At some point homosexuality stopped being classified as a mental illness. This was, I think, fair enough. While abnormal(and often comorbid with mental illness), it's possible to be homosexuality without hurting yourself or hindering your ability to function in society.
However, transsexuals proceeded to co-opt the movement for tolerance of homosexuals to try and get themselves reclassified as sane. The problem with this is that transsexuals DO hurt themselves and it DOES hinder their ability to function in society. But the homosexual community did not want to exclude them, so they allowed them to tag along. And, because there was a fair bit of money in it for them to sell hormone therapy and elective surgery, doctors declassified it. And, because everyone on the political left had built their platforms on being inclusive and avoiding discrimination, accepting them entered mainstream political discourse.
So, here we are: a group of mentally ill people are not only not being treated but instead given unnecessary and destructive surgery and radical hormone therapy in order to try and bring their completely functional physical bodies closer to their delusional conception of themselves, generally resulting in permanent damage. Saying "hey, maybe we should try treating addressing the mental illness part" or even suggesting that they are mentally ill is not only wrong but makes you the scum of the earth. That's the world we live in now, man.
