What the hell happened between 2010 and 2011?
What the hell happened between 2010 and 2011?
You were born.
Reminder that most user reviews on Metacritic are retroactive, and are therefore colored by nostalgia.
ps3/xbox 360 was the gen where game reviewers started getting paid off to write good reviews. it's much more widespread now.
never trust a paid games reviewer or """""journalist""""".
Every asshole thinks their opinion is worth listening to. They are just in search of attention and hoping to get noticed as an influencer. Wish games had more demos instead of trailers and nonsense reviews. It is a wonder piracy isn't through the roof.
Dragon Age: Inquisition got game of the year in 2014. That's how far journos are disconnected from actual videogame enthousiasts.
The successes of certain franchises and approaches from a few years back around 2007 or so made marketing more agressive and paid reviews more of a consistent trend, along with the death of AA titles that couldn't really afford paid reviews, so there's not much to lower critic scores other than the quality of the titles, which the users have noticed, but the critics, through their disinterest in the medium or just general pleb nature along with being paid, haven't seen a drop in scores.
In 2012 we got Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Mass Effect 3, some of the worst games of that era.
Hi
If I had to guess, I'd say that's the year companies got serious about paying for high metacritic scores.
IGN and Gamespot's reviews were getting fucking huge on Youtube, big publishers started throwing money at them in truckloads.
>average score difference of 3 points
big whoop
pretty sure OP was pointing out the decline generally not the inversion.
the inversion is the result of an influx of uneducated and childish reviews as the internet became more accessible to children and manchildren. why hello, you
anyone who believes that reviews were less tainted by advertising dollars in some nostalgic past is fooling themselves because of their personal neuroses about the media at large
High speed internet took off. Everything started becoming quicker to access and digital. The internet is the source of ALL major problems. It's given rise to platforms certain individuals should never of had.
shilling and astroturfing became easier then ever
stagnation, motion gimmick shovelware, mobileshit
Dragon Age 2 got game of the year and 9/10s across the board in 2011 and it was a much worse game than even Inquisition was
Are we headed for another golden age?
>going up
OH NO THIS WASNT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN SO SOON
BUY BUY BUY
sneed
I remember the quality on AAA games getting steadily worse around that time, where 2013 was my personal all-time low. I don't think I played a single game all year.
That was also the Mass Effect 3 drama, and guess who was around then to call every gamer "entitled".
You’re not wrong about this.
Tinder
Why can I hear this .gif?
Skyrim
Zelda SS
review bombing
all the red user reviews on metacritic are retarded pajeets and chinks sperging
I'll give you a hint: check the amount of traffic the major gaming outlets are receiving.
Did they want trannies in vidya in 2014? They got them. What did it cost them? Their jobs.
>ps3/xbox 360 was the gen where game reviewers started getting paid off
Fucking lmao, game mags before were just fucking ads barely hiding the fact. What you think nintendo power was objective journalism?
you obviously weren't alive when DRIV3R released
>he thinks trans people are the reason major news vidya sites arent able to compete with long form twitch streams that advertise games just as well but with a unique, personable twist and at low overhead cost (perfect for specific demographic targeting)
its time to stop posting gramps. the media environment has changed, but not along the lines of your bizzare conspiracy theory
Modern Warfare 3.
t. tranny
Go dilate.
Nothing really happened per say, it was just the culmination of a series of trends on both sides. On the one hand, in 2006 and onward, E3 became an invite only event. That meant that the companies controlled which magazines/sites got day 1 access to the most important convention in the industry. Around the same time, a journalist was fired for giving a bad review of Kayne and Lynch while the site was absolutely plastered with K&L ads. These two key events basically solidified the idea that games journalists were a thinly veiled PR department for video game companies. Every year since was just more and more people in both parties coming to that realization and either hopping on board, or leaving in disgust. That's why absolute shit like Anthem or ME3/Andromeda can still get 7 or 8/10 scores.
On the user side of things, the saturation of blatant corporate shilling meant that users only had user-only spaces to vent their negative feelings about games. Hence the rise of negativity fueled youtube channels like AVGN and review bombing. You'll notice that corporate culture controlled media has tried to slander and destroy both of these things in recent years. It's not a coincidence. They want to extend their control to even user spaces to prevent negative word of mouth from spreading.
metacritics bias toward diverse inclusivity when has had a huge push inside the industry get games better scores just based on those principals alone
