The worst part about RDR2's story is how hard it tries to convince you that Arthur was actually a good man.

well it doesn't really. The story leaves it up to you to decide whether Arthur was actually a good person or if he just had a change of heart because of his impending death.
I'd say the game tries to make you believe the latter rather than the former actually. Even Arthur says it when he's talking to the nun.

But even if the game tried to do that, why would that be a bad thing?

No, it just paints Arthur as Arthur, a flawed man capable of great kindness and brutality. He may be a hardened outlaw, but he still has moral standards.

They're never the worst guys, though. Niko Bellic isn't a saint, but Rascalov was pure evil. Carl Johnson is a far better man than Tenpenny. Even Trevor is one of the most honourable characters in the series.
