.
2: the player will feel MORE frustrated on their first playthrough if they need to go back to the start because they missed a coin - as they'll need to get that coin every time now and go back to get it. Objectively, of course, this makes no sense, but it's a psychological thing.

Very fun level, actually my first "thwomp platforming level" but I got through alright despite the learning curve. The key door for that last sideways jump was a great idea, and as was the fun satisfying ending with a helmet.

One nitpick: I felt your use of coins was most often as a "out of your way" award rather than a guide. I think it could have benefited from using coins to guide players jump to adjust the camera to better see coming Thwomps (I'm thinking of climbing the bottom right area after you go through the first pipe), or just to reassure them they are going the right direction.

I made an intermediate course for beginners. It's supposed to help practice the smw spin jump. For some reason the level always bugs out and there are fewer enemies than what I placed. But restarting from the checkpoint fixes this.

Just a simple desert theme linear level utilizing twisters and some flying blocks.

I enjoy the concept of this level, I think it's funny. Like the whole koopa armed robbery and collecting coins is cool. I like the execution too, just an all around good level!

Go into the pipe, then put in the Konami code (up up down down left right left right b a) when the p-switch is running, wait until the end. By putting in the specific input, you manipulate the RNG, so the coins perfectly fall so you don't fall into the pit.

Ceave gaming talked a little about the RNG, which inspired me to take a closer look. He talked about right when you start the game/exit a pipe, the randomness will always be the same. Otherwise it's based on user input. So I tested the user input. Some buttons are the same (technically you could push b or a twice rather than "b a". I think "up" might be unnecessary too). Pushing left while your being pushed along registers as a single button press in the PRNG, but pushing right makes mario take a step, collide with the rock, and reset. Thus it matter how many frames the right button was pressed. I managed to fix this by trapping the user in the 1x1 block, so the press of the right button only registered once. Then I set up the randomizing killer with a 2^12 (1/4096) chance. However I then put in the konami code in my waiting area, and since that always has the same "random" result, I made the randomizer take that pattern to let you through.

Fun, user. Probably tougher in multiplayer because it's very easy to avoid obstacles in the beginning. You should consider changing the "Standard" tag to Multiplayer for a bit so that it's more likely to appear there. I made a standard level with a practical application for multiplayer and it has been played in that mode over 80 times.

I have noticed that you have to restart the game to update the numbers but your notifications will show up in real time.

You have to throw the pow and hop on top of it. It follows a really shallow arc, and it's speed is determined by how fast you were when you threw it. The first pow throw you can stand still, toss it, then hop on.

Is this game worth full price? Do I get the NES Online combo?

How on Earth did they fuck up 3d world so badly? It actually feels like you're playing 3d world with a camera set to make it look 2d, but without any of the adjustments needed for the game to work in 2d

The first jump in the level is supposed to teach you how the pow travels slowly in an arc when thrown, as if it's underwater (because thats how the night airship works). You just throw it, and it will slowly travel through the air. Hop on, and it carries you across.

So I don't know if this is the place to post this. But I got WR on a fairly easy course, but one that over 10,000 people have played. Recently someone took my record and I took it back. They took it again by two tenths of a second. I came home from work and I destroyed his record by 8 tenths. A sandbox level with an emphasis on exploration. I'd like some critique on this course, because at first no-one could complete it. Collecting 500 coins was apparently too much, so I re-uploaded with the clear condition being 390 coins instead.

I completed it. It's a good challenge, not too frustrating, but it feels rough around the edges. It seems like you just hastily slapped pieces into place without thinking about how it affects the look and feel of the level. For example, at the beep block section, I had a bit of trouble seeing where to go next until I just barely caught sight of the hammer bro to the right.

Tried to make this more straightforward than my last level. Was going to make the sub-area mandatory but I figured that would just drag the level out too long. Kind of regret that decision. Overall, I'd say it feels pretty unfinished.

The red coins are optional, my friend. Collecting all 5 lets you get a key to access the on/off switch which changes the level layout slightly and leads to the unfinished sub-area that should've been more difficult than the main route.

Spent a good few days just working on these levels.
My first one's in Mario U and should be a bit challenging but definitely doable and it focuses on the propeller shroom. Play this one if you want to have fun.

I put a ridiculous amount of work into it to make it feel like a metroidvania sorta thing with interconnected pathways and a location that feels massive. Very low plays right now, but the clear rate already has me concerned that it's a bit too easy to get lost.

I don't know man it just seems like some kids will have trouble on that first jump and there isn't a whole lot of ground in the later parts.

Yeah, it lacks a clear direction. Hard to tell exactly where you can find anything. Besides that, the rooms and the design is very good. It could use a little more direction though.

I like it general, but it is a bit maze-like, rooms blend together for me. Some super cool ideas though, but I think the lack of visual identity and using so many of the weird situational items instead of the Raccoon suit or something makes it a bit hard to get into for most people. Also, I dont know if this concerns you or not but in the room where the beetle helmet spawns I softlocked myself and couldnt beat the level. I still had the spike helmet and killed the muncher so I was locked in. If you think its my fault, thats fair, but for Metroidvania type levels I think there should always be a way to leave back out a room, even if you cant move forward yet.

only got the game two days ago and have only been playing Yea Forums's levels posted in these threads. some are really great. then today i started playing endless on normal and like every level is just complete shit. auto scrolling sky levels with 18 enemies on screen as soon as the level loads.
i didnt have a wii-eww. was it always like this? are the expert levels better? i have a feeling theyll be full of spin jump over 20 thwomps and just frame bullshit shell jumps etc, and i dont want that.
really loving the game so far, though. some levelslisted under the most popular tab are really creative and fun, and playing with Yea Forums is cool, but holy suck... that endless mode drinks my bum hole.

The seesaw falling is part of the level, there's an open track at the start.
The goombrat, though, normally just lands on the left side and starts walking right. No idea how it bounced off this time (you can see it about to land just before it does).

Really want to work it in, just to give there an actual reason for it to be a seesaw instead of a normal platform.

The highest quality levels are in normal and easy. Expert and super expert have their moments, but its filled with "my first level" enemy spam and find the dev block trash. I honestly recommend skipping trash levels, it might feel cheap, but otherwise you're going to mill lives to some 5 year old's deathtrap.

Seesaw probably just didn't make contact when you started seesawing left. Collision detection is probably less accurate traveling at mach 3 downward on a rotating seesaw

also, in some thread yesterday i saw a list of the achievos/unlocks and it said you get something for clearing 50 levels in endless. i just beat 51 stages and a notification popped up saying "you unlocked the [clear 10 stages challenge]" and i got a hat or something. why didnt i get the unlocks for 50? or 20? 30? do they not exist? what gives?

Each difficulty has a 10 and a 100 unlock (though nobody's seen/confirmed Super Expert 100 yet).

everything i post here basically goes unnoticed but today I got about 10 likes and a bunch of plays on two of my courses with 0 plays.

It was fun. Played it a few times to clean up the clear rate a bit.

My one complaint is that dark water goomba area is annoying, I'd swap them out for something stationary. Lowering the coin count was a good idea.

My goal was to create a level entirely comprised of puzzles. It's incredibly long so if you hate spending 5 - 7 minutes in a level you might dislike it.

The entry in the sub area will start off with minor platforming challenges, but you'll eventually land on a hub with 2 doors that'll split you off into multiple mini-puzzles which is where the "meat" of the course is at.

I made it with multiplayer in mind, which is partly why I had it split off to prevent multiple people trying to complete one puzzle at a time and encourage separate team co-operation.

Criticisms are very much appreciated.

On the left if it didn't explode all 4 blocks you can usually jump around it or just retry it.

On the right I didn't think there was any need to reset; everything you need to complete it respawns infinitely. It is convoluted though.

I really like that shell jump level, but I don't understand what that rail and dotted block is supposed to signal. If you try to release the shell when you overlap the dotted block you won't make it, and if it's supposed to be the point of release, why wouldn't you use just a single block or track instead?
I'm assuming the way the open track is facing is also some kind of hint, but I couldn't make sense of it.

The secret path near the beginning is my favourite part, a static puzzle-solving section. But if you hate puzzles, you can play the normal route. I spent at least 3 hours tweaking the puzzle section in the secret route above the starting area, so I'd love to hear if someone figures it out

I've gotten acclimated to using the controller to create since I've had to charge my switch more from this game than any other game I own for my switch. It's not as good as a stylus imo but its better than nothing and its not THAT bad I don't think, just gotta learn.

You should make levels because you wanna make them, not for the attention they'll get. Going in with that mentality dooms you from the start. Your first levels might not be the best but you just gotta practice, take cues from games you've played that you like and base your levels on that.

Come up with a location in your mind, think about how the terrain there would be formed, and what kind of things would live in it. Is it an ancient place or somewhere modern like a factory? Underwater or in the sky? Add small details like mini structures or failing that, interesting patterns with blocks so its more visually appealing, but not so much so it interferes with the core level design.

I've barely touched Vs from all the horror stories I've heard, mostly the bad lag and stuff but I guess theres no real filiter for what levels you get is there?

I never played MM1, but I'm making levels is a breeze with the pro controller. I don't see how a stylus helps when you're working with big-ass tiles, it's not as if we're working with curves and such.

There's a story mode made by the developers if that's what your talking about. However there is no story...just modular levels made by the staff at Nintendo.

You can make sequences of levels, but its up to the player to go to your profile and actually select them in the order you intend them to be played in, which you can label but there's no world map feature or anything like that sadly. No playlists either outside of followed creators but those can't be organized. It's what I'm doing with my 32 slots unless they give us more.
