why do companies do this? imagine the things that could be done with the Sonic IP. I'm thinking a 3D platformer where you play as Tails, making use of his limited flight, and you can find custom outfits along the way, and ecounter familiar faces and do minigames

To keep money coming. Sonic forces wasn't even that bad. Almost fun.

With Sonic Forces, it's so obvious they were pandering to their vision of the audience, rather than actually conceiving a good, fun idea that they were excited about.

Well if they wouldn't have included that original character shit then it would have been better.

Its been beaten to death already but sonic needs to lose the railroad level design to be fun. Nothing sucks more ass than boosting fast as fuck down a winding corridor that pushes you to the center everytime you nudge the invisible barrier on either side of the track.

That's how I feel about Banjo-Kazooie. It could have been a real competitor for Mario, yet Microsoft did nothing with it. Now it's probably too late to build the series properly. Early and late 00's is when we needed big, colorful, goofy, irreverent platformers the most. Big sprawling 3D platformers would have been stiff competition against the narrow and linear Mario Galaxy. Banjo Racing, a racing adventure game and Diddy Kong Racing successor, might even be good competition with Mario Kart Wii. It would have been something really different on Xbox, having their own Nintendo series. But no, Rare shat out a shitty redesigned spin-off and that's it, series dead.
