Madotsuki has no backstory. I intended for Yume Nikki to be a dark exploration RPG, where the player is reacting to the imagery they see, but I saw fans were very fixated on the actual character sprite you play as (ha ha!)
I wanted to solve the problem of top-down RPG where the character design was too intrusive to the experience, and was confident modernization would help the game. However I see it was a worse experience and did not solve the problems I wanted. I did not assist them with the design direction, but I am sorry.

I have returned to working on the original game only recently to make things right. The support of fans from the West inspired me to learn English in the first place. I promise not to let you down again.

Well for what it matters i personally enjoyed it because i played it during a rough time in my life where the stress of losing my parents and being abused by the people that took me in had made me unsure of what was a dream and what was not. Yume Nikki would be in my top 10 games if the soundtrack wasn't just 5 sec loops the majority of the time. They are pretty good mood setters but they get tiresome after a while.

No, as i said, walking around like other exploration games, and then if you really want to finish the game (is not big deal) you just kill some enemies to get "exent nomad" or something like that. That feature takes you the final zone (with no turning back)

That's the point of engines like RPGmaker, user. They allow you to set triggers, contexts, and such with simple prompts for what you want to happen when items are used, picked up, and such. There's a small chance that Kikiyama didn't even know how to code.
